Stoke City - Bolton Preview: The Trotters must win to stand a chance of Premier League survival

Owen Coyle's men visit the Britannia knowing that even victory might not be enough to save them from relegation as the Potters aim to match their record top-flight points tally

  PROBABLE LINEUPS

STOKE CITY

Sorensen
Wilkinson, Shawcross, Huth, Shotton
Pennant, Whelan, Palacios, Etherington
Crouch, Walters

BOLTON WANDERERS

Bogdan
Ricketts, Knight, Ream, Boyata

Stoke City could be without defender Marc Wilson after he failed to complete 90 minutes against QPR due to a back problem.

However, Jermaine Pennant and Andy Wilkinson are both expected to return to the squad after recovering from hamstring injuries.

STAYING ALIVE?
2/1 Bolton are 2/1 with Paddy Power to avoid relegation this season.

For Bolton, David Wheater will now be missing for nine months after he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligaments last weekend but manager Owen Coyle is confident that Darren Pratley, Nigel Reo-Coker and Mark Davies will be fit for their trip to the Britannia.

Coyle also confirmed that Martin Petrov will be ready to play despite limping out of the 2-2 draw with West Brom.

  DID YOU KNOW?
  • Stoke can equal their record points tally in the Premier League with victory over Bolton at the Britannia (47).

  • The Potters have failed to hit the target in more matches than any other team (4).

  • Stoke have scored 23 goals at home this season, only four teams have managed less than this.

  • However, they have lost just four matches at the Britannia and this is bettered only by Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham and Newcastle.

  • Since losing 5-0 to Stoke in their 2011 FA cup semi-final, Bolton have lost 27 of their last 43 league games.

  • Bolton have more wins on the road (6) than at home (4) and more points away (19) than at the Reebok (16)

  • Conceding 75 goals gives Bolton the third worst defensive record in the league, better only than already relegated pair Wolves and Blackburn.

Players to watch

P. Crouch

Position: Attacker

Games: 33

With a place in the Euro 2012 England squad well up for grabs, Crouch will be desperate to end his season with a bang and seal his place on the plane.

The striker has reached double figures in the league which puts him amongst the top English scorers in the division and goals against Bolton could tip the balance for Crouch.

M. Petrov

Position: Midfielder

Games: 0

  • 0

The Bulgarian winger has been pivotal in the Trotters' recent victories and he will once again be vital as they head to Stoke in need of goals.

Against a powerful Stoke backline Petrov will fancy his chances of using his pace to help Bolton to three of their most important points.

Editor's Prediction

It’s all to play for at the Britannia for Bolton and anything less than a win will see them relegated.

And, whilst Stoke will want to end a long season on a high and match their record points tally, Bolton’s motivation is greater and could see them edge it.
