FULL-TIME. STOKE CITY 2-1 ASTON VILLA. Great end to the game at the Britannia Stadium. Downing put the visitors ahead with a great diving header at the far post. Stoke then equalised with 10 minutes to go thanks to a Kenwyne Jones header following good work from Fuller and Etherington before Robert Huth grabbed a late winner, steering home Etherington's shot. Stoke are off the mark for the season and are up to 18th place. Thanks for joining me tonight.

GOAL!! STOKE HAVE DONE IT!! IT'S ROBERT HUTH!! Pennant's floats a right-footed free-kick into the area from the right. The ball breaks to Etherington and his drilled shot along the ground is helped on its way by Huth and flies past Friedel in the Villa goal. What a finish to the game! What a moment for Tony Pulis!

Luke Young launches the ball downfield looking for the head of Heskey, but Shawcross does enough to put the big man off and the ball bounces through to Sorensen in the Stoke goal.

    Yellow Card Stilian Petrov
  • 90'
Three minutes of added time at the Britannia as Whelan blazes a right-footed free-kick into row Z.
  • 89'
Whelan fires wide after a neat one-two with Fuller on the edge of the area. Meanwhile, Heskey has come on in the place of Agbonlahor up front for Aston Villa.
  • 88'
GREAT TRICKERY FROM FULLER! The substitute jinks past a couple of defenders just inside the Villa area after receiving a pass from Whelan, who has just replaced Delap, and manages to get a left-footed snapshot away to goal, but Friedel makes himself big and palms the ball wide of the post for a corner, which comes to nothing.
  • 87'
    Substitution Gabriel Agbonlahor Emile Heskey
  • 87'
    Substitution Rory Delap Glenn Whelan
  • 86'
GREAT BLOCK FROM DANNY COLLINS!! Agbonlahor twists and turns just inside the area but can't find space to have a shot at goal. He lays the ball off to Reo-Coker on the edge of the area but the midfielder's weak shot lacks conviction and Collins is there to put in a magnificent block to divert the ball wide of the goal.
  • 84'
Albrighton bursts forward down the left and looks to keep the ball in play close to the byline. He wraps his foot around Huth but can't quite get to the ball to keep it in play.
  • 82'
Nick Price at the Britannia Stadium reports: The club record signing does the trick, but it's substitute Fuller who's pivotal to the goal. The substitutes have added dynamism to Stoke, and the noise level cranks up another notch as the home fans sense points on the board.
  • 80'
GOAL!! KENWYNE JONES GRABS THE EQUALISER! Whitehead and Etherington both have chances well blocked by the Villa defence. The ball then breaks to Fuller on the left side of the area, and he lays the ball off to his left to the onrushing Etherington who stands a great left-footed cross up towards the far post. Jones rises above Dunne and powers his header into the far corner past a stranded Friedel from 10 yards out. 1-1 and It's up for grabs now!

Pennant steals the ball off Downing in the Stoke right-back position. He then breaks down the right wing but doesn't have much support ahead of him. Downing then races back to put in a great challenge to slide the ball out of play. Great recovery from the goalscorer, further staking his claim for the man of the match award.
  • 76'
Nick Price at the Britannia Stadium reports: Aside from just the one occasion, Villa have coped with Delap's long throws with relative ease. Unsurprising given the size of their centre-backs, but Agbonlahor has helped out considerably with his height and leap when defended set-pieces.
  • 74'
Another Delap throw causing an element of chaos as the ball loops over Jones' head. It then falls to Etherington on the edge of the area but his shot is quickly closed down and Villa come away with the ball.
  • 72'
Ashley Young slips a nice little reverse pass into the path of Albrighton on the left side of the Stoke area. The youngster then takes a touch before firing the ball left footed at goal from a narrow angle. Sorensen parries the ball away just in front of him but Agbonlahor can't latch onto it as the Dane manages to gather the ball.
  • 70'
MISTAKE FROM SHAWCROSS! The defender looks to lay the ball off to Sorensen from the edge of his own area but his pass is far too weak. Reo-Coker looks to capitalise by closing the goalkeeper down quickly and the ball takes an almighty deflection before looping over the bar and onto the roof of the net. A huge let off for Stoke.
  • 68'
Nick Price at the Britannia Stadium reports: Comedy villain Jermaine Pennant comes on for fellow debutant Marc Wilson. The former Birmingham fan is understandably on the end of abuse the Villa support, but their cries of "City reject" seem rather silly given that the player went on to play in a Champions League final before impressing nobody in La Liga. Delap moves into the middle alongside Whitehead as the former Liverpool winger assumes his position down the right against the already booked Warnock.
