Live Commentary

  • That's it from me, Greg Taylor. Thanks for joining us, let's hope for a better game for these two sides come Saturday.
  • That's it, 0-0. This result won't suit either side but Malky Mackay will be the happier of the two managers. His side have recovered from losing to Arsenal and have a point on the road. Mark Hughes and Stoke really do look like they're struggling. Tonight they went back to their roots and played the long ball but that didn't work either. They both remain just above the relegation zone.
  • 90' + 4'
Stoke have a throw in, but there's no Delap to launch it half way across the pitch. Have Cardiff done enough to secure a point?
  • 90' + 2'
John fires a low effort at goal and Begovic is forced into action. He tips it round the post and Cardiff have a corner. It materialises to nothing as Stoke bring it away.
  • 90'
Mutch is flagged offside and Stoke have a free kick. Malky Mackay will probably happily take the point away from home. Mark Hughes however will not be happy.
  • 88'
Supporters leaving in droves. I don't blame them. It's been a dreadful game.
  • 87'
    Yellow Card Ben Turner
  • 87'
Stoke have a free kick, Charlie Adam hits it on target but Marshall pushes it away. It falls to Ireland but blasts well over.
  • 85'
Adam turns in the middle and makes space for himself to shoot, he fires it from 25 yards out but he slices it and it goes well wide of Marshall's right hand post.
  • 83'
Charlie Adam again gets away with another cheeky bit of play. As he competes for a header he pulls the shirt of Mutch. The referee misses it and Cardiff have a throw in.
  • 81'
CLOSE! Ireland gets into the box and receives the ball after a Crouch knock down, he plays it across the six yard box but neither Crouch nor Arnautovic can get a touch and Cardiff can come away with it.
  • 79'
Stoke really have been poor tonight. Even their work rate has been poor, Cardiff get another throw in but no Stoke players mark their man quick enough. and Cardiff find a cross only for Begovic to claim it and kick it long.
  • 77'
    Substitution Fraizer Campbell Peter Odemwingie
Fraizer Campbell makes way for Peter Odemwingie. Never scored against Stoke the Nigerian, can he break his duck against them tonight?
  • 75'
Charlie Adam finds himself in space through the middle but hesitates, Caulker gets a crucial touch to divert away the danger but it rolls out to Cameron who fires high and wide.
  • 73'
You can see why Stoke have failed to score in six of their 13 games this season. They just lack that quality to play they way Mark Hughes wants. Perhaps Pulis did get the best out of the players he had.
  • 71'
God play again by Assaidi down the left, he cuts inside and has a chance to shoot but dithers and lays it off to Adam who shoots well over.
  • 69'
CHANCE! Great cross down the left from Assaidi, it falls to Crouch but he heads it over the ba. Great chance for the big front man there. Cardiff immediately break and Mutch has a chance in the Stoke box but fluffs his lines and shoots wide.
  • 67'
PENALTY SHOUT! Stoke want a penalty as Crouch and Turner tussle in the area but again the decision goes in favour of the defender Cardiff have a free kick.
  • 66'
Cardiff are coming into this game now and look the most likely to find a goal. Mid way through the second half and still neither side has created a real chance.
  • 65'
    Substitution Glenn Whelan Stephen Ireland
Time to freshen things up. Stephen Ireland replaces Glenn Whelan. Can the former City man help conjure up a goal for the Potters?
  • 63'
CHANCE! John throws the ball into action from the left and Whittingham lets the ball run onto his left foot inside the box but he can't get his volleyed effort on target, when he had all the time in the world to shoot.
  • 60'
    Yellow Card Peter Crouch
  • 60'
    Yellow Card Fraizer Campbell
  • 60'
Charlie Adam is a lucky boy there. Already on a yellow card and he gets away with another late challenge. He kicked the ball away in the first half whilst on a yellow, he needs to be careful here.
  • 58'
Cardiff have a free kick after Whittingham was fouled by Shawcross. It's about 30 yards out. A few handbags in the wall and Crouch is given a little talking to. Replays show Crouch brushed Campbell who appeared to be hit by a train. He is ok though. Whittingham's effort is on target but Begovic is equal to it.
