First choice for Romania, the 27-year-old didn't actually have much to do, despite Schalke being the better team for the majority of the game. A quiet game for the goalkeeper but performed his duties adeptly when called upon.
The rangy defender was solid throughout and, despite a scare with a late challenge on Szalai, looked extremely composed, dealing with any threats Schalke posed with consummate ease.
The left back was engaged in a battle with Farfan for the majority of the night and, though he didn't manage to get forward all that regularly, he acquitted himself valiantly in the defensive battle.
The 29-year-old Pole may have expected to face Boateng but came up against Szalai and dealt with the striker astutely, keeping him quiet for the majority of the night.
Playing on the left wing, the Romania international didn't have a great impact on the game, though he could have provided the telling contribution, had Piovaccari converted his excellent cross in the dying minutes.
Moved from his usual central midfield station to right back, the Romanian dealt admirably with the change in role, proving competent and assured, despite a testing opening 45 minutes.
Preferred to the less experienced Stanciu in the role just behind the striker, Chipciu tried to make things happen but didn't enjoy a particularly successful night as Steaua created little in the way of clear-cut chances.
Adrian Popa I
The right winger came more and more into the game as it progressed, particularly impressing in the last 10 minutes as Steaua went on a late search for a goal. Will be disappointed he couldn't make a more telling contribution.
One of a few players who came into the side after their domestic draw at the weekend and didn't impress in the centre of the park. Was extremely quiet and was duly replaced at half-time.
The Steaua captain, as is always the case, performed his defensive duties diligently and protected his defence adeptly. Was also a danger from set pieces and made the home side tick.
The on-loan striker is Steaua's top scorer this season and he showed why. Although his finishing was profligate, he was a constant outlet upfront and extremely lively. Was particularly unlucky with his overhead kick in the first half.
Deputised for the injured Hildebrand and the 25-year-old performed capably when called upon. Despite a couple of tetchy moments, particularly towards the end of the game, he made several decent saves.
The Brazilian centre-back came in for Joel Matip in the heart of the defence and, although not as impressive as his partner at the heart of the defence, never looked overly troubled by the opposing strikeforce.
The Schalke captain was his solid and dependable self at the back, as he marshalled a defence that, though occasionally tested by the Steaua attack, looked fairly comfortable throughout.
The Japan international was typically adventurous down the right and, although slightly quieter than usual, linked up well with Farfan on occasion and was solid defensively.
Replaced Draxler on the left wing and, although ordinarily a left back, impressed in that berth in the first half. Faded badly in the second, however, as he struggled to have any impact on the contest.
Held down the fort in central midfield alongside Jones but struggled when required to come out and play. Booked for a cynical challenge on Popa. Was, however, a potent threat aerially at set-pieces.
Was his usual tenacious self and protected the defence resolutely, often dropping in between the centre-backs and allowing the full backs to burst forward - a key part of Schalke's game.
Big things are expected from the 18-year-old German and, despite cementing his place in the Schalke starting 11 this season, the prodigy was quiet. Showed flashes of his ability with nice touches but didn't have any tangible impact.
Moved to left back after playing in centre midfield for their 3-3 draw against Frankfurt and performed well. Got forward regularly and did particularly sterling work in the first half, though he, like Fuchs, faded in the second.
The striker came in for Boateng up top and, though they were big boots to fill, he will be disappointed that he couldn't do a better job filling them. Had very little impact on the contest.
Having missed half of the group stages with a groin injury, the Peru international was back and looked intermittently dangerous. Was unlucky not to have an assist to his name after Fuchs' goal was ruled out and threatened on occasion.
