R. Nuzzolo 38'
J. Ojala 53'
G. Zárate 63'
J. Ojala 4' (own goal)
A. Wisdom 40'
S. Coates 67'
J. Shelvey 76', 88'
That was probably tougher than Brendan Rodgers would have hoped, but considering the relatively young and inexperienced squad that travelled to Switzerland, the Liverpool boss can be pleased. Nuri Sahin picked up two assists, debutant Andre Wisdom found the net, and Jonjo Shelvey showed what a great player he could become in time with two well-taken goals off the bench.
90' + 3'
That's it! That's your lot! Liverpool beat Young Boys 5-3 in a game full of goals, but not brimming with quality until the introduction of Fabio Borini and Jonjo Shelvey in the second half.
Before Shelvey's second goal, Young Boys actually had a chance to level as Farnerud headed back across goal, but Frey mistimed his jump and it was easy for Jones to collect in the end.
IT'S 5-3!!! AND IT'S SHELVEY AGAIN!!! Brilliant stuff from the midfielder, who has taken control of this game since coming on. Picking the ball up in the centre circle, the 20-year-old drives forward, adjusts to his left hand side and thumps the ball beyond Wolfi. Liverpool have a two-goal lead and you've got to say that's probably game over.
Yellow CardRaul Bobadilla
Bobadilla should be thoroughly embarrassed - the striker has just been rightly cautioned for 'simulation'. The No.9 took a tumble in the box with nobody anywhere near him.
We've had a couple of bookings as well - Dusan Veskovas is cautioned for a foul on Borini, while the striker has himself been carded for a challenge on Ojala.
Yellow CardFabio Borini
Young Boys are far from finished here. Zverotic - he of the error for Liverpool's fourth - is substituted for Michael Frey and moments later Farnerud sends a curling shot at goal which Jones has to parry clear.
Yellow CardDušan Veškovac
Young Boys are very nearly presented with the chance to equalise yet again, but Farnerud stumbles in the box before he can fashion a header at goal and Liverpool are let off.
GOAL FOR JONJO SHELVEY!!! LIVERPOOL LEAD!!! It's a mistake from Elsad Zverotic, who gifts Fabio Borini possession. The Italian plays across goal for Henderson, who finds Shelvey with a delightful first-time pass, and the second half substitute sweeps in. Remarkably, it's 4-3 to Liverpool!
Suso is the next to have a go - why not? Everyone else is! The midfielder can't trouble Wolfi though, hammering over the bar.
In amongst all that madness, Jonjo Shelvey came on for Assaidi, who looked lively on his debut, while goalscorer Raphael Nuzzolo has been replaced by Christian Schneuwly.
GOAL!!! LIVERPOOL ARE LEVEL! Some debate over this one - Sahin puts in another cross, Sebastian Coates heads back towards goal, Fabio Borini attempts to direct the ball in and it hits the post and crosses the line. It may just have taken a touch off the Italian...either way, it's 3-3!
And that's Zarate's last involvement in this game - he's replaced by Alexander Gonzalez
GOAL!!! YOUNG BOYS ARE AHEAD! What a finish from Zarate! Three defenders get sucked into trying to take the ball from Bobadilla, and the striker plays in Zarate, who delicately lifts the ball beyond Jones. Carragher attempts to clear but can't get there in time - it's 3-2 here!
Borini is on for Liverpool. Dani Pacheco makes way.
Scott Sutter goes for the audacious, attempting to lift a side-footed lob over Jones after the Australian had punched clear, but the ball floats over the bar.
Fabio Borini appears to be ready to come on for Liverpool now.
Bobadilla has been threatening for Young Boys so far in the second half and creates more havoc, but Liverpool eventually deal with the danger and Jones tries to spring a break, but Jose Enrique's eventual shot is comfortably saved and might even have gone wide on its own.
GOAL!!! Ojala makes amends with the equaliser for Young Boys! Bobadilla whips in a cross, the centre-back gets ahead of Wisdom and glances into the bottom corner beyond Jones. It's 2-2 now!
Assaidi is not afraid to have a crack at goal. The winger again cuts inside onto his right foot and lets fly, but the end product is way off target.
First threat of the second half comes from the hosts as Raimondi whips in a dangerous cross but nobody can connect.
We're back underway, with Young Boys kicking off.
There has been some absolutely awful defending in the opening 45 minutes of this one. First, Christoph Spycher headed straight into Ojala to give the visitors the lead, but Jose Enrique's decision to try to intercept an attack unnecessarily allowed Nuzzolo to equalise. Liverpool had the last laugh though, through Andre Wisdom's thunderous header.
45' + 1'
It's half time and Liverpool lead 2-1.
