Shots on Target
Huge celebrations from the Sunderland fans at the Stadium of Light, but Newcastle will feel aggrieved not to pick up at least a draw. They arguably had the better of the game, but struggled to create clear-cut chances. I hope you have enjoyed the game. Goodbye for now!
90' + 5'
FULL-TIME! It's all over! In Gus Poyet's first home match in charge of Sunderland he guides them to a 2-1 win over Newcastle United in the Tyne-Wear Derby.
90' + 4'
What looks to be Newcastle's final chance sees Cabaye fire well over from range.
90' + 3'
They're playing this very cleverly. Sunderland win a fourth successive corner, killing almost all of Newcastle's hopes for a late equaliser.
90' + 3'
Unsurprisingly, Larsson takes a short corner. Sunderland play it well and win another.
90' + 2'
Corner for Sunderland. Larsson gets forward down the right, but his cross is deflected behind.
Four minutes of added time awarded at Stadium of Light.
Very nearly an own-goal by John O'Shea! Newcastle deliver into the area from deep and the former Manchester United man's header looped over his goalkeeper, but luckily for the hosts Westwood was able to catch it just in time.
Not long to hold out now for the hosts. Newcastle will feel hard done by.
Assist Jozy Altidore
Goal Fabio Borini
GOAL!!! Sunderland take the lead!! Colback played the ball forward to Altidore, who in turn laid it off for Borini to take a touch and lash into the top corner from about 25 yards out. What a brilliant goal, and what an important one it could be!
Clever play from Ben Arfa as he cuts in from the right, beating two men before shooting, but his effort is blocked.
Dossena tries to play a lofted pass through to the Sunderland forward's, but his effort is pretty awful and the ball runs through to Krul.
Fletcher stepped up to take the free-kick, surprisingly instead of Larsson, and the Scot played his shot straight into the wall. What a waste.
Altidore runs across the edge of the Newcastle area and draws a foul from Dummett in an excellent, central position.
Ameobi goes close this time as he shoots towards the bottom corner from just outside the penalty area, but his effort goes narrowly wide.
Good play by Santon as the Italian gets forward down the left, cuts inside, fakes to shoot and beats Larsson before firing just wide from the edge of the area.
Newcastle's build-up is calm and patient, but in the end Cabaye makes the rash decision to try his luck from range and Westwood denies him, unsurprisingly.
Changes on both sides now as Shola Ameobi replaces the quiet Remy for Newcastle, while Ki Sung-Yueng comes on for Cattermole.
Borini almost makes an immediate impact! The Italian seemed to trip Dummett, but the referee did not agree. The on-loan Liverpool man took a tough and fired straight at Krul from a tight angle, and although the goalkeeper let the ball go through him, he did eventually get a hold of it.
Poyet makes a change in attack as Borini replaces Johnson.
Sunderland look very short of ideas at the moment. Their wingers are too deep and when they try to play the ball infield they invariably give possession back to Newcastle. They are trying to play their football on the ground, but it clearly is not working. They should revert to their initial direct style.
Debuchy knocks the ball forward towards Cisse, but the Senegalese striker looks so disinterested when he tries to bring it down, thus knocking the ball out of play.
Another good chance for Newcastle. Ben Arfa runs across the edge of the area and tees up Cabaye, but his resulting shot fizzes just past Westwood left-hand post.
Johnson's corner goes all the way through to Colback, who lays it off for Larsson on the edge of the area, but his effort curls over the bar.
Sunderland are doing their best to restore their lead immediately. They win themselves as a corner as Debuchy tackles Johnson.
That goal is a real sucker-punch for the hosts. They had generally defended well in this match, but a lapse in concentration allowed Debuchy to ghost in behind their defence.
Assist Hatem Ben Arfa
Goal Mathieu Debuchy
GOAL!!! Newcastle equalise at the Stadium of Light! Cabaye picked out Ben Arfa to his left. The winger fired a low diagonal cross towards the bottom far corner of the goal and Debuchy arrived to knock into the net. That's his first goal for the club!
Colback is left furious with the referee after the midfielder is penalised for hauling Tiote down just inside the Newcastle half, but the referee looked to get the decision correct.
Cabaye is caught in possession not far from his own area as Altidore creeps up on him. The American takes the ball and runs at the defence. Dummett seems to foul him, but the ball drops to Fletcher who hammers wide.
Cisse has his first real involvement since coming on as he gets forward down the right, but the forward runs the ball straight out of play.
Good play by the hosts. Larsson knocks the ball into the area from deep, but Williamson nods it away just before Altidore can get his own head to it.
Tame opening minutes to this second half. Both sides are taking their time in possession.
Sunderland look to get on the front foot straight away, but Larsson's lofted ball over the Newcastle defence is too strong for Altidore.
Newcastle get the second period started.
With Newcastle losing, Alan Pardew has reacted by bringing on Papiss Cisse for Sissoko. The second half is a few minutes away.
45' + 2'
The final moments of the first half pass with little ceremony as Sunderland take a 1-0 lead into the break, but Newcastle have looked more threatening as the match has progressed.
Two minutes of stoppage time to be added at the end of this first half.
