Wigan Athletic - Tottenham Preview: Harry Redknapp's men looking to bounce back from League Cup exit

Spurs were knocked out of the cup after a gruelling 120 goalless minutes against Stoke City resulted in penalties, and face a team who have not lost in their last six home games

PROBABLE LINEUPS

Maloney, Moses, Di Santo

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez could be without Emmerson Boyce (hamstring), Antolin Alcaraz (thigh) and Steve Gohouri (calf), as this fixture may have come a little too soon for the aforementioned injured players.

Hugo Rodallega (knee) suffered an injury in the 3-1 defeat at Everton, and will not play any part in the game against Harry Redknapp's men.

Tottenham Hotspur are without Michael Dawson (Achilles) and Steven Pienaar (groin) for the trip to the DW Stadium, while Niko Kranjcar and Aaron Lennon are both doubts for the upcoming clash.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Wigan Athletic have not lost in their last six Premier League games at home, winning on three occasions.
  • Franco Di Santo has already scored three goals in five appearances this season, clearly bettering the dubious distinction of having bagged a solitary goal last term.
  • The Latics have beaten Tottenham only twice in their last 12 Premier League meetings.
  • During that game, Jermain Defoe (pictured right) etched his name into the Premier League history books by scoring five goals. Only Andy Cole, Alan Shearer and Dimitar Berbatov have achieved that feat.
  • In a total of 13 meetings between the two sides, Spurs have scored 30 times whereas Wigan have responded with only 12 goals.

The former Chelsea prospect has scored thrice in his last three appearances in the league, and will want to build on his early season form while helping his side hold their own against a team that beat Liverpool 4-0 in the last round of games.

The England striker has a terrific record against Wigan, with his five-goal haul in 2009 being his crowning glory. With the forward having returned to in the 4-4-2 formation alongside Emmanuel Adebayor, he is likely to fancy his chances against Roberto Martinez's men.

Editor's Prediction

Both sides are capable of producing a result on the day, with Tottenham heading into this on the back of a stunning performance against Liverpool last week.

However, the Latics have the advantage of playing at home, and may be able to sneak a draw considering that they have not had any major slip-ups since the 9-1 defeat at White Hart Lane, but Spurs should prove to be just too strong.
