The win moves Bayern 11 points clear of nearest challengers Borussia Dortmund, who are in action against struggling Hoffenheim tomorrow, whilst Wolfsburg remain in eighth place ahead of a must-win game against Hannover on Tuesday.
After putting in a great performance in the first half, Wolfsburg just didn't have enough in the tank to find a way past Bayern, who kept hammering away at the hosts before eventually breaking them down midway through the second period. From then onwards, the visitors were in full control, and they were easily able to keep at bay a home side that lost belief after going behind and, as a result, offered little in the final 25 minutes.
FULL-TIME: WOLFSBURG 0-2 BAYERN MUNICH
90' + 2' The hosts try to push forward on one last attack as they desperately search for what would surely only be a consolation goal, but a resolute and well-organised Bayern midfield deny them any way through and the referee ends up blowing his whistle for the final time before Wolfsburg can carve out a chance on goal.
90' + 1' Wolfsburg are finally able to get back on the ball and try to push forward on a late attacking move, but a lofted pass forward from Schurrle is easily cut out by Lahm on the edge of the penalty area before it can find Kruse.
90' The fourth official has indicated that there will be two minutes of added time.
S. Rode
K. Coman
Bayern München
88' Coman receives a standing ovation from the Bayern fans as he's replaced by Rode for the final few minutes of the game.
86' It's all Bayern at the moment as they patiently pass the ball around deep inside the Wolfsburg half of the pitch. Understandably, they don't seem to be in any particular rush to push too far forward, and they are now concentrating on keeping possession away from the hosts.
I. Azzaoui
M. Schäfer
Wolfsburg
84' Wolfsburg have made a late substitution, with Azzaoui coming on to take the place of Schafer.
83' Another good save by Neuer! Kruse breaks into the right-hand side of the Bayern box and immediately fires an excellent shot that looks set for the back of the net, but the German goalkeeper does wonderfully well to push it away from danger with a strong diving stop.
82' A Bayern attacking move breaks down, and Wolfsburg immediately try to break away on a quick counter-attack. The first few passes are good but Kruse and Arnold aren't on the same wavelength and the latter's attempted ball forward fails to find the striker.
80' Lahm almost makes it 3-0! A dangerous cross from Ribery bounces through a sea of white shirts inside the Wolfsburg penalty area before falling to the right-back, but his thumping half-volley ends up deflecting off the face of Rodriguez before it can find the top left-hand corner of the net.
Juan Bernat
Yellow Card
Bayern München
78' Schurrle skips past Bernat on the right wing before being clattered into by the Spaniard, resulting in a yellow card for the Bayern left-back.
R. Knoche
Naldo
Wolfsburg
76' Naldo seems to have picked up a nasty injury after being clattered into by Thiago a few minutes, and he's forced off to be replaced by Knoche for the remaining 14 minutes of the game.
F. Ribéry
Assist
Bayern München
74' Ribery did well to meet Coman's cross before nodding it down into the path of Lewandowski, and the Frenchman has made a great impact since coming on for Robben at the start of the second half.
R. Lewandowski
Goal
Bayern München
74' GOAL! Bayern have doubled their lead! Coman skips past Rodriguez with ease before curling a deep cross over to Ribery, who immediately chests it down into the path of Lewandowski. The Polish striker then fires a beautiful shot with the outside of the foot that takes Casteels by surprise and flies past the Wolfsburg goalkeeper before nestling into the bottom left-hand corner of the net. That is surely that...
A. Schürrle
C. Träsch
Wolfsburg
73' Wolfsburg have made their first substitution of the game, with Trasch, who looks absolutely shattered, making way for Schurrle.
72' And now Alonso is presented with an opportunity! Ribery, who has made a big difference after coming on for Robben, charges down the left wing before cutting the ball back to the aforementioned Spaniard. Unmarked on the edge of the box, he immediately unleashes a low strike, but it's slightly mishit and fails to trouble Casteels.
