Live Commentary

  • Tim Poole at Upton Park: "Full time here at the Boleyn Ground and what a fantastic win for Sam Allardyce's men. Several men have made good claims today - Allardyce for a contract extension, Andy Carroll to be signed on a permanent deal. Carroll's two goals were phenomenal - the first a typical target man's header, the second a first-time volley. Gary O'Neills goal in the middle of those two was phenomenal on the counterrattack as well. The Baggies came to life a little in the second hald and scored from the spot through Graham Dorrans. But a bad day at the office was complete when Youssuf Mulumbu rightly received his marching orders for a petulant reaction to a refreeing decision as he kicked the ball at a West Ham player."
  • West Ham pull away from the relegation zone into 11th place with a deserved win over West Brom that followed a comfortable performance. Until Winston Reid lost concentration late on to give away a penalty on Romelu Lukaku to allow Graham Dorrans a consolation goal, the Hammers defence led by James Collins restricted the Baggies to speculative effort from outside the area. Midfielder Gary O'Neil stood out with his composure in possession getting the best out of the pace of Matt Jarvis and Ricardo Vaz Te on the flanks, and his delivery from a corner allowed Andy Carroll to head his side in front before his neat finish following a counter attack extended his team's lead. Andy Carroll's delicate second-half volley extended the Hammers' lead, and although the recently returned George McCartney suffered a worrying injury towards the end of the match, Sam Allardyce's side will be pleased that they are six points clear of the relegation with seven games remaining. For West Brom an uninspiring display was made worse by Youssuf Mulumbu's needless sending off, but Steve Clarke's side are in the top half of the table and their Premier League future looks to be assured nonetheless.

James Collins lofted the ball into the box with a free kick from the right flank on the half way line, and Carroll was unmarked as he drifted towards the right edge of the six-yard box. His finish was spectacular as he waited for the ball to drop over his shoulder before connecting with the ball with his weaker right foot to slot the ball into the bottom left corner.

  • 64'
Tim Poole at Upton Park: "Still no goals here in the second half and West Ham look comfortable with retaining possession considering their healthy lead. Their two goals could not be more different. The first from Andy Carroll was classic set-piece football at its best but Gary O'Neill's second was more resemblant of a Spanish counterattack."

Tim Poole at Upton Park: "It's been West Brom's half so far but they haven't actually had anything to show for it. The closest they have come is through Graham Dorrans once agin - but his free kick didn't exactly have Jussi Jaaskelainen quaking in his boots."

The referee gets the second half underway at Upton Park.
  • Tim Poole at Upton Park: "What a one-sided affair this has been. West Ham have been absolutely terrific here at the Boleyn Ground and Gary O'Neill, Andy Carroll and Matt Jarvis have given them a commanding lead against Steve Clarke's men upon his return to the ground where he was once upon a time assistant manager. In all honesty, I can't see a West Brom comeback here but if there is to be one, no doubt Romelu Lukaku will be at the centre of it."
  • West Ham have taken a deserved 2-0 lead at Upton Park after an impressive first half in which the Sam Allardyce's side have defended well to thwart West Brom and attacked with purpose when they had the ball. Steve Clarke's side have been mostly limited to shots from outside the box as James Collins and Winston Reid have dealt impressively with Romelu Lukaku and Shane Long. In attack the Hammers have looked potent on each flank through the pace of Matt Jarvis and Ricardo Vaz Te, while Andy Carroll has managed to impress in the air despite the height of Jonas Olsson and Gareth McAuley as he powerfully headed his side in front from a Gary O'Neil corner. O'Neil has come into the team in place of the injured Mark Noble but in addition to assisting the opening goal he proved his worth with a composed finish from the edge of the box after Vaz Te led a counter attack with a run up the right flank. The Baggies are already in the top half of the table and safe from relegation, while the Hammers look to have the motivation to see out the win.

He gets the deflection he is hoping for and the ball changes direction to the left, but the Hammers keeper tips the ball onto the inside of the post and gathers the ball.
  • 13'
Dorrans looked to have given the ball away but Youssuf Mulumbu wins it back and after Romelu Lukaku receives the ball he wins a free kick outside the edge of the box.

The referee gets the game underway at Upton Park!
  • Tim Poole at Upton Park: "A nice little fact for you today: Kevin Keen - one of Steve Clarke's coaches at West Brom - is returning to Upton Park after 18 years of service with West Ham. Keen played for the Hammers, coached for the Hammers and was even caretaker manager at Upton Park on no less than THREE separate occasions. The 46-year-old was at one point tipped to take over on a permanent basis but Sam Allayrdyce was instead handed the job. Completing a full circle, Allardyce was also West Brom assistant manager under Brian Talbot from 1989 to 1991."
  • Tim Poole at Upton Park: "For visiting West Brom, what a fairytale story this season has been. Comfortably placed in eighth and with three wins in their last five, the Baggies - under the stewardship of Steve Clarke - are on course for their best ever Premier League finish. The Scot, who used to be Gianfranco Zola's number two at West Ham, has absolutely flourished in his debut season in management and looks set for a top-half finish at the very first time of asking. The West Midlands club have been in the top half all season and a win today would equal their previous best points tally of 47, which was achieved both last year and the year before under current England boss Roy Hodgson."
  • Tim Poole at Upton Park: "Sitting just six points above the relegation zone in 14th place, it's safe to say West Ham are not enjoying their finest hour. And with two wins in nine games – and three defeats in their last four - hardly making for pleasant reading, one thing that isn't quite yet safe is the Hammers' Premier League status. A particular problem seems to exist in attack, with the east Londoners having scored more than one goal only once in their last nine outings, taking just seven points in that time. The overall result: a cloud of uncertainty surrounds the future of manager Sam Allardyce."
  • Tim Poole at Upton Park: "West Ham welcome skipper and top scorer Kevin Nolan back for his 450th league appearance, although there is no Joe Cole, Mark Noble or George McCartney, while James Tomkins missed out on a start - but could come on for his 150th game for the Hammers. The Baggies, meanwhile, are without James Morrison, Zoltan Gera and George Thorne, but the controversial Peter Odemwingie is included on the bench."
  • West Brom XI: Foster; Jones, McAuley, Olsson, Ridgewell; Yacob, Mulumbu; Dorrans, Brunt, Long; Lukaku. Subs: Myhill, Popov, Tamas, Thomas, Rosenberg, Odemwingie, Fortune
  • West Ham: Jaaskelainen; Demel, Reid, Collins, O'Brien; Nolan, Diame, O'Neil; Vaz Te, Carroll, Jarvis. Subs: Henderson, McCartney, Tomkins, Collison, Taylor, C Cole, Chamakh
  • Tim Poole: "Good afternoon to you all here from Upton Park where, misleadingly, we are nowhere near the west of anything, even though West Ham take on West Brom! East London is the location - and for a limited time only, the Boleyn Ground is the venue. Yes, the Hammers learnt last week that they will be playing their football at the Olympic Stadium in three years time. What better way to celebrate the news than with a win today?"
