Live Commentary

  • Well, after the dire proceedings of the first half I think it is safe to say I didn't see three goals coming in the second! It was a good solid team display from Sunderland who in the end were well worth the progression to the next round. For Southampton, they will want to keep their good Premier League form going now that they are out. I hope that you enjoyed your stay with us tonight. From me Hayden Gribble, have a great evening.
  • FULL TIME - SUNDERLAND 2-1 SOUTHAMPTON. Gus Poyet's first win in charge at the Stadium of Light sees his current side set up a quarter final clash with his old side Chelsea after overcoming the Saints. Goals from Bardsley and Larsson gave the Premier League strugglers something to smile about before a late consolation goal from Yoshida set up a nervy final few minutes. But it is Sunderland who march on into the last eight.
  • 90' + 4'
    Yellow Card Sebastian Larsson
  • 90' + 2'
    Yellow Card Craig Gardner
  • 90' + 2'
    SubstitutionEmanuele Giaccherini Steven Fletcher
  • 90' + 2'
CHANCE! The Saints are piling numbers forward in search of an equaliser to take the tie into extra time. The ball falls to the feet of Ward-Prowse but he blasts it over from the edge of the area. Not long now, Sunderland fans!
  • 90'
There will be FOUR minutes of stoppage time.
  • 88'
    Goal Maya Yoshida
GOAL! Where did that come from!? Just as it looks like the Saints are dead and buried, Yoshida gets his head to a nod down from Hooiveld and puts the ball past Manonne to set up a grandstand finish. This ain't over yet!
  • 86'
    Goal Sebastian Larsson
GOAL! That is surely game, set and match for Gus Poyet's men now. It's the sub Larsson who gets the goal that much surely see the Black Cats through. The Swedish International drills a shot into the bottom corner after good work from Altidore.
  • 84'
PENALTY SHOUT! Again, Lee Mason turns down the Saints plea for a spot kick. Lallana went down in a challenge with Gadner but the referee is having none of it.
  • 82'
OUCH! Ki looks to have picked up a knock for Gus Poyet's men but decides to play on. Not long now for Sunderland to wait for a place in the quarter finals!
  • 80'
Gaston Ramirez off, Sam Gallagher on for the final stretch.
  • 79'
    SubstitutionG. Ramírez Sam Gallagher
  • 78'
Gardner sets up well from a free kick 30 yards from goal, but his effort is laughably off target. Terrible in the end!
  • 76'
Hooiveld given a yellow for kicking the ball away. Rather cheap booking to pick up.
  • 75'
    Yellow Card Jos Hooiveld
  • 74'
CHANCE! If that had sailed over the line, then Manonne would have had egg on his face. The goalie hits a O'Shea backpass first time right at the back of Lallana and the ball loops up...and goes a couple of feet wide.
  • 71'
Sunderland are doing their best to double their advantage but lone-man Altidore is being double-marked at the moment by the Saints centre backs.
  • 70'
    SubstitutionSteven Davis Adam Lallana
  • 70'
    SubstitutionOndřej Čelůstka Sebastian Larsson
  • 69'
Both sides are making changes. Can the Saints turn this tie on it's head? Or will Sunderland hang on? We are into the final 20 minutes.
  • 66'
PENALTY SHOUT! Chambers is sent tumbling down in the box, but the referee waves play on. No penalty! It did look a bit soft and the Saints man did go down a little too easily.
  • 65'
STAT ATTACK: Southampton are without a win in the last five meetings between these two sides (D3, L2).
  • 62'
CHANCE! Like buses, chances are coming every minute now. Johnson gets to the byline and whips a cross along the ground to Altidore but the American cannot make a clean connection.
  • 59'
    Goal Phil Bardsley
GOAL! Hallelujah, we have a goal! And it comes through a surprising source. Phil Bardsley has broken the deadlock at the Stadium of Light. A free-kick is floated in from the left and Brown forces a save from Davis, who spills the ball into the path of Bardsley, who slots the ball home. It might have been scrappy, but it counts and it is also the right-back's first goal for the Black Cats.
  • 58'
    Yellow Card Jack Cork
  • 57'
    SubstitutionTadanari Lee James Ward-Prowse
  • 56'
As James Ward-Prowse makes his bow it is clear that Pochettino is looking to inspire some more creativity in the Saints' midfield. Believe me, they need it!
  • 54'
CHANCE! Rodriguez has a glimpse of a chance to put the Saints ahead, but his tame effort from 25 yards is straight at Manonne. It is safe to say that neither goalkeepers have been threatened much in this tie.
  • 54'
After all that early excitement, I am afraid that the tempo has reverted back to the lull we expected in the first half. The tempo needs to be raised again if anybody is to make a breakthrough.
  • 52'
STAT ATTACK: Seven of Southampton's last eight League Cup ties against Premier League opposition have ended in defeat. (BBCSport)
  • 51'
CHANCE! Oh, Steven Davis should have made more of that. The former Aston Villa man finds himself 25-yards out and blasts his shot over, keeping the score goaless.
  • 49'
CHANCE! The Black Cats purr into life as Alitdore gets his head up to a cross from the left but finds Davis who plucks his effort out of the air.
  • 48'
Southampton have started strongly here as they set about probing the Sunderland defence right from the off.