70' Chance for Vieirinha! Trasch breaks down the right flank before firing a low cross into the heart of the penalty area. It meets the aforementioned Portuguese winger, who is in a good position in front of goal, but he sends his close-range shot straight into the hands of Neuer.
68' What do Wolfsburg do now? Up until now they seemed content to sit deep and defend resolutely before trying to carve out chances on the counter, but a goal down and with little over 20 minutes left to play they will have to start pushing increasingly further forward in search of an equaliser.
K. Coman
Goal
Bayern München
66' GOAL! Bayern have finally broken the deadlock! The hosts swarm forward and break into the Wolfsburg penalty area before the ball falls to Lewandowski. The Polish striker immediately fires a shot that deflects up into the air before dropping down to Coman, who, completely unmarked, side-foots a thumping volley off the right hand of Casteels and into the back of the net. The hosts look absolutely devastated, and it's no wonder why.
65' The resulting corner is flung into the middle of the box, where it finds Dante, but the former Bayern defender ends up sending his looping header comfortably over the top of the crossbar and out for a goal-kick.
64' What a save by Neuer! Wolfsburg break away on a blisteringly quick counter-attack, with Kruse charging down the left wing before curling a cross over towards the far post. It finds Draxler, who immediately unleashes a rocket of a volley that the Bayern goalkeeper is somehow able to push over the crossbar with a brilliant diving stop.
62' Bayern regain possession and break down the right flank through Coman, who is now operating on that wing after the introduction Ribery. The youngster battles hard with Rodriguez before trying to chip a cross over to the far post, but, again, the Swiss defender comes out on top and directs the pass out of play for a goal-kick.
60' Bayern take their foot off the pedal slightly, which allows Wolfsburg to spend some time on the ball inside the visitors' half of the pitch. They initially move it around well as they try to push towards the penalty area, but the league leaders put them under an incredible amount of pressure and force them into sending the ball back towards the halfway line.
58' A lovely lofted pass from Alonso finds Ribery on the left flank, and the Frenchman brings the ball down quickly before skipping past Trasch. He then fires a low cross into the middle of the box that finds Coman, but the youngster is unable to get a shot away before having his pocket picked by Naldo.
F. Ribéry
A. Robben
Bayern München
56' Bayern have made their second change of the game, with Robben making way for Ribery.
55' Lewandowski misses a golden opportunity to score! Bayern move the ball around quickly just outside of the Wolfsburg penalty area before Muller flicks a lovely pass into the feet of the Polish striker. He's completely unmarked inside the box and only has Casteels to beat, but he ends up firing his close-range strike over the top of the crossbar.
53' Lewandowski scores, but it's ruled out! Thiago twists and turns in the middle of the pitch before sending a lovely through-ball into the path of Muller, who quickly breaks into the left-hand side of the Wolfsburg box. He then cuts a pass back to the aforementioned Polish striker, but just as he taps the ball into the back of the net the linesman's flag is raised for offside.
51' A poor pass from Alaba can only find a white shirt, and Wolfsburg quickly take advantage of the mistake by breaking forward. The hosts pass the ball around well before Vieirinha sends a curling cross into the heart of the penalty area, but it's just about dealt with by Kimmich. The makeshift centre-back's clearance can only find Rodriguez, however, but the left-back ends up firing his 30-yard strike comfortably wide of the far post.
Thiago Alcântara
Douglas Costa
Bayern München
50' Guardiola has already decided to make a change, and he has brought on Thiago to replace Costa, who has had a largely quiet afternoon.
48' After an even start to the second period, Robben bursts down the right flank on a great run before trying to chip a cross into the penalty area, but, under pressure from Rodriguez, the Dutchman ends up sending his attempted pass over the top of the crossbar and out of play for a goal-kick.
46' And we're underway once again!
