Live Commentary

  • Anyway, that'll be all from me, Sam Wells, thanks for reading and tune in to for reaction to this game. Until next time, farewell!
  • Meanwhile, Bolton will be chuffed with both the performance and the result. After a defensively solid first half, they pushed on in the second and, thanks to stellar showings from Sordell and Eagles in particular, they capitalised on possession in a way the Black Cats were unable to. They're duly rewarded with a 4th round draw at home to Everton; something to savour for a Bolton team not doing particularly well in the Championship.
  • Sunderland will be bitterly disappointed with that result. With Fletcher out due to illness, they lacked a real cutting edge upfront as both Wickham and Campbell failed to impress in his lone striker berth. Still, the home side had the better of the first half and will be disappointed they weren't able to capitalise, eventually conceding two soft goals that they could, and perhaps should, have done better with. Anyway, they fall at the first FA Cup hurdle, exacerbating a hitherto disappointing season for O'Neill's side.
  • 90' + 2'
The free-kick is blasted forward and, perhaps inevitably, rolls out for a goal-kick. And, with that, the referee blows for full-time, the game finishing 2-0 to the away side!
  • 90' + 1'
Into the first minute of the three allotted minutes of injury time and Sunderland have a free-kick just inside Bolton's half after Campbell was fouled.
  • 90'
Davies then wins a free-kick from Kilgallon; intelligent play from the striker as the Trotters' look to see out the ninety minutes.
  • 89'
After a spell of Bolton possession, substitute Kevin Davies gives the ball away and Sunderland come forward again.
  • 86'
Another free-kick by Larsson is punched away impressively by Lonergan; the Bolton goalkeeper hasn't put a foot wrong tonight. The following cross is then headed over by Kilgallon.
  • 85'
The free-kick eventually comes to nothing as time appears to be swiftly running out on this Sunderland side's FA Cup campaign.
  • 84'
    SubstitutionMarvin Sordell Kevin Davies
  • 84'
Sessegnon is tripped by Mears and Sunderland have a free-kick just outside the Bolton area.
  • 82'
A fantastic ball from Eagles and a decent run from Lee forces Bardsley to put it for a Bolton corner; Eagles has been excellent in the second half.
  • 80'
McClean crosses to the far post but can't find anyone after the ball breaks to him following a powerful run from Kilgallon. It's hard to see the Premier League outfit scoring tonight.
  • 77'
Sunderland look fairly dejected here; they don't seem to be able to break down the Trotters as Bardsley fires disappointingly wide with a hopeful effort.
  • 75'
    SubstitutionJack Colback Lee Cattermole
  • 75'
Craig Gardner puts an effort wide as Sunderland still look to be reeling from that shock second. Incidentally, Holden has come on for his first appearance in almost two years for Bolton.
  • 74'
    SubstitutionJoshua Vela Stuart Holden
  • 73'
    Assist Tyrone Mears
  • 73'
    Goal Marvin Sordell
And Bolton have scored a second! A lovely pass from Eagles to Mears led to an equally delightful cross from the right-back. He found Sordell in the box and, after a poor touch initially, the team GB striker found the back of the net to grab an unlikely two-goal lead for the Championship side!
  • 70'
    SubstitutionConnor Wickham Fraizer Campbell
  • 70'
    SubstitutionAdam Johnson Sebastian Larsson
  • 70'
Connor Wickham and Adam Johnson come off for Frazier Campbell and Sebastian Larsson as the Black Cats look desperately to grab a goal with twenty minutes remaining.
  • 69'
    SubstitutionBenik Afobe Chung-Yong Lee
  • 68'
Frazier Campbell looks to be ready for action as Johnson blazes a speculative effort wide.
  • 65'
No-one would have predicted that after the first half but, on the balance of this second half, they have deserved it. And they press again with Sunderland looking on the ropes here!
  • 63'
    Penalty Goal Marvin Sordell
Sordell duly smashes it home and Bolton are 1-0 up!
  • 62'
And Bolton have a penalty! Colback tripped Pratley after an excellent run from the midfielder, Sordell steps up to take the penalty.
  • 61'
A lovely pass from Spearing to Alonso leads to a dangerous delivery from the left back but no-one is there to capitalise. Bolton's pressure is really building here; Sunderland haven't threatened since that Gardner free-kick.
