Tottenham - Liverpool Preview: Reds looking to end four-match losing streak at White Hart Lane

The north London club bounced back from three defeats on the spin to overcome West Ham at the weekend, but Brendan Rodgers' side, unbeaten in eight, pose a far sterner test

Walker, Dawson, Caulker, Vertonghen
Sandro, Huddlestone
Lennon, Dempsey, Bale

Wisdom, Skrtel, Agger, Johnson
Allen, Sahin
Sterling, Gerrard, Enrique

Emmanuel Adebayor is serving the second game of his three-match ban following his red card against Arsenal, so Jermain Defoe will continue in attack.

Andre Villas-Boas is still without long-term absentees Younes Kaboul, Benoit Assou-Ekotto (both knee) and Scott Parker (Achilles).

Mousa Dembele marked his return from a hip injury with a 15 minute cameo against West Ham, though isn't expected to start on Wednesday.

Andre Wisdom missed Liverpool's trip to Swansea, but could return to the side in place of Stewart Downing with Glen Johnson moving to left-back.

Lucas Leiva played an hour for the Reds' Under-21 side on Friday, but is unlikely to be involved against Spurs, while Martin Kelly (knee) and Fabio Borini (foot) remain sidelined until the new year.

  • Tottenham are unbeaten in their last four league games against Liverpool, winning three and boasting a goal difference of plus seven.
  • Jermain Defoe and Luis Suarez (pictured, right) are the least shot-shy strikers in the league, firing 56 and 77 efforts at goal respectively.
  • Sandro has made more interceptions (48) than any other player this season.
  • Spurs' win over West Ham on Sunday was their 300th in the Premier League era.
  • The Reds have lost on each of their last four visits to White Hart Lane.
  • Luis Suarez has been directly involved in 70% of the Reds' league goals this season, scoring or assisting 12 of Liverpool's 17 strikes.
  • Liverpool recorded their first clean sheet on the road this season against Swansea on Sunday, and only their second in 13 away games.

The American, who looked set to join Liverpool until Spurs' deadline day swoop, has had a disappointing start to life at Tottenham, but against West Ham he gave his best performance in a Lilywhite shirt to date. Dempsey was involved in two of Spurs' goals, neatly assisting Gareth Bale with a cute chip, and rattled the crossbar. The Texan, who has been studying footage of his performances with his Portuguese manager, will be keen to show the Anfield club what they missed out on and build on a promising outing against the Hammers.

The Uruguayan hasn't scored in his three previous outings against Tottenham, but arrives at White Hart Lane as the league's leading hit-man. Suarez's quick feet, trickery and burst of speed could prove to be a particularly dangerous mix for either the ageing William Gallas or the immobile Michael Dawson to deal with. Suarez was frustrated by Chico Flores against Swansea, who was instructed to man-mark the former Ajax striker by Michael Laudrup, and will want to bounce back against Spurs and add to his 10-goal haul this season.
Tottenham haven't performed well at home this season and have struggled for concerted possession, while Liverpool have looked solid defensively, aided by their improved ball retention under Brendan Rodgers. The Reds could dominate possession, but that will play into Spurs' counter-attacking strengths. How Tottenham deal with Luis Suarez could decide the match, while Liverpool's midfield will have to support the Uruguyan more than they did against Swansea.