  • 66'
The ball falls rather fortunately for Petrov on the edge of the area and he picks out Albrighton on the left. He swings a cross into the area looking for Agbonlahor but Danny Collins stands his ground and head the ball away.
  • 65'
    Substitution Marc Wilson Jermaine Pennant
  • 64'
Nick Price at the Britannia Stadium reports: Stoke fans finding their voice again after a mixed start to the second period. They're sensing a goal, and with Friedel having flapped at a Delap throw, their optimism seems well founded. Ricardo Fuller makes it a Caribbean combo up top alongside Kenwyne Jones after replacing Jon Walters.

Ricardo Fuller makes it a Caribbean combo up top alongside Kenwyne Jones after replacing Jon Walters.

There's the change. Ricardo Fuller comes on in the place of Jon Walters up front, and it looks as though Jermaine Pennant could be about to make his debut.
  • 61'
    Substitution Jonathan Walters Ricardo Fuller
  • 60'
Etherington swings an inviting cross in from the left looking for the head of Jones. He can't quite reach it and Dunne steps in front of him to header the off for a corner. Stoke's corner eventually comes clear for Delap on the edge of the area but he slips as he goes to shoot and blazes the ball well over.
  • 58'
Stoke are lacking an attacking threat from open play at the moment. Fuller has completed his warm-up and looks set to come on in attack, possibly in the place of Jon Walters.
  • 56'
Lee Probert gives Agbonlahor a talking to after he tussles with Huth in the area while waiting for a Delap throw. The referee then walks backwards and inadvertently catches Collins' head as he walks past him! He apologises and play continues. Delap's throw causes problems in the area but Villa aren't put off by the big physical presence of Jones and manage to get the ball clear.
  • 54'
Dunne fizzes a free-kick from inside his own half over to Albrighton on the left wing. Villa keep the ball for a long time and Stoke are struggling to get close to them.
  • 52'
Downing, having one of his best games for a long time, is in possession deep inside his own half and coolly jinks past his man before laying the ball off to a team-mate. Good display so far from the former England man.
  • 50'
HEADER FROM JONES! Sorensen launches the ball downfield with a long clearance and Walters holds off his marker Dunne before catching a boot from the Irishman. From the resulting free-kick Etherington picks out Jones 10 yards out but his header is at Friedel and he manages to parry the ball away.
  • 48'
Nick Price at the Britannia Stadium reports: No changes, but Eidur Gudjohnsen ran over to the Boothen End in his warm-up to great applause. Speaking of support, Tony Pulis has just emerged from the tunnel to a standing ovation. Fantastic gesture on a terrible personal day for the manager, who wasn't expected to make an appearance tonight.
  • 46'
Stoke kick us off for the second half. No changes for either side at the break.
  • 45' + 3'
HALF-TIME. STOKE CITY 0-1 ASTON VILLA. Nick Price at the Britannia Stadium reports: Boos at half-time from the Stoke fans. Their side looked much the more threatening until Agbonlahor and Downing combined to open the scoring. Villa have controlled affairs since then, and were it not for a couple of smart Sorensen saves, and an astonishing Ashley Young miss, the margin would be wider one going into the break. Defeat here will mean that the Potters are rooted to the bottom of the table after four consecutive losses, surely assistant boss Kemp will be calling upon his bench if it carries on like this.
  • 45' + 2'
GREAT WORK FROM ASHLEY YOUNG! The playmaker jinks his way down the left, breaks into the area and from a narrow angle drills the ball low across the face of goal. There is nobody there to put the ball away from close range and it runs over the right wing. Albrighton can't keep the move alive and Stoke get it clear.
  • 45'
ANOTHER VILLA CHANCE! This time it's Albrighton who is the architect. He plays a great little cross to the far post from the right and picks out the onrushing Downing. The left winger has had a good game so far and tries his luck with a snapshot towards the near post, but Sorensen is there to fist the ball away before Stoke eventually get it clear. It's all Villa now.
  • 44'
    Yellow Card Danny Collins
  • 43'
COLLINS WITH A CHANCE!! Downing drills a low cross towards the near post and Wilson fails to clear the ball away. Walters can't manage to pick up the loose ball and it falls kindly to Collins in the area. He takes a touch before firing left-footed at goal but Sorensen is equal to it and beats the ball away.
  • 41'
FREE HEADER DIRECTED WIDE BY ASHLEY YOUNG!! Agbonlahor drifts out to the left wing and receives a pass from Albrighton. The striker then curls a wonderful right-footed cross towards the far post and Ashley Young makes a great run to latch onto it, but gets his effort all wrong and heads the ball a couple of yards wide of the right-hand post. That was a great chance to go 2-0 up.
