Southampton - Everton Preview: Toffees aim to continue top-four push against improving Saints

The Merseysiders travel to the south coast looking for a fourth win in six league games, while the hosts will hope to pull further clear of the relegation zone

Clyne, Yoshida, Hooiveld, Shaw
Schneiderlin, Cork
Puncheon, Ramirez, Rodriguez

Nevilla, Jagielka, Distin, Baines
Coleman, Osman, Fellaini, Pienaar
Jelavic, Anichebe

New Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino is without club captain Adam Lallana (knee) for Monday's clash.

The home side will also be missing Guilherme Do Prado (illness) and Jose Fonte (knee) for the visit of Everton.

David Moyes will make the journey to the south coast unable to call on midfield Darron Gibson (hip) and Kevin Mirallas (hamstring).

Defensive duo John Heitinga (muscle injury) and Tony Hibbert (calf) are also likely to be ruled out.

  • Southampton have conceded almost twice as many goals in away fixtures (26) as they have on home turf (14).
  • The last season that the Saints were in the top division - 2004/05 - Everton qualified for the Champions League.
  • Two of Southampton's strikers from that campaign are now team-mates once again in the Premier League: Peter Crouch and Kenwyne Jones, at Stoke City.
  • Everton have conceded exactly the same number of goals (26) than they had done after the same number of fixtures last term.
  • Last weekend's goalless draw with Swansea represented the first time in 20 matches that David Moyes' (pictured right) men managed to keep a clean sheet - since their last game against Swansea in September.

Players to watch

J. Puncheon

The winger netted the equaliser in the Saints' hard-fought comeback against Chelsea in midweek, and the goal was just reward to the hard work Puncheon has put in across the course of the season so far.

Supremely effective at cutting inside from the right wing, especially given that he boasts a phenomenally powerful shot, the 26-year-old is likely to give England international Leighton Baines plenty to think about on Monday evening.

Puncheon is also out of contract in the summer. He has already gone about proving that he is good enough for the top tier, and will be looking to continue doing so, given the distinct possibility that his current club may not be competing in the Premier League at the beginning of next season.

S. Pienaar

Position: Midfielder

After an unsuccessful stint at Tottenham, the South African has returned to Merseyside and proceeded to recreate the form which persuaded the league's best clubs that he was worthy of the step up.

Fleet of foot, quick of mind, and possessing an almost telepathic relationship with Baines on the left flank, the probing and delving of Pienaar has gone largely under the radar this season amidst the praise given to Baines and Marouane Fellaini in particular.

The 30-year-old is a hugely dangerous player, though, and will need to be tracked closely by rookie full-back Luke Shaw if Eveton's attack is to be successfuly nullified on Monday.

Editor's Prediction

Though the Saints have overcome their early woes and drummed up some very decent form of late, few would bet against the tenacity and determination of David Moyes' men winning out at St Mary's.

Though Everton's persevering mentality is rightly praised a great deal, the Toffees also boast a potent blend of technical quality, experience and hunger right throughout their side, and there can be little doubt that the visitors boast a far superior team, man-for-man, than their hosts.

Southampton will be bouyed by their midweek point at Stamford Bridge, but they will find themselves underdogs once again on Monday night, and only the brave will be backing them to come away from the fixture with anything.
