Made a good stop to deny Rodallega apart from that had little to do, he was put under pressure by his own team-mates in kicking situations which he handled well especially after his error ridden performance of last week.
Stretchered off after five minutes with what looked to be as serious injury.
Defended well, his pace helped him deal with Rodallega and was always watchful of runners from midfield.
Tackled well and was dominant in the air but was often caught out by the ball over the top.
Made good forward runs, always offered for the ball. His pace and skill did give Wigan problems at times. Outstanding in the second half ripped Wigan to shreds.
Showed tenacity in the tackle, tried to drive his team forward whenever he had the ball.
Ahmed El Mohamady
Tried to get forward and support Henderson whenever he could, was decent in defence. Always offered for the ball and his crossing at times was very dangerous.
Looked good for large periods of the game going forward and tried to support Gyan when Welbeck went off. Was susceptible defensively which maybe the reason he was switched from centre to the right.
Used the ball intelligently and showed composure beyond his years in only his second start in the Premier League.
Looked hungry for the ball but will rue his lack of poise as he spurned some good opportunities. Good headed finish and looked much more energetic in the second half.
Looked unfit from the start but had one decent opportunity which he scuffed at Al-Habsi before he became the second Sunderland player to succumb to a first half injury.
Ali Al Habsi
Handling was good, He was always authoritative when the ball was in the box and took charge in pressure situations. Couldn’t do anything with goals.
Looked uneasy at left back and was often caught out of position. Was good with set pieces however and was good in the air.
Demolished in the second half by a rampant Sunderland, but wasn’t given much protection by midfield.
Defended well against Gyan, was dominant in the air and always ensured he tracked his man. Looked good in possession.
Poor at full back was torn apart by Sessegnon, not his best games for the Latics.
Great strike put side in the lead, but that was as good as it got, showed glimpses in first half but was poor for majority of the second.
Struggled to see much of the ball, and was well marshalled by Ferdinand, but did show some bright touches.
Tried to make things happen but struggled in the second half.
Out competed by Cattermole and Colback in the middle, struggled to get going as game passed him by.
Like his midfielders struggled with the Black Cats midfield;d but didn’t much of the ball.
Tried to hold ball up but was well marshalled by Turner and Onouha. Not his best game for the Latics.

Had an effect when he came on, was strong in the tackle and passed well. Gave Sunderland much needed guile.

Showed skill and poise, his use of the ball was and at times wrong footed the Wigan defence which led to chances for Steve Bruce’s side. Great cross for Gyan’s goal.