The two teams are making their way back out onto the pitch ahead of the start of the second half. Neither side have made any substitutions during the half-time break.
As expected, Bayern dominated possession throughout the first half, but Wolfsburg look up for the fight and have done wonderfully well to carve out several good chances on goal. Schafer's late opportunity from close range really should have put the hosts 1-0 up, whilst at the other end of the pitch Dante and Naldo have been on top form to keep Lewandowski and Muller largely quiet. The home team will be the happier of the two at the moment, but for how long will they be able to keep this up?
HALF-TIME: WOLFSBURG 0-0 BAYERN MUNICH
45' + 1' Coman twists and turns on the left flank before finally being able to send a cross into the Wolfsburg box, but Dante does well to out-muscle Muller before guiding the ball into the safe hands of Casteels. That should be the final attacking move fo the first half.
45' The fourth official has indicated that there will be just one minute of added time.
44' What an excellent chance for Wolfsburg! Draxler picks up the ball on the right wing and sends a great cross over to Kruse at the far post. The striker beats Kimmich in the air and nods the ball down to the Schafer, but the left-winger ends up firing his first-time half-volley agonisingly wide of the far post. He really should have buried that!
42' Lahm breaks down the right flank on a marauding run before firing a cross off the leg of Naldo and out for a corner. Alonso curls the set-piece into the middle of the box and towards Muller, but it's slightly mishit and is easily dealt with by the aforementioned Brazilian.
40' After eyeing up his target for at least a minute, Naldo steps up and unleashes a rocket of a shot that flies through the wall of Bayern shirts before being well saved by Neuer in the middle of the goal. There was plenty of power on that strike, but it was sent straight at the German goalkeeper.
39' After dealing with a half-hearted Bayern attack, Wolfsburg hit the visitors on the counter down the right flank. Kruse beats Alonso and holds up the ball before cutting it back to Arnold, who holds on to possession for a few seconds before being pushed over by Coman, resulting in a free-kick for the hosts 30 yards away from goal.
37' Muller picks up the ball just outside of the Wolfsburg penalty area and is immediately closed down by white shirts, but he does well to send a pass over to Costa on the left flank. The Brazilian skips past Trasch before firing a low cross into the box, but it's poorly hit and fails to find Lewandowski before being dealt with by Naldo.
35' What a run by Naldo! The centre-back somehow finds himself deep inside the Bayern half of the pitch, and he keeps muscling his way forward as he charges towards the edge of the penalty area. Upon reaching the box he fires a rocket of a strike, but it takes a deflection off the foot of Bernat that sends it bouncing into the hands of Neuer.
33' It's heating up on the pitch! First, Schafer goes down inside the Bayern penalty area, resulting in half hearted appeals from the Wolfsburg players, before Gustavo charges into Robben and fouls the Dutchman with a rash challenge. The hosts aren't at all happy with the decision and immediately surround the referee, but the man in charge ignores their pleas and awards a free-kick to the visitors.
31' And now Kruse is presented with a chance on goal! Wolfsburg quickly push forward after dealing with Lewandowski's cross, and Dante picks out the hosts' striker with a lofted pass into the Bayern half of the pitch. He does well to control the ball before firing a bouncing shot towards the bottom right-hand corner of the net, but Neuer is there to deal with the danger.
30' Great save by Casteels! Arnold is caught sleeping on the ball midway inside the Wolfsburg half of the pitch, allowing Bayern to quickly break away on a swift counter-attack. Muller immediately tees up Lewandowski, who darts into the right-hand side of the penalty area before trying to pick out Coman with a low cross, but the Polish striker's attempted pass is brilliantly cut out by the Belgian goalkeeper before it can find the young winger.
28' Bayern embark on a lengthy series of passes that seems to last for an age. They work the ball around patiently deep inside the Wolfsburg half of the pitch before Costa picks it up just outside of the box, but just as he tries to spin and shoot he's dispossessed by a vital interception by Gustavo.
