Took an early knock from a Stoke set piece but recovered well dealing with everything the visitors could throw at him in the first half. Handled and kicked well for the majority of the game.
The former Manchester United man was solid all game and showed his class with a composed performance at the heart of the Black Cats defence against a testing Potters front-line.
Good finish for Sunderland’s first goal. Distribution from the back was inconsistent as he often looked for the long ball too often. Defended well against Jerome and Crouch.
Led from the front as he took charge of the Sunderland defence against Stoke’s potent aerial threat. He ensured his team-mates were organised as they faced a bombardment. Raided forward when he could.
Slightly fortunate to register his first goal for Sunderland as his shot took a huge deflection. Played well in the midfield with a strong physical presence as he won the ball back for his side on many occasions.
Good performance in his first Premier League start for the Black Cats. Showed a great range of passing in the midfield as he helped dominate the first half for the Black Cats, out-competing his Stoke counterparts in the midfield.
Ahmed El Mohamady
Great performance from the Egyptian as he terrorised the Stoke defence with his pace and accurate crossing. Kept Wilson busy all game.
Had a decent game but occasionally struggled against Walters as the striker used his physical presence well against him. Got forward to support Larsson as much as he could. Conceded needless free kicks.
Great ball to Bendtner for Sunderland’s second goal. Set pieces troubled the usually stout Stoke defence all afternoon. Tracked back well to help his team counter the threat of Stoke’s crossing. Great finish from free kick.
Moved well in the hole behind Bendtner as he made it difficult for the Stoke defence to pick him up. Linked up well with the Dane and also offered a route over the top of the Potters defence.
Good headed finish for the goal. Passed the ball and brought his midfield players into the game. Gave Shawcross and Woodgate a good aerial battle.
Could have done better for the Bramble strike but could do nothing for the second and third goals. Handling and kicking were okay.
Didn’t look comfortable at right-back. Was often caught out by the ball over the top of him and struggled to link-up with Walters down the right.
Great intervention in the first half stopped a certain Sunderland goal. However, he could have defended better from Larsson’s corner which led to Bramble’s opener. Given a tough time by Bendtner.
Had a tough game against Elmohamady. Couldn’t really get forward and support Etherington due to the threat of the counterattack against him by the Egyptian.
Not his best game as his lack of pace particularly on the turn made him struggle against Sessegnon. Won his fair share of headers against Bendtner but was culpable for the Black Cats' first goal.
Was anonymous for most of the game as Stoke tended to bypass their midfield. Struggled against the tenacity of Vaughan and was weak in the tackle. Won his side a few useful free kicks.
Made some good runs down the byline and put in a few decent crosses. Set-pieces were poor, however, as they rarely reached their destination.
Was the Potters' best chance of forcing a goal through his throw-ins which were slightly effective against the Black Cats. Midfield play was poor, though, and his passing was inaccurate and he was out-competed by Vaughan and Gardner.
Looked good against Richardson as he used his physical attributes to great effect. Won a lot of free kicks for his side. Crossed well but his team-mates were unable to take the chances that were on offer.
Tried to use his physical presence against the Sunderland back line but was unable to get the service he needed. He was well marshalled by Bramble and Brown, who closed him down every time he got the ball near the Black Cats box.
Had Stoke’s best chances of the game as he missed his header from six yards and failed to connect properly. Moved well up-front in the first half but faded in the second.

Kept the ball well as he came on for Larsson in the second half as the Black Cats controlled the middle of the park
Came on with little time left for Bendtner, so was unable to make a lasting impact.
On late as a sub but showed glimpses of his ability.

Tried to get his team going after coming on for Etherington but failed to see any of the ball as the hosts dominated.

Came on late as a sub and was unable to get up to the speed of the game as the Black Cats controlled the midfield.
Unable to make an impact after coming on as a sub in the second half .
