West Brom - Sunderland Preview: Baggies look to build on Anfield win

The home side have only one win in their last six since Boxing Day and face a Black Cats side that has lost their last two league games but sit six points away from the drop zone

Goran Popov is still suspended after receiving a red card for spitting against Tottenham, so will be missing for the second game from the Baggies' defence.

Zoltan Gera and George Thorne (both knee) are  long-term absentees, and are expected to miss the rest of the season.

However, these are the only worries for West Brom manager Steve Clarke, who still has a strong squad to choose from.

Meanwhile, the Black Cats may be missing left-sided players Danny Rose (hamstring) and James McClean (ankle), who are both doubtful for this game, while Lee Cattermole (knee) is likely to miss out.

If Rose is not fit for this game, John O'Shea may be shuffled across to left-back, while Phil Bardsley could be brought in at right-back.

However, other than these doubts, Sunderland have no other problems so have a strong squad to choose from.

If the Baggies are to be successful, they will need midfielder Brunt to be on top form on the left-hand side. The 28-year-old has overcome a number of injury problems to become a very important player for West Brom, and the club's captain will be crucial both in open play and from set-pieces if they are to build on their recent win.

For Sunderland, striker the Scotland striker will once again present their most potent attacking threat as he leads the line. The 25-year-old has scored 10 goals in the Premier League this season since joining from Wolves, and will present significant problems for the West Brom defenders if he is in good form.
Prediction
West Brom only have one win since the Christmas period, but after a somewhat surprising win at Anfield, this game will be a good chance to build on it.

Games between these sides always feature plenty of goals, and while Sunderland will be hopeful of success, the Baggies’ home advantage should help them enormously in this one.