  • 46'
We are back underway with Sunderland kicking from right to left.
  • The teams are back out...
  • What do we expect for the next 45? Well, some goalmouth action wouldn't go amiss! The second half is coming up.
  • HALFTIME - SUNDERLAND 0-0 SOUTHAMPTON. A goaless and unentertaining first half ends as both teams trudge down the tunnel to the dressing room. Gus Poyet and Mauricio Pochettino both need to galvanize their charges as both teams look rather uninspired at the moment. Here's to an all-action second half!
  • 45' + 1'
    Yellow Card Ki Sung-Yueng
  • 45'
There will be ONE minute of added on time.
  • 44'
CHANCE! Ramirez is the next Saints man to have a pop and he goes even closer to breaking the deadlock. The ball falls to Cork who managhes to find the playmaker but his shot is high and wide.
  • 42'
CLOSE! Ah. so close from Danny Fox as the Black Cats' defence is tested for the first time tonight. The youngster manages to fire a 30-yard shot wide of Manonne's goal. A warning shot, perhaps?
  • 39'
Celustka tries to get an attack going for the home side, but his long ball forward is overhit and falls straight into Davis' arms.
  • 36'
This tie has lacked tempo, passion, creativity and chances so far. Both maangers really need to get it into their player's heads that they arep laying for a quarter-final spot here.
  • 34'
Mauricio Pochettino looks inquisitive on the touchline as his side begin to step up their play. Then again. they have not tested Mannone at all yet this evening. How long until half time?...
  • 31'
STAT ATTACK: Sunderland have only scored one goal fewer (six) in their two League Cup games than they have managed in 10 Premier League matches. (BBCSport)
  • 29'
CHANCE! Once again it is the American Altidore who threatens the visitor's goal. He brings the ball down and from 25-yards fires an ambitious effort wide.
  • 26'
The possession stats suggest that it is the home side who are enjoying the better portion of the ball but they just can't find a ball through. Some moans and groans are emitting from the desolate stands. We have played nearly half an hour of this tie.
  • 24'
CORNER! The Saints win a corner but Ramirez' ball in is tame and cleared with ease by Gardner. Both teams need to shift through the gears in this quiet first half.
  • 22'
STAT ATTACK: Tonight marks former Manchester United defender Wes Brown's first start at the Stadium of Light since January 2012.
  • 20'
Sunderland seem to be enjoying a spell of possession but they are finding it difficult to carve out a chance. Still no goals.
  • 17'
The game has entered another quiet period. If you are looking for a bit of entertainment and the possibility of a Mexican wave, you won't find it here. The Stadium of Light is half empty on this bitterly cold night.
  • 15'
CHANCE! And just as I say that the Black Cats nearly carve out an opening goal. Celustka does brilliantly down the right as he pulls a low cross back to the waiting Giaccherini, but the striker somehow manages to hit the ball with his standing foot and it goes out of play.
  • 14'
There have been no further chances and the impetus is actually rather slow from both sides. The tempo needs a lift, here.
  • 12'
Sunderland are doing well to contain their opponents so far and restrict their passing play to the middle of the park. But all it takes is a lock-picking pass to unsettle the Gus Poyet's back four.
  • 10'
CHANCE! This time it is the home side who get forward and Altidore manages to slip inside the penalty area, but his shot is tame and smothered low by the Saints' keeper Kelvin Davis.
  • 8'
STAT ATTACK: Southampton have only conceded five goals in 12 games in all competitions this season. (BBCSport)
  • 6'
OVER THE BAR: Lee is causing some early conern in the Black Cats' defence as he picks up the ball following a weaving run from Ramirez but the striker's shot is way off target.
  • 3'
HALF-CHANCE! It's the visitors who look to break the deadlock first as Lee squeezes in-between O'Shea and Brown inside the box but sees his touch bounce harmlessly out of play for a goal kick.
  • 1'
KICK-OFF! We are underway at the Stadium of Light!
  • The teams are in the tunnel as kick-off is just moments away!
  • With ten minutes to go until kick-off, do you think that tonight's game will serve as a welcome distraction from poor league form for the home side? Or will the Saints continue their march? We shall find out soon!
  • Meanwhile Mauricio Pochettino has made a mammoth ten changes to the Saints' side. Only James Rodriguez has retained his place as the St Mary's outfit make the long travel up north to the Stadium of Light looking for a place in the last eight.
  • Sunderland boss Gus Poyet makes seven changes to his side that lost to Hull in the league at the weekend. Vito Mannone comes in for the injured Kieren Westwood between the sticks whilst the suspended Lee Cattermole and Andrea Dossena are replaced by Ondrej Celustka and Craig Gardner.
  • Southampton: Davis; Chambers,Yoshida, Hooiveld, Fox; Davis, Cork, Reed; Ramirez, Lee, Rodriguez. Subs: Gazzaniga, Clyne, Ward-Prowse, Lallana, Isgrove, Stephens, Gallagher.
  • Sunderland: Mannone; Celustka, Brown, O'Shea, Bardsley; Ki, Gardner, Colback; Johnson, Altidore, Giaccherini. Subs: Cabral, Larsson, Fletcher, Cuellar, Borini, Mavrias, Dixo.