  • 59'
Pratley does very well to win the pressure for the Trotters and it eventually comes to Alonso, who stoops low and wins a free-kick after a raised boot from a Sunderland man.
  • 57'
Bolton are really coming into this game now, Sordell is increasingly causing the Black Cats' defence problems.
  • 55'
Sordell, running at the defence, is brought down by Bramble just outside the area but the referee once again fails to give anything.
  • 53'
A chance for Bolton! A rare opening falls to Sordell; the striker looked quite clearly offside but the linesman failed to give it. Sordell attempted to place it past Mignolet but the goalkeeper managed to parry wide.
  • 52'
Alonso feels he should have a free-kick after ballooning his effort over the crossbar; Gardner leaned into him slightly but he still should have done better.
  • 51'
An excellent winding run from Afobe as he beats two men but he spurns his final chance once again.
  • 50'
The second-half looks to have settled back into that first-half pattern; a fairly lifeless game with the Black Cats enjoying the better of the possession.
  • 48'
Gardner fires another signature free-kick just wide! Another sprawling effort from the midfielder sails past the helpless Lonergan; he's getting closer and closer.
  • 47'
Good work from McClean down the left but Mears blocks it. The left winger receives it once more and tries to find Sessegnon but the ball goes awry.
  • 46'
The action has restarted with Sunderland getting us underway!
  • As the teams come out for the second half, let's hope for some more excitement in the oncoming 45 minutes!
  • The Wanderers', meanwhile, will be happy with their having contained Sunderland - they have looked fairly strong defensively with Andrew Lonergan, in particular, impressive in goal. The Championship outfit, however, have barely troubled his opposite number in Sunderland's goal - surely they'll look to come out and play more in the second half? All will be revealed in 15 minutes.
  • After a fairly dismal opening, the tie livened up after the first fifteen minutes however as Sunderland asserted themselves on proceedings more and more as the half progressed. Gardner, Johnson, Bramble and Wickham were all guilty of spurning chances; the Premiership outfit will have to be more clinical in the second hand if they want to avoid an upset.
  • 45' + 1'
After a marauding run from Eagles, he finds Afobe but the young loanee wastes possession with a fairly dismal ball. And that's the last of the half as the referee blows for half time.
  • 44'
Lonergan produces another extremely smart save as, following a cross from McClean, Wickham sends a header goalwards. The Trotters' goalkeeper is equal to it, however, and the Black Cats have another corner.
  • 43'
Bolton earn a corner but Eagles' delivery is routinely cleared by Sunderland at the near post.
  • 41'
The corner eventually comes to Sessegnon, who finds Bramble with an excellent cross. The centre-back swivels on the ball impressively but can only shoot tamely wide on his weaker foot.
  • 40'
Gardner leaves the free-kick to Johnson and the winger fires an excellent effort goalwards! Lonergan produces a rasping save though and manages to tip it wide for a corner.
  • 39'
Sunderland have a free-kick just outside the area after Bolton's mounting frustration manifests itself through a silly foul by the Trotters' defence.
  • 38'
Titus Bramble goes right through Marvin Sordell but, somehow, the referee fails to give a foul; Dougie Freedman is understandably livid.
  • 36'
Bolton have a rare foray forward but, after decent interplay, Eagles curls wide from the edge of the area. That was never really troubling Mignolet in Sunderland's goal.
  • 35'
Sessengon makes another good run but he possibly chooses the wrong option, passing to Vaughan, who duly fires wide from distance.
  • 33'
Gardner again blasts a long-range free-kick that finds its way past the wall; an excellent effort that required a decent save from Lonergan.
  • 32'
The former Villa man does indeed fire at goal but the shot is deflected behind. Lonergan claims the ensuing corner with relative ease and the danger is averted.
  • 31'
Sunderland have a free-kick 30 yards out and Gardner looks like he's prepared to fire at goal.
  • 29'
A big let-off for Bolton as, after Lonergan and Ricketts combined to sloppily lose possession in their own half, Johnson almost capitalised but couldn't find a man with a searching cross.
  • 27'
McClean whips in a corner after his cross is deflected behind but Lonergan deals with it well, punching clear from his own six yard box.
  • 25'
Sessegnon fires just wide after a marauding run; he should have done better but he looks like the main source of creativity for the home side tonight.
