Scottish midfielder seals home win for the Baggies with long-range strike that sees the Hoops' poor away form continue in an otherwise poor match

West Brom piled more pressure on relegation-threatened QPR with a 1-0 victory as a 30 yard Graham Dorrans strike settled a poor game at the Hawthorns.

Neither side dominated the game and chances were at a real premium with neither goalkeeper really tested in the 90 minutes.

The game was won with one moment of brilliance in the match as Dorrans fired an excellent long-range strike past Paddy Kenny midway through the first half. Bobby Zamora wasted several good openings for Mark Hughes' side.

West Brom made six changes to the side that was convincingly beaten by Manchester City earlier this week. Roy Hodgson reverted back to Peter Odemwingie and Marc-Antoine Fortune up front with Chris Brunt and Jerome Thomas the men chosen to occupy the wide positions.

Jonas Olsson was due to line-up in central defence alongside McAuley but he injured his groin in the pre-match warm up and was replaced by Craig Dawson in the starting line-up.

After serving his suspension for a red card at Old Trafford, Shaun Derry returned the QPR side in place of Akos Buzsaky, the return of the experienced midfielder was the only change Hughes made from the side that beat Swansea.

The game started at a very slow pace but the home side did create an opening in the eighth minute when Fortune robbed Derry deep inside the QPR half and rolled the ball into the path of Odemwingie but the Nigerian dragged his left-footed shot wide.

Midway through the opening half the first real moment of quality brought the first goal and it was a lovely long-range strike from Dorrans. Odemwingie laid the ball into the path of the Scottish midfielder, who was not closed down quickly enough and fired a 30-yard strike into the back of the net with Paddy Kenny only able to get fingertips to it.

The visitors were hardly in the game but they did create two good openings in the first half, the first of which fell to Samba Diakite in the 33rd minute.

Jamie Mackie twisted and turned Ridgewell inside out on the right hand side before rolling the ball into the Mali midfielder inside the penalty area, he was able to turn his defender but fired the wrong side of Ben Foster’s left hand post.

Six minutes later the Rs should have been level. Joey Barton delivered an inch-perfect cross from the right wing with the outside of his right boot and although Zamora got above his marker, he was unable to direct his header on goal.

Albion began the second half keen to double their advantage and they came very close in the openings minutes as Billy Jones struck the post following a neat move.

Brunt played a lovely ball inside the QPR defence to Odemwingie, the striker back heeled the ball into the path of Jones but his poked shot struck the post with Kenny beaten.

The visitors began to press again and the introduction of Shaun Wright-Phillips gave them some extra impetus but Foster continued to be untested.

The winger did deliver some dangerous crosses into the penalty area but there was never anyone there to take advantage and get their side level.

Zamora had another fantastic chance in the 75th minute but he made an absolute mess after great work from Adel Taarabt, the Moroccan rolled a low pass onto the left foot of Zamora only for the striker to skew his shot harmlessly wide of goal.

Substitute, Shane Long should have doubled Albion's lead in injury time but he fired wide of Kenny's goal from the edge of the penalty area when it seemed easier for the Irishman to score.