  • 56'
Big shout for a penalty for Cardiff there. Campbell gets the wrong side of Wilson and is brought down in the box, but the referee dismisses it. The assistant referee got an earful form Campbell. I'd say it was the right decision.
  • 54'
Long ball after long ball. In Peter Crouch's defence, he would probably rather it on the floor. Mark Hughes looks very irritated with his players.
  • 52'
Still cagey and lacking in quality, but Stoke are definitely the side in the ascendency. Just noticed the Stoke players have removed their moustaches. Thank heavens, the Souness look never really suited Crouch.
  • 50'
STAT! As a result of being dropped to the bench this evening Jonathan Walters' run of 122 consecutive starts in the Premier League is broken. He must be heartbroken.
  • 49'
The corner is taken by Whittingham again but Campbell mistimes his jump and the ball runs out for a throw in to Stoke.
  • 48'
Stoke have made a change, Marc Muniesa replaces the injured Erik Peters. The game begins very much like the first half, scrappy and disjointed, with a host of misplaced passes already. Cardiff have a corner.
  • 46'
    Substitution Erik Pieters Muniesa
  • 46'
Cardiff get us underway in the second half.
  • The players are back out onto the pitch, we'll begin again very shortly.
  • Statistically very even half. Both sides managed seven shots , where Stoke had two on target compared to Cardiff's one. The Potters have have had more possession, 56 to 44 per cent.
  • So the referee brings an end to the first half. Not the greatest advert for Premiership football but neither manager will be too disappointed. Both their sides are still in it, and you feel whoever scores first will win the game.
  • 45' + 1'
I hear Suarez has another hat trick for Liverpool against Norwich. He'd probably have five if he was playing here tonight. The players counting down the clock, throw in to Stoke.
  • 45'
OFFSIDE GOAL! Stoke think they've scored, Whelan gets down the right, his cross bounces around the 6 yard area and falls to Assaidi who pokes it in but he's flagged offside and it won't count. Still 0-0.
  • 43'
Mark Hughes will be quietly confident tonight knowing his sides home form has been pretty decent so far this season. They have only conceded three goals in six home league games so far. Only Manchester City and Southampton (two goals conceded) have a better defensive home record.
  • 41'
Charlie Adam tries to catch Marshall off guard. He sees the Cardiff keeper a few yards off his line and tries to fire in a kick shot near post from 30 yards out. Marshall sees it and quickly scampers across to get down and stop the ball.
  • 39'
Have to say this feels more 'Championship' than 'Premiership' at the moment. Neither side has been able to take the game by the scruff of the neck and the result is a lot of play in midfield with little end product. Cardiff have a corner.
  • 37'
The Bluebirds really are that tonight, Wearing their blue away strip. Could be worse, they could be about to be re-named Cardiff Tigers.
  • 35'
It's too near Begovic who launches the ball down field for the counter. It falls nicely to Arnautovic but Caulker nicks it off him and plays it wide.
  • 34'
    Yellow Card Charlie Adam
  • 33'
Campbell is fouled again, this time by Charlie Adam who receives a yellow card. Whittingham again stands over the free kick, about to deliver.
  • 30'
Mix up at the back between Marshall and Theophile-Catherine, which almost lets Crouch in. The ball runs free and trickles toward goal before Theophile-Catherine leathers it away.
  • 28'
Charlie Adam puts in a great cross toward Peter Crouch who feels he is bundled over by a challenge from caulker. The referee waves play on much to Crouch's horror.
  • 26'
Arnautovic is the Potters' most dangerous player so far. When he receives the ball on the left he is always trying to make something happen. Cardiff have a throw in on the nearside near the half way line. That sums up the game so far.
  • 24'
Whittingham gets forward and fires a low effort at goal but it goes wide via a deflection on its way out and Cardiff will have a corner. It's crossed to the back post and the danger is cleared.
  • 22'
Still no clear cut chance created by either side so far. It's no surprise both sides are near the bottom of the table on the showing so far. Stoke play another long ball up to Crouch but it goes out for a goal kick.
