Ali Al Habsi
The keeper didn’t have a save to make in the first half as his defenders remained resolute in front of him. Had to be alert more in the second half but only to claim crosses and marshal his defence.
The Paraguayan was generally solid although a few lapses in concentration nearly cost his team. His second-half performance was much more resolute as United really began to press.
The defender looks accomplished at right wing-back and his forays into the United half caused plenty of problems, forcing Ashley Young to drop back and cover him. Defensively he was solid
Had a solid game at the back for Wigan and kept going right until the final whistle as United continued to press in search of a goal. He was lucky to survive a handball shout in the 72nd minute but didn’t let that affect him and worked hard in front of Al Habsi.
The Scot leads by example and he was strong against the United strikers throughout the match.
The winger was very dangerous throughout the game and really caused United’s defence problems. He has plenty of pace which enabled him to close down the United defenders. Was very unlucky not to open the scoring in the first half as his header was disallowed by the assistant referee for a push by Caldwell on De Gea.
He works so well with McCarthy in the middle and lots of their hard work caused mistakes in the United midfield and enabled Wigan to break forward and threaten.
Caused continuous problems down the left side and gave Phil Jones a torrid time, but his delivery lacked some accuracy which meant very little for Di Santo to feed off.
The Scot was constantly on the move and he caused problems for Jones throughout the game. His set-piece delivery was always dangerous and he showed in the 52nd minute that his finishing was also deadly as he curled a beautiful shot beyond De Gea. Replaced by Sammon in the 77th minute.
F. Di Santo
The striker worked hard and gave his side plenty of movement up front but he was not able to test De Gea with a shot. His hold up play was excellent though, and gave Wigan something to work from. Replaced by Diame with 20 minutes to go.
The keeper was lucky not to concede in the first half when he failed to claim a corner but was let off by the assistant’s flag. He wasn’t so lucky in the 52nd minute though as Maloney’s long range drive curled past him despite his full length dive.
The pace of Moses caused him trouble and he needed the support of Young and latterly Rooney to control the winger.
He looked shaky at full-back in the first half and Wigan’s left sided players, Maloney and Beausejour, took advantage of that as they caused problems for the United defence. He improved slightly in the second half but never looked comfortable.
After recent good performances, the centre-back had a shaky start to the game, being caught in possession by Di Santo and Moses.
Calming influence alongside Evans but also had a few shaky moments in the first half. Much better in the second but could do nothing about Maloney's strike.
Struggled against the energy and intensity of McArthur and McCarthy in the opening hour and never had time on the ball to dictate play. He found himself in possession more in the second half but failed to create any chances of note for his side.
Like Carrick he struggled to get a grip on the game in the first half as Wigan’s midfield dominated. He was moved out to the wing in the second half but continued to be ineffective.
The winger was given a warm round of applause before kick off on his return to the DW Stadium and he repaid that support with a poor performance. He was rarely involved in United attacking moves and found himself well handled by Beausejour.
Found himself tracking back to cover the runs of Boyce more than he would have expected. He was replaced by Cleverley at half-time as United looked to bolster their midfield options.
Started the game alongside Hernandez but after some stern words from Sir Alex Ferguson he dropped off the Mexican to provide support to the midfield. Rarely had a sight on goal and was replaced by Nani in the 65th minute.
Had very little to work with in the first half but he did have United’s best chance as only a tackle from Caldwell stopped him pulling the trigger. He continued to be ineffective in the second half and was replaced by Welbeck in the 58th minute.
- 40 B. Amos
- 12 C. Smalling
- 42 P. Pogba
On for Young at half-time and looked to give United a bit more bite in the middle.
- 13 Ji-Sung Park
Replaced Rooney in the 65th minute but had little impact on the game, though he did attempt one outrageous volley which sailed high over Al Habsi's crossbar.
Replaced Hernandez in the 58th minute but suffered from a similar lack of service.
