Made an incredible start to the seocond half, with fabulous instinctive saves to deny Torres twice, Ramires and then even his own team-mate Ruiz. Went on to make another vitally important stop from Anelka in the final minutes.
Might have conceded a penalty for bringing down Torres early on, but went on to do well, showing plenty of strength.
Officially a left-back, he spent arguably more time in the Chelsea half than his own in an industrious attacking effort.
Saw plenty of the ball in partnership with Alba down the left, with both seemingly operating as wingers for much of the time. Withdrawn after an hour in reaction to Lampard's goal.
An unconvincing display from the centre-back, even forcing his keeper into a save when he nearly diverted Lampard's corner into his own net.
Forced Malouda to look to drift away in search of the ball and got forward plenty as he likes to do.
With the home side's attacks mainly coming down the left, the winger did not have so much to do and was taken off as the second half wore on.
Lucky not to have cost his side an early goal after a loose pass set Torres clear through on goal.
A disappointing showing from the prodigious youngster, with Valencia's first-half threat coming primarily from the flank, and was later overshadowed to an extent by the substitute Piatti.
After a solid first period, he lost influence after the break and was replaced by Jonas as the hosts chased an equaliser.
Too often found drifting to the right and having to deliver crosses rather than be in a position to get on the end of them, but when the ball was placed for him on the penalty spot, he made no mistake.
Flapped at the odd cross but produced some useful saves in the second half, particularly late on from Jonas' curler.
Had less to do than his right-sided colleague but did his job well, despite letting a few crosses past in the opening minutes.
Strong when called upon, but often did not have to act as Soldado continually drifted wide to the right.
The Brazilian had an easier ride than Bosingwa to his right, and used that increased license to push forward on occasion, though to no great effect.
Frequently troubled by the attacking intent of both Mathieu and Alba down the Valencia left.
J. Obi Mikel
Kept Canales quiet throughout and showed good awareness to drop back into defence on the occasions when Luiz roamed forward.
Should have buried a second-half opportunity when Lampard freed him past all defenders. Not a surprise to see him the first player sacrificed.
Roamed around from his position on the left in search of some kind of purpose but found none in the first half. Improved after the break though and his impressive work set up Lampard's goal.
A quiet return to the Mestalla for the forward, who was stationed on the right but did not get involved enough in pegging back Jordi Alba.
Reminded all of his capabilties with what should have been an assist after 50 minutes, his great pass over the top to Ramires being squandered, and then a classy finish for the opener having been gifted space. Taken off with 10 minutes to go after running Chelsea for much of the second half.
Might have had a penalty after seemingly being brought down by Rami in the opening moments, but otherwise anonymous during the first half. Denied twice by the excellent Diego Alves after the break but substituted with 20 minutes to go after an ultimately frustrating outing.
- 13 Guaita
- 2 Bruno
Had time for one shot after coming on midway through the second half, which was decently hit but without real threat.
- 3 H. Maduro
- 21 Dani Parejo
Showed some spark after replacing Mathieu on the hour, with one shot skimming just wide and another forcing a top save from Cech.
Coming on with 20 minutes to make an impact, the midfielder might have equalised with a curling shot just kept out by Cech as his side pushed forward.
- 22 R. Turnbull
- 2 B. Ivanović
A second half replacement for Ramires, but was generally quiet.
- 6 Oriol Romeu
Only came on for Lampard with 10 minutes to go but found time to concede a penalty by stupidly jumping with his hand raised for a cross.
The substitute could maybe have done better with his late chance to retake the lead for the Blues.
- 11 D. Drogba
