Had a decent game until he left the field with a suspected broken nose in the second half.
Had a good game. His positional sense was excellent and was always aware of Villa’s pace up-front. Good distribution from the back.
Had to leave the field injured in the first half. Was solid for the time he was on the pitch and used the ball well. Had a good aerial battle with Emile Heskey.
Played well against a potent Villa attack. Helped snuff out Darren Bent in the first half. Was excellent in the air and could have scored with headed effort from Seb Larrson’s corner.
Didn’t waste possession and tried to get forward and support Wickham and Bendtner whenever he could. Strong in the tackle as well.
Great play to get Wickham behind the Villa defence with quick feet and accurate passing. Was at the heart of everything good the Black Cats did going forward. Good finish for goal.

Not his best game for Sunderland. Lost the ball on numerous occasions, his usual pinpoint passing someway off. Failed to impose himself on the game.
Raided forward whenever he could and had a good match-up against N’Zogbia where he won some battles but lost others against the former Wigan man.
Had an excellent game and gave the Villa defence all sorts of problems. Took his goal extremely well after being played in by Sessegnon. Could have had more goals if he had taken all of his chances.
Put himself about and used his skill to great effect. Gave as good as he got in a physical tussle with Richard Dunne and James Collins.
Could do nothing with Wickham’s equaliser. Good save to deny Larsson in the second half.

Gave Bendtner as good as he got especially in the air. Made good decisions when he needed to. Tackled well.
Struggled with Sessegnon all game. Couldn’t cope with the midfielder's trickery. Should have done better job marking him before he slid Wickham in.
After a poor game last week, he looked much more of his usual self as he used his pace and skill to great effect. He had the Sunderland defence in trouble on more than one occasion.
Great strike to give Villa the lead in the first half. Led by example didn’t give the ball away. Tackled well in the centre of midfield. Great free-kick for Collins goal.

Given a tough time by the Sunderland supporters all afternoon following his controversial move to Villa in January from the Black Cats. Missed a glorious opportunity to put Villa in the lead. Poor game.
Probably the best player on the pitch. He troubled Sunderland all afternoon, his use of the ball was excellent and he was crucial in Petrov’s goal. Despite not troubling the score-sheet, his presence was vital