Cabaye stands over the set-play once again and curls a delivery into the area. Westwood, however, springs into the air and catches the ball unchallenged.
Newcastle win themselves another free-kick in a good position, as Sissoko is knocked over by Colback on the left flank.
Sunderland's good early start seems to have evaporated, apart from the goal. Their cutting edge in attack has been dulled, while their passing towards the forwards has been all over the place.
He hasn't been spectacular, but Newcastle's improving fortunes in this match seem to have come about following Ben Arfa's switch from his centre-forward position. Remy, who started on the left, is now central with Ben Arfa roaming.
Ben Arfa tries his luck from the set-piece, but his effort flies wide of the mark.
Nothing comes from the corner, but Tiote does win a free-kick in a good central position a few moments later.
Excellent play by Newcastle. Tiote finds himself under pressure at the back, but they continue to play themselves out of danger. In the end, Debuchy gets a cross in from the right, which Bardsley heads behind.
After Sunderland's initial dominance, Newcastle have really come into this and look in control at the moment. For all their possession, however, they still haven't created any clear-cut chances.
Tiote wastes a good opportunity as he marches down the left following a corner, but his cross goes over the area and out for a goal kick.
The ball goes into the area from Cabaye and Williamson heads it towards goal, but Sunderland clear it from amongst a big group of players.
Good counter-attack from Newcastle. Sissoko ends up with the ball on the edge of the area before playing Gouffran down the left. The attacker beats Bardsley, but his cross is deflected behind.
Cabaye does not escape a yellow card, however. The France international produces a fairly wild tackle on Colback and his name goes into the book.
Yellow Card Yohan Cabaye
Tiote takes the ball from Larsson, who tries to impose himself physically on the Newcastle man. The Ivorian simply decides to shove the Swede away from him and somehow escapes a booking.
Cattermole tries to take Tiote on in the centre of the pitch and appears to be tackled fairly. The referee sees it a different way, however, and gives Sunderland the free-kick.
Newcastle are now looking like a much more dangerous attacking threat now. Cabaye, again from deep, lobs a diagonal delivery into the area for Sissoko, but luckily for the hosts Westwood punches away just before getting clattered.
Cabaye runs over to take the corner as well. He plays the ball to the edge of the box for Mathieu Debuchy, but his low volley is blocked on its way through the area.
Cabaye's delivery is headed straight out of play for a Newcastle corner.
Ben Arfa tries to beat his man again and fails, but this time he picks up a free-kick, much to the annoyance of the Sunderland fans.
The Newcastle defence is all over the place at the moment. Sunderland's physical forwards are causing plenty of problems.
The ball sits up nicely for Fletcher on the edge of the Newcastle area and the forward fires a low volley towards the bottom corner, but Krul parries it. Dummett tries to collect, only to dwell on the ball. Altidore steals possession back, but runs it out of play.
The free-kick may well have been from 35 yards out, but Cabaye tries his luck anyway, curling a shot towards the bottom corner which Westwood deals with.
Ben Arfa has Cattermole all over him and the Sunderland man gives away a free-kick in a deep, central position.
Dossena plays in a good cross from the left and Fletcher manages to connect with it, but he jumped too early and his header is glanced well wide of the target.
Newcastle have another shot, but once again it is from range, with Hatem Ben Arfa blazing well over this time.
Sunderland take the free-kick quickly but lose possession almost immediately.
Fouls are spoiling the tempo of this match at the moments and Sunderland win another as Jack Colback is pushed over by Tiote.
The visitors finally get some possession in Sunderland's half, but after patient build-up Cabaye hammers the ball well over from 30 yards out.
Newcastle find themselves knocking the ball around in defence, but Sunderland's intensity and pressuring is outstanding, as Tiote is forced to clear the ball straight to Lee Cattermole.
Tempers flaring already at the Stadium of Light. Yohan Cabaye catches Fletcher late in the centre circle and the goal-scorer reacts badly, squaring up to the Frenchman. The Scot gets booked.
Yellow Card Steven Fletcher
Assist Adam Johnson
Goal Steven Fletcher
GOAL!!! Sunderland take the lead in the fifth minute! Adam Johnson takes a short corner and immediately gets the ball back from Larsson. The winger gets to the byline and crosses with his right foot, allowing Fletcher to knock a header in at the far post. What a start!
Good play by Seb Larsson as he surges past Davide Santon on the right and crosses powerfully, but Mike Williamson gets it away just before Altidore can connect with it.
Noisy start from the home fans, but the match itself is still relatively calm. With Altidore and Fletcher in attack today, the hosts could be playing a direct game today.
Here we go! Sunderland get the match started, kicking from left to right.
Meanwhile, there is a full Premier League debut for Paul Dummett in the heart of the Newcastle defence.
Only two of Sunderland's 14 summer signings appear in Gus Poyet's starting line-up today; Jozy Altidore and Andrea Dossena.
The hosts' form coming into this match has been rather terrible. From their last 12 league matches they have lost nine and drawn three.
Sunderland have only been victorious in one of their previous 11 Tyne-Wear derbies in the Premier League having lost five and drawn five.
