Jurgen Klopp's men have been hit by the injury of key defensive figure Mats Hummels but will be buoyed by finally bagging a win in their last match, beating Eintracht Braunschweig

Borussia Dortmund head to the Weserstadion on Saturday defending a winning run against Werder Bremen that stretches back to 2011.

The Schwarzgelben have won their previous five meetings with Bremen, last tasting defeat against this weekend's opponents in May 2011 in a 2-0 reversal that saw goals from Mikael Silvestre and Claudio Pizarro.

A continuation of their strong recent results against Bremen would allow Dortmund to build on their hard-fought 2-1 victory against Eintracht Braunschweig last time out.

The win at the Eintracht Stadion ended a run of four Bundesliga matches without a win and boosted Dortmund's hopes of challenging Bayer Leverkusen for second place.

While victory on Saturday would not take Dortmund any higher than third, defeat could see them overtaken by rivals Schalke, who face Hannover on Sunday.

Despite picking up their first Bundesliga victory since the end of November on Friday, Dortmund have been hit with an injury blow to defender Mats Hummels.

Hummels suffered an injury to his right foot in a friendly against Fortuna Dusseldorf on Tuesday and faces a two-week absence - news that will likely buoy a Bremen side three points off the relegation play-off spot.

Dortmund have won 82 per cent of their Bundesliga games with Hummels in the starting XI this season, while without him that figure drops to 25 per cent.

Robin Dutt's men have taken just five points from the last 24 available in the Bundesliga and have scored once against Dortmund in their last five encounters.

Furthermore, Dortmund attackers Robert Lewandowski and Marco Reus have each scored twice in their last three appearances against Bremen.

Dutt will be hopeful January signing Ludovic Obraniak can make an impact if handed a debut, having signed from Bordeaux.

While victory could see Dortmund go within a point of Leverkusen, defeat for Bremen could suck them into the relegation mire ahead of potential six-pointers in the lower reaches of the league over the next few weeks.

After the visits of Dortmund and Borussia Monchengladbach, Bremen face Eintracht Frankfurt, Hamburg, Nurnberg, Stuttgart and Freiburg - all of whom occupy spots in the bottom six.