26' Chance for Muller! Robben cuts inside from the right wing and tries to tee up Lewandowski, but he sees his attempted pass deflect off the outstretched foot of Gustavo and up into the air. Luckily for the Dutchman, the ball drops down on to the foot of the aforementioned German, who immediately unleashes a thumping volley from the edge of the penalty area that Casteels does well to hold on to.
24' Bayern keep swarming into the Wolfsburg half of the pitch as they embark on a lengthy series of quick passes. They work the ball around well on the edge of the box before Lewandowski tries to tee up Muller, but the latter's run is slightly mistimed and the linesman's flag is quickly raised as a result.
22' Once again, Coman finds himself in space down the left wing and beats Trasch far too easily before swinging a cross into the Wolfsburg box. This time the Frenchman's pass is much better, but Rodriguez is just about able to cut out the danger before it can find Muller.
20' Poor pass by Coman! Bayern break forward on a quick counter-attack that takes the disjointed Wolfsburg back line by surprise. The ball is worked out to the left-hand side of the penalty area, where it finds the French youngster, but his attempted cross is completely overhit and flies out for a throw-in on the opposite wing.
18' Chance for Kruse! Wolfsburg have enjoyed themselves over the past few minutes, and it is now they who are on the front foot and swarming forward. They win themselves a free-kick on the left flank that Draxler swings onto the head of the aforementioned striker, who is in a great position in the middle of the Bayern box, but his effort on goal is tipped away by a great save by Neuer.
16' Lewandowski weaves his way between the middle of Trasch and Gustavo before trying to test Casteels from just inside the Wolfsburg penalty area, but there's far too much power on the Polish striker's shot and, as a result, it sails comfortably over the top of the crossbar.
15' Bayern are unable to fully clear the danger, which allows Wolfsburg to keep pushing forward. Vieirinha picks up the ball on the right wing and immediately tees up Draxler, who does well to find a pocket of space in between Alaba and Bernat. The youngster then spins and fires a shot towards goal, but it's sent straight into the hands of Neuer.
14' Almost a costly mistake by Kimmich! The makeshift centre-back tries to send a pass back to Neuer but it's horribly underhit. For a moment it looks as if Kruse is going to be able to latch onto the ball but the Bayern goalkeeper is just about able to cut out the danger at the vital moment.
13' So close from Alonso! Wolfsburg are finding it impossible to break out of their own half of the pitch, which is allowing Bayern to completely dominate possession. Coman sprints down the left wing before seeing his cross half dealt with by Naldo, but the Brazilian's header can only find the aforementioned Spaniard, who immediately unleashes a rocket of a shot from the edge of the penalty area that flies just inches wide of the near post.
11' A clumsy challenge from Naldo sends Lewandowski flying and results in a free-kick for Bayern 30 yards away from the Wolfsburg goal. Alonso steps up and swings a lovely cross into the heart of the penalty area, but the aforementioned centre-back is able to nod it out for a corner before the ball can reach a black shirt.
9' Bayern continue swarming into the Wolfsburg half of the pitch as they put the hosts under an incredible amount of pressure. They earn themselves another corner on the right wing, which is worked over to Lahm on the edge of the box, but the right-back ends up firing his first-time strike well over the top of the crossbar.
7' Like Dante a few moments ago, Alaba decides to fire a thumping pass from the halfway line. Unlike the Brazilian's, this one finds its target, but Muller's first touch is poor and he's unable to get the ball out of his feet before Rodriguez pokes it out for a corner with an excellent sliding tackle.
5' Dante picks up the ball in space just inside the Wolfsburg half of the pitch and immediately launches a lofted pass up towards the Bayern penalty area. It flies over Kimmich and heads towards Kruse, but the striker misses the ball by the narrowest of margins and, as a result, it ends up bouncing into the hands of Neuer.
