West Bromwich Albion - Manchester City Preview: Carlos Tevez return to lift Blues' gloom

West Bromwich Albion - Manchester City Preview: Carlos Tevez return to lift Blues' gloom

TEAM NEWS

West Bromwich Albion

Manager Roberto Di Matteo has been thrilled to welcome back September's Premier League player of the month Peter Odemwingie to training this week. The Nigeria international is likely to be ready to start for the first time since the 1-1 draw with Bolton Wanderers on October 2.

Midfielder James Morrison is unlikely to be ready, however, after he failed to recover from a knee knock. He is joined on the sidelines by the suspended Gonzalo Jara.

Centre-back Jonas Olsson is set for a six-week spell out with damage to his Achilles. Pablo Ibanez should fill in for the giant Swede after his red card against Blackpool was overturned.

Probable starting XI: Carson; Zuiverloon, Tamas, Ibanez, Shorey; Thomas, Scharner, Mulumbu, Tchoyi, Brunt; Odemwingie

Manchester City

After three defeats on the spin, the expected return of Carlos Tevez from leave in Argentina is a huge boost for boss Roberto Mancini.

Tevez should come straight back into the starting side along with stars such as Yaya Toure, Kolo Toure and Joe Hart who didn't play against Lech Poznan.

Left-back Aleksandar Kolarov is expected to be restricted to the substitutes' bench after he was handed a cameo role against the Polish side after more than two months out with ankle ligament damage.

Midfielder Michael Johnson is the only senior player unavailable after he suffered a knee knock during his comeback from a long-term abdominal injury.

Probable starting XI: Hart; Boateng, Kolo Toure, Kompany, Bridge; Yaya Toure, de Jong, Barry; Tevez, Adebayor, Silva

Mancini's week to forget

The pressure gauge is creeping up on Mancini after his big spending Citizens suffered three defeats on the bounce. The losses to Arsenal, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Lech Poznan have seen questions aksed about his capability to realise owner Sheikh Mansour's dreams.

A trip to a newly promoted side would be some comfort in most seasons, but West Brom's fine form puts them in sixth place in the table. The Italian will be delighted to see Tevez back to inspire his wayward troops.

Murmurs of discontent among the squad have dominated the back pages. Three points at The Hawthorns would hold back the rumours until Wednesday's titanic derby with Manchester United.

11 men on the pitch is better than nine

What hair is left on Di Matteo's head was probably torn out on Monday night as a combination of poor refereeing and reckless tackling condemned his side to a loss against Blackpool.

Although Ibanez and Jara were sent to the showers, West Brom could rightly claim they played the best football. Men like Chris Brunt, Youssuf Mulumbu and Paul Scharner wil need to be at their best again to see off City's billionaires.

Defensive midfielders are supposed to plug away in the background, but Mulumbu has got on the score sheet in West Brom's last two matches.

He was particularly impressive against Blackpool and fought to keep his depleted side in the contest. Mulumbu will need to be at his competitive best again when faced with Yaya Toure, Barry and De Jong.

C. Tévez

Position: Attacker

Tevez has been sorely missed since he hobbled off with a dead leg against Arsenal. The absence of his trademark energy and return of 28 goals in his last 32 Premier League appearances has left a gaping hole.

With the Baggies proving capable of competing in the top flight, the striker's star quality will be needed to ensure all three points.