OOH! Young Boys nearly pull level again through Farnerud, whose drilled shot from 20 yards bounces up off the turf and onto the upright. Business has picked up in this one.
GOAL!!! Liverpool are back in front just moments later, and it's Andre Wisdom on his debut! Nuri Sahin floats in a high corner, and the defender leaps highest to power home a header. A forceful finish from the youngster.
Yellow CardRaphael Nuzzolo
GOAL!!! Young Boys are level! What a mess! Bobadilla and Farnerud exchange passes and get beyond Carragher, but as Jones attempts to clear, Jose Enrique gets a foot in and the ball eventually finds its way to Rafael Nuzzolo, who thrashes home. 1-1!
Lovely stuff from Suso. The Spanish youngster is played in by Assaidi and glides past three players with jinks and stepovers, but his low cross is easily cleared.
Well, Young Boys have a free-kick in a dangerous position after Jose Enrique pulled down Zarate. The referee didn't give it, but the fifth official makes his presence known and the decision is reversed. The infringement was very nearly inside the box. Liverpool clear the danger.
Young Boys are still trying to force their way into this game after that early setback, but it's become a bit fragmented with a few niggling fouls breaking up play currently.
Liverpool have another free-kick after Pacheco is clattered by Ojala whilst collecting a Nuri Sahin pass. The visitors can't create an opening though.
At the other end, Zarate, who looks like one of the home side's biggest creative threats, tries his luck with a curling effort, but it's not troubling Brad Jones and floats wide.
Chance for Liverpool, Assaidi finds some space in front of the Young Boys back four and fires at goal, but his shot deflects wide for a corner, which comes to nothing.
There's pressure coming down the Liverpool right hand side from the hosts at the moment through Raimondi and Bobadilla, but Wisdom, with help from Henderson, does well to clear the danger.
Not to be outdone, Jordan Henderson gives away a foul for a tackle on Zarate, but to be fair to the Liverpool man, he did get a decent chunk of the ball in that exchange.
Yellow CardMario Raimondi
The first yellow card of the game is given to Mario Raimondi, who slides in incredibly late on Downing and clatters into the midfielder with the ball long gone. A really poor challenge.
Young Boys appeal for a penalty, but it's turned away. Alexander Farnerud breaks into the box from a Liverpool corner and goes down easily under pressure from Jamie Carragher. Referee Michael Koukoulakis is not interested.
Corner for Liverpool - Oussama Assaidi's ball into the box takes a touch off a defender on its way out, but the delivery comes to nothing.
Young Boys have taken a massive setback early here and are trying to force their way right back into this game, but Gonzalo Zarate's ambitious through ball is too long for everyone.
Ooh! Young Boys take the ball straight down the other end and, in an attempt to respond, Raul Bobadilla flashes a shot against the side netting.
Own GoalJuhani Ojala
GOAL!!! Well, we're only four minutes in but Liverpool have the lead in comical circumstances. Stewart Downing manages to get in a cross, but the attempted clearance hits Juhana Ojala and bobbles in apologetically!
And it's Liverpool to kick us off. We're underway!
The teams are lining up at the Stade de Suisse, and we're just a few minutes away from kick-off!
Young Boys will be most recognisable to fans in the UK as the team who nearly qualified for the Champions League at the expense of Tottenham in 2010. Of the team that recorded a 3-2 victory in Bern over Spurs in the first leg, only Marco Wolfi, Scott Sutter and Christoph Spycher remain in the starting XI.
Before the game Rodgers indicated Wisdom, the young defender, is likely to start at right-back, while Suso, who has been in the Liverpool academy for some time, is expected to play in a midfield three, with Dani Pacheco up front. Assaidi, who arrived from Dutch side Heerenveen in the summer, will operate from a wide position.
A very unfamiliar Liverpool team lines up in Bern for Brendan Rodgers, then. The Anfield boss has selected the likes of Andre Wisdom, Suso, new signing Oussama Asaidi and Dani Pacheco. The likes of Pepe Reina, Steven Gerrard, Luis Suarez and several others have all stayed home.
Liverpool: Jones; Wisdom, Coates, Carragher, Jose Enrique; Henderson, Sahin, Suso; Assaidi, Pacheco, Downing. Subs: Gulacsi, Sterling, Borini, Shelvey, Yesil, Robinson, Wilson. Young Boys: Wolfi; Sutter, Veskovac, Ojala, Raimondi; Zverotic, Spycher; Gonzalo Zarate, Farnerud, Nuzzolo; Bobadilla. Subs: Benito, Gonzalez, Lekjacs, Costanzo, Schneuwly, Frey, Vitkieviez.
Good evening everyone, and welcome to Goal.com's coverage of this Europa League Group A clash between Young Boys and Liverpool. Let's have a look at the teams, shall we?