  • 39'
Nick Price at the Britannia Stadium reports: After that penalty shout for the home side, Rory Delap has the opportunity to launch one of his trademark long throws into the box. Stoke fans are banging away in anticipation, but it's well dealt with and it's the visitors who are making the most noise now after taking the lead.
  • 37'
APPEALS FOR A PENALTY! Delap launches a throw-in into the area from the right and Kenwyne Jones' headed knockdown catches the arms of Collins. The ball almost rolls down the arm of Collins but there is little he can do about it. Lee Probert waves play on but Stoke have every right to feel hard done by.
  • 36'
Nick Price at the Britannia Stadium reports: That sequence of play deserved a goal. Villa step it up a notch or two, and Agbonlahor's delivery was perfect, but Downing's diving header was the best moment of this game so far. Superbly taken from quite some way out.
  • 35'
GOAL!! DOWNING WITH THE GOAL FOR ASTON VILLA!! Reo-Coker dwells on the ball on the edge of the area, holding off the challenge of Wilson, before laying the ball off to Agbonlahor on the right wing. The pacey forward whips in a left-footed cross to the far post and Downing gets in around the back behind his marker Huth to power a great header into the bottom right-hand corner. 1-0 to Villa!
  • 35'
    Assist Gabriel Agbonlahor
  • 35'
    Goal Stewart Downing
  • 34'
Good game so far. Kenwyne Jones looks Stoke's biggest threat going forward. He's lead the line well but his inconsistency has already come across in this match with a couple of miscues effort on goal.
  • 32'
Seems to be a bit of a problem with Ashley Young at the moment. The Villa star is called across by the referee to the halfway line and has a talk with Lee Probert along with Petrov, Albrighton and Shawcross. Probert has a brief chat with them before getting on with the play.
  • 30'
SHOT FROM DOWNING! The Villa winger receives the ball around 25 yards out from goal and looks set to shoot with his left foot. He then fools his marker with a clever drag back and switches onto his right foot before flashing a fierce strike just wide of Sorensen's left-hand post.
  • 28'
Downing lays the ball off to Warnock in the centre of the pitch, and he tries to play in Albrighton down the left wing. He can't latch onto it and even if he had reached it, he would have been snapped in two by Robert Huth's crunching slide tackle to fire the ball out of play.
  • 26'
TWO GOOD CHANCES FOR JONES!! The striker meets Etherington's inswinging corner the the left from 10 yards but can only direct his header wide of the Villa post. He then chests the ball down 25 yards out and stings the palms of Friedel with a left-footed half-volley. A couple of great opportunities, but he should have done much better with his header.
  • 24'
Stiliyan Petrov looks to race into the penalty area as Ashley Young gets set to take a corner and is brought down by Jon Walters. The Stoke forward doesn't do enough to concede a penalty and the ball was not in play in any case. Lee Probert has a word before Young's corner is comfortably dealt with by Sorensen.
  • 22'
Plenty of top names on the bench for Stoke tonight. Gudjohnsen, Pennant and Fuller are all options if manager for tonight Dave Kemp feels he needs to make a change.
  • 20'
Whitehead sells Sorensen short with a slow backpass from the edge of the area. Ashley Young bears down on goal in an attempt to steal the ball away from Sorensen, but the big Dane races out to clear the danger before giving his team-mate a glare.
  • 18'
Marc Albrighton switches over the left momentarily and picks up possession on the edge of the area. He nudges the ball to his right to set up a strike at goal and curls the ball right-footed towards the top right-hand corner, but the it flies just over the crossbar. Great effort from the youngster.
  • 17'
Half-chance for Downing. The former Middlesbrough man drifts inside from the left and receives a pass from Ashley Young. He takes a touch to move the ball onto his left foot but drills it straight into the arms of Sorensen from 25 yards out.
  • 16'
Nick Price at the Britannia Stadium reports: Fantastic noise, as ever, here at the Britannia. The Villa fans are playing their part in keeping the neighbours up too, and have given the first airing of "Houllier's Barmy Army".
  • 14'
    Yellow Card Stephen Warnock
  • 14'
Booking for Warnock. Kenwyne Jones receives a pass on the right and is caught on his ankle with a poorly-timed challenge by Warnock. Not intentional, but deserved a booking.