  • 20'
CHANCE! Shawcross gets up in the penalty area and heads Adam's cross at goal but his effort goes wide. He should have done better with that given the amount of time he had.
  • 18'
Stoke are unbeaten in their last six games against Cardiff, winning four of the matches. Will that continue tonight?
  • 16'
Whittingham plays in Mutch who gets in a great cross, Shawcross is there to head it clear but Cardiff are growing into the game here.
  • 14'
Good play by Nzonzi who lays it off to Whelan, he shoots first time and it's deflected out or a corner. It's whipped in but Caulker out jumps Shawcross and heads it away.
  • 12'
Foul by Wilson on Campbell. This is where Cardiff are very dangerous. Whittingham's wand of a left foot will take it but it's too close to Begovic and Stoke have possession.
  • 10'
Neither side has been able to string many passes together yet. Mackay is out to his technical area barking orders at his side to play it on the floor. They keep playing long balls but I can't see them getting much joy out of that tonight.
  • 8'
Lively start to the game here, end to end stuff. A great atmosphere in here too, the Britannia is absolutely rocking.
  • 6'
Stoke get a free kick from 25 yards out after Crouch is fouled by Turner. Charlie Adam immediately grabs the ball and is standing over it. Can he produce a goal? No, straight into the wall.
  • 4'
Cardiff have a corner after a long range shot is deflected. It's swung into the near post but Turner heads wide. Stoke have already played five long balls, perhaps Hughes has told his side to play like they know how.
  • 2'
Stoke try and get in behind early, a long ball floated into the box but Crouch is flagged offside and Cardiff have a free kick.
  • 1'
Stoke kick off and we're underway at the Britannia Stadium.
  • The players are out on the pitch so we'll be underway very shortly.
  • The return from injury of summer signing Andreas Cornelius, Danish Superliga top scorer last term, is a welcome one. Starting on the bench tonight, maybe he can help fire Cardiff up the table. Mr. Mackay will certainly hope so.
  • Mackay has replaced both Kim Bo-Kyung and Andrew Taylor and recalled Declan John and Andreas Gunnarsson to replace them.
  • Both managers have made two changes for tonight's game. For Stoke Marko Arnautovic returns from injury and replaces Jonathan Walters while Marc Wilson also comes into the side at the expense of Marco Muniesa.
  • CARDIFF SUBS: Lewis, Connolly, Hudson, Cornelius, Odemwingie, Kim, Noone.
  • CARDIFF STARTING XI: Marshall, Theophile-Catherine, Caulker, Turner, John, Whittingham, Medel, Gunnarsson, Mutch, Cowie, Campbell.
  • STOKE SUBS: Sorensen, Muniesa, Pennant, Palacios, Jones, Walters, Ireland.
  • STOKE STARTING XI: Begovic, Cameron, Shawcross, Wilson, Pieters, Arnautovic, Nzonzi, Whelan, Adam, Assaidi, Crouch.
  • So, let's see who they've selected for tonight's encounter, we'll start with the home side.
  • For Malky Mackay and Cardiff, two home games against Manchester United and Arsenal yielded just one point, but more concerning is there overall form. Just one win in seven matches. Both managers know how important it is to beat the teams around you, especially with the Christmas season about to begin, they'll want as many points on the board before the new year as possible.
  • Worryingly for the Potters they have won just once in the Premier League since August, something Hughes will be desperate to change tonight. Former boss Tony Pulis has already managed one win with Crystal Palace and he's only been there two games. I wonder if Stoke fans would rather be happy with mid table safety in the Premiership or their new passing style in the Championship? We'll find out in May.
  • Mark Hughes will be looking for a response from his players tonight after they were hammered 4-0 at the weekend away to Everton. Martinez's side were brilliant, but the manner of the defeat will be worrying for Hughes too – only three times in their six Premier League seasons have Stoke been beaten more heavily (5-0 at both Bolton and Manchester United and 7-0 at Chelsea).
  • Good evening and welcome to the LIVE Text Commentary of Stoke City v Cardiff City at the Britannia Stadium. I'm Greg Taylor and I'll be guiding you through tonight's game between the sides placed 16th and 17th in the league table.
