Wigan Athletic - Norwich City Preview: Paul Lambert's Premier League new boys hoping to pick up perfect start

The hosts are waiting on the fitness of midfielder James McCarthy as the likes of David Jones and Kyle Naughton prepare for their top-flight debuts at their new clubs

Doubts remain over whether Antolin Alcaraz and Hugo Rodallega will start for the Latics or not, with the pair having only recently returned to the first-team fold following their extended post-Copa America break. James McCarthy, who missed three months of action last season, is extremely doubtful after picking up an ankle knock against Villarreal last Sunday.

Norwich were hit by knee injuries to James Vaughan and Elliot Ward during their pre-season training camp in Germany back in July and the pair have no chance of making it at the DW Stadium. Steve Morison arrived at the club from Millwall in the summer but is likely to start on the bench as Paul Lambert sticks to trusted striking duo Grant Holt and Simeon Jackson.

  • Had last season's Premier League been based on home results only, Wigan would have been relegated with 26 points.
  • The Latics are the youngest club in the division, having been formed in 1932.
  • The last time Wigan beat the East Anglian outfit at home was in the 1987 FA Cup fourth round at the club's old ground, Springfield Park. They have never done so in the league.
  • Norwich are the first team since Manchester City in 1999-2000 to win successive promotions to the Championship and Premier League.
  • Since Paul Lambert (pictured right) took over at Carrow Road in 2009, the club have not lost two consesutive league games in the same season.
  • The Canaries boss became the first British player to win the Champions League with a foreign club when he was was part of the Borussia Dortmund side that beat Juventus in 1997.

The youngster arrived at Wigan at the age of 19 in 2009 being described as one of English football's most promising young talents. Now, having struggled with injuries last term, it is time for the former Crystal Palace man to fulfil his potential.

Having grabbed the only goal in the Latics' 1-0 friendly win over Spanish Champions League hopefuls Villarreal, the now 20-year-old will be looking to take over the attacking responsibilities of departee Charles N'Zogbia and boost the DW Stadium outfit's survival chances with goals this season. A home tie against Norwich seems the ideal place to start.

If the Canaries are going to stay on their Premier League perch this season, you cannot help but think that the goals of Grant Holt will be vital to their cause.

Having signed from Shrewsbury Town in 2009, the 30-year-old has scored 45 times in 84 league games since moving to East Anglia and has been the club's player of the year for consecutive seasons.

Physically strong and instinctive in the area, Holt will feel that he can exploit Wigan's weaknesses in defence and kick off his, and Norwich's, season in style

Editor's Prediction

The visitors will be hoping to provide a party atmosphere at the DW Stadium and will no doubt look to feed off the excitement of their fans following their promotion. However, Roberto Martinez turned down Aston Villa in the summer and clearly sees potential in his squad, despite their troubles at the back. With both sides keen to play good football yet likely to be a bit rusty following the summer, this could be a really entertaining match-up, with plenty of goals to boot.