  • 12'
FRIEDEL TO THE RESCUE! Kenwyne Jones latches onto a wonderful through ball from Delap and outpaces his marker to have a one-on-one opportunity with only Friedel to beat. The big striker can't get a clean connection on his strike and fires the ball 18 yards out right-footed too close to Friedel and the American makes himself big and manages to divert the ball away.
  • 10'
Great work from Delap! The midfielder steals the ball down on the right wing and manages to escape his marker to swing a cross into the area. His right-footed delivery is great and looks set to find Kenwyne Jones at the back stick, but Collins is there to get in front of him and divert the ball away.
  • 9'
Stoke pile players forward and debutant Wilson lays the ball off to Huth on the edge of the area. The big German has got forward from the back but should probably have stayed there going by his effort on goal. You would expect the powerful defender to fire a fierce strike to really test the goalkeeper, but he saw his weak effort trickle into the arms of Friedel.
  • 7'
There we go... The first sign of the towel for Rory Delap to dry the ball before launching one of his trademark throw-ins into the box. The former Ireland international delivers the ball towards the edge of the area but James Collins manages to get to it first and head it away.
  • 5'
Reo-Coker finds Albrighton on the right wing and the impressive youngster looks to go by his man and swings a right-footed cross towards the near post. There are no Villa players attacking the ball and Faye is there to header the ball clear of danger.
  • 3'
Two early chances for Stoke! Walters breaks forward down the left and drills the ball across goal towards the onrushing Kenwyne Jones, but Collins is there to head clear. Jones then takes the ball down nicely around 30 yards out from goal and slips a great through ball into the path of Rory Delap just inside the penalty area. He only has the 'keeper to beat but is ruled offside. Early warning signs there for Villa.
  • 2'
Nick Price at the Britannia Stadium reports: No surprises about who draws the biggest cheers. Home debutants Kenwyne Jones, Marc Wilson, Jermaine Pennant and Eidur Gudjohnsen all get a big roar as their names are read out.
  • 2'
Nick Price at the Britannia Stadium reports: Mixed response from the home fans for substitute keeper Asmir Begovic. The Bosnian reportedly refused to play against Shrewsbury in the League Cup after Stoke rejected an approach for the player's services from Chelsea.
  • 1'
Aston Villa get us underway at the Britannia Stadium.
  • Nick Price at the Britannia Stadium reports: Both teams get a cracking reception from their respective supporters as they come out of the tunnel and exchange pre-match pleasantries. The Villa end is looking a bit sparse though as the late stragglers file in.
  • Stephen Ireland, recent recruit from Manchester City, doesn't make the starting XI, but has looked fairly sharp in the warm-up in what is turning into a typically nippy night in the Potteries.
  • Tuncay not in the squad at all tonight. Presumably Tony Pulis thinks that new signing Eidur Gudjohnsen and regular stalwart Ricardo Fuller are enough forward options from the bench, where former Arsenal, Birmingham and Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant also starts.
  • Here is the team news in full. Stoke City line up: Sorensen; Huth, Shawcross, Faye, Collins; Delap, Whitehead, Wilson, Etherington; Walters, Jones. Subs: Begovic, Higginbotham, Whelan, Gudjohnsen, Fuller, Pennant, Wilkinson. Aston Villa line up: Friedel; L Young, Collins, Dunne, Warnock; Albrighton, Reo-Coker, Petrov, Downing; Ashley Young; Agbonlahor. Subs: Guzan, Ireland, Heskey, Beye, Cuellar, Clark, Hogg.
  • Meanwhile, James Holton, a 24-year-old trainee solicitor from Chester, says: "2-1 Stoke. We've got to think positive. Jones and Fuller upfront with Gudjohnsen coming on to lift the crowd." Bad news for you James, Fuller only makes the bench, with Jon Walters starting in attack.
  • Nick Price has been gauging the reaction of supporters before kick-off. Matthew Taylor, a 41-year-old Villa fan from Birmingham, isn't entirely sold on the prospect of Gerard Houllier as their new manager, but still thinks they have enough to beat Stoke. "He'll be welcomed apprehensively by the Villa faithful when he eventually arrives," he said. "Stoke will come at us all guns blazing, which will suit Villa away from home, especially with the form of Ashley Young. I reckon he'll get the winner, but it'll be a tight game."
  • Both teams have had mixed starts to the season, but it’s the club’s managers who are the talk in the build up to the game. Gerard Houllier has succeeded Martin O’Neill but will not be in charge tonight as he still has obligations with the French Football Federation, which means Kevin MacDonald remains in the dugout tonight. Tony Pulis will also miss tonight’s match after his mother passed away, so assistant manager David Kemp will take charge.