  • 24'
The Black Cats are asserting themselves on the game more and more as, after decent play from the home side, a Bardsley cross is routinely cleared by the Trotters' defence.
  • 22'
Another opportunity goes begging as Johnson whips in a dangerous delivery from the ensuing corner; no-one can get on the end of it though and it remains goalless.
  • 21'
After a McClean cross was cleared by a stooping Zat Knight, Adam Johnson forces the first save of the match, with Lonergan tipping over after the winger fired at goal from the edge of the area.
  • 20'
Sunderland are beginning to raise the tempo slightly here, McClean running down the left flank and whipping the ball in. No-one can get on the end of it though and it goes out harmlessly for a goal kick.
  • 19'
Gardner comes the closest that anyone has come from that free-kick as, after a knockdown from a Sunderland man, he fires over from the edge of the area.
  • 18'
Bolton left-back Alonso brings down Sessegnon and Johnson looks to whip in a free-kick in a dangerous position on the right flank.
  • 16'
Sunderland finally show something and, surprise surprise, it's that man Sessegnon. The tricky midfielder runs at Mears and gets the better of him, his cross is blocked however and rolls harmlessly wide.
  • 15'
There's still yet to be a shot here but the Trotters are having slightly more of the ball at the moment. The game remains very flat though and the home crowd are growing restless.
  • 13'
A long ball up to Wickham is headed down for Sessengon but it doesn't quite fall right for the diminutive midfielder and the chance gets away from the Black Cats.
  • 11'
A really lifeless start, devoid of any real chances or opportunities. Strikingly similar to the original tie between these sides, actually. Bolton have a corner here though.
  • 9'
After decent play from Adam Johnson on the right flank, he tries to find Bardsley in the area but to no avail as the right-back fouls Alonso to give Bolton a free kick in their own area.
  • 8'
Sunderland's attack also comes to nothing as a ball up to Wickham, pulling out onto the flanks, goes awry and Bolton are awarded a goal kick.
  • 7'
We're yet to have a real chance here as Sam Rickett punts a hopeful ball forward; nothing comes of it and Sunderland look to build from the back.
  • 5'
A fairly quiet opening to proceedings here as Zat Knight heads away a tame cross from Sunderland.
  • 3'
First corner of the game goes Sunderland's way but Lonergan claims it easily enough and danger is averted.
  • 2'
Bolton win a free-kick on the right through Afobe but nothing comes of it.
  • 1'
    And the game gets underway!
  • The teams are out of the tunnel in freezing conditions at the Stadium of Light; just a couple of minutes before kick-off now!
  • Bolton, meanwhile, make wholesale changes from the side that drew 1-1 with Millwall on Saturday as Adam Bogdan, Tim Ream, Chung-Yong Lee, Keith Andrews, Kevin Davies and David N'Gog depart, with Andy Lonergan, Tyrone Mears, Josh Vela, Darren Pratley, Benik Afobe and Marvin Sordell coming in to replace them.
  • Martin O'Neill's side make a few changes from the team that comprehensively beat West Ham 3-0 on Saturday - three to be exact; John O'Shea, Sebastian Larsson and Steven Fletcher are all rested, as Phil Bardsley, Matthew Kilgallon and Connor Wickham are all afforded fairly rare starts.
  • Bolton: Lonergan; Mears, Knight, Ricketts, Alonso; Vela, Spearing, Pratley, Eagles; Afobe, Sordell
  • Sunderland: Mignolet; Bardsley, Bramble, Kilgallon, Colback; Johnson, Gardner, Vaughan, McClean; Sessegnon; Wickham.
  • And here are the line-ups for today's action...
  • It is likely to be a close encounter today with both sides having a point to prove after the initial clash ten days ago. Depending on whose perspective you adopt, it was either an impressive comeback from the Black Cats or an act of complacency from the Trotters that forced this replay. Either way, the replay was forced as, after a two goal lead, courtesy of goals from Lee Chung-Yong and Marvin Sordell, a goal apiece from Connor Wickham and Craig Gardner was enough to spare the Premier League outfit's blushes. Let's hope for a similarly enthralling tie this evening!
  • Good evening and welcome to's live coverage of today's FA Cup Third Round replay between Sunderland and Bolton Wanderers, I'm Sam Wells and I'll be guiding you through today's proceedings.