3' Wolfsburg quickly push forward from the restart, with Schafer doing well to beat Lahm for pace before heading towards the byline. His final touch is poor, however, and it sends the ball out of play for a goal-kick before he can send a cross into the Bayern box.
2' Early chance for Costa! After a patient start by the visitors, Coman flies down the left flank on an excellent run before skipping past Trasch and penetrating the penalty area. The youngster then forces Casteels into making a good save with a cross-cum-shot that the goalkeeper pushes away, before the aforementioned Brazilian sees his close-range strike thumped away from danger by Rodriguez.
1' And we're off! Wolfsburg get us underway, attacking from left to right.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
Dieter Hecking has decided to name an unchanged Wolfsburg side to the one that drew 1-1 with Hertha Berlin last weekend, whilst Bayern boss Pep Guardiola has made two alterations to the team that featured in the aforementioned game against Juventus, with Xabi Alonso and Kingsley Coman coming into the starting line-up to replace Arturo Vidal and Thiago, respectively.
Bayern Munich substitutes: Ulreich, Benatia, Rode, Thiago, Vidal, Ribery, Gotze.
Bayern Munich XI (4-1-4-1): Neuer; Lahm, Kimmich, Alaba, Bernat; Alonso; Coman, Muller, Robben, Costa; Lewandowski.
Wolfsburg substitutes: Grun, Knoche, Azzaoui, Putaro, Stolze, Schurrle.
Wolfsburg XI (4-4-2): Casteels; Vieirinha, Naldo, Dante, Rodriguez; Draxler, Trasch, Gustavo, Schafer; Arnold, Kruse.
There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this afternoon…
Pep Guardiola’s men head to Lower Saxony unbeaten in their last 11 competitive games, but it hasn’t been entirely plain sailing for the league leaders. In Tuesday evening’s Champions League clash against Juventus they suffered a second-half collapse and surrendered a 2-0 lead, one that means that it is far from certain that they will feature in the quarter-finals of the competition. Meanwhile, three weeks ago they were held to a goalless draw by fourth-place Bayer Leverkusen, who, like Borussia Monchengladbach last year, showed that it is possible to stop the Bayern juggernaut.
As expected, it is Bayern that lead the way in the Bundesliga by a comfortable margin thanks to a plethora of impressive results over the course of the season, and with 22 games on the board they have only failed to win in three of those, with just one, against Borussia Monchengladbach back in December, ending in a shock defeat. Bar that it has been much of the same from the reigning champions, who, despite having to deal with several injuries, particularly in defence, enjoy an eight-point lead over nearest challengers Borussia Dortmund and are currently well on their way to picking up their fourth consecutive league title.
Things have looked slightly better for them in recent weeks, however, and they head into today’s big clash unbeaten in their last three games. Julian Draxler, the talented ex-Schalke youngster that they hoped would fill the void left by De Bruyne, has enjoyed an impressive month, and he finally seems to be back to his best after suffering two injury-stricken seasons. The 22-year-old has scored four times in his last five appearances - including a double against Gent in the Champions League - and he will no doubt play an important role today as Wolfsburg try to pick up three much-needed points against a Bayern side that thrashed them 5-1 the last time they met in the league.
What a difference a year makes. At the start of February 2015, Wolfsburg were flying high near the top of the Bundesliga table after shocking everyone with a 4-1 thrashing of Bayern on this very ground. Now, they are languishing in eighth place, just three points clear of 11th-place Stuttgart and with only one win from their last nine domestic games. Whilst the Wolves’ problems lie deeper than just one man, the selling to Manchester City of talented talisman Kevin De Bruyne has hit them hard, resulting in a noticeable lack of creative threat in the final third of the pitch. Add to that the injury to striker Bas Dost, who scored 16 times in the league last season, and you can see why Dieter Hecking’s men are struggling.
Good afternoon and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s Bundesliga game between Wolfsburg and Bayern Munich at the Volkswagen Arena.
