Martin Atkinson brings the contest to an end and it finishes all square. Newcastle, despite holding the lead for so long, will probably be the happier of the two teams after playing the majority of the contest with 10 men.

A cacophonous atmosphere is building here at the Stadium of Light. Sunderland need a goal but they don't look like finding one at the moment.
Scrappy, and lacking fluency is probably the best way to describe this game. Right now that suits Newcastle just fine.

The referee blows for Half-Time. Newcastle will be delighted to have the lead through Yohan Cabaye's early opener but will need to maintain their superb defensive display if they are to hold on for the win. Sunderland have struggled to create any true goal-scoring opportunities and Martin O'Neill may need to change things if that trend continues in the second half.

Cabaye's free-kick is his first poor one of the game as it sails over the crossbar.
Newcastle, despite being a man down, are still controlling the game and have a free-kick on the edge of the area after Johnson clipped Davide Santon.
