Live Commentary

  • I'm Alex Moretto, and that's all for today's action at Hillsborough. I'd like to thank you all for joining me for what was a thoroughly entertaining fixture between Sheffield Wednesday and Charlton. Good bye!
  • The Owls did everything but score in the final 20 or so minutes, and they will argue they did when Miguel Llera's header was cleared off the line. Nonetheless, Charlton hold on for a well earned victory, ending the possibility of the first Sheffield Derby in the cup in 54 years.
  • FULL-TIME: SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY 0-1 CHARLTON. The match took some time to come to life early on, but what a second half we had here today! Both teams will feel they deserved a victory, and perhaps the Owls were unlucky not to equalize late on, but the visitors were the much better team in the first half and that proved to be the difference. Goals from Callum Harriott and Simon Church put Charlton into the quarter-finals!
  • 90' + 5'
The Owls throw everything into the box, but Charlton deal with it well. Martinez is up to whip a ball in, but it's put out for a goal kick and that's the last of the action at Hillsborough! Charlton hold and they're off to face the other Sheffield, United, at Bramall Lane in a week and a half.
  • 90' + 4'
INCREDIBLE SAVE BY HAMER! Free kick awarded to the Owls at the half-way line. It's lofted into the box but cleared only as far as Maguire who cuts to his right and lets fly. The shot is deflected and Hamer manages to change direction and make a desperation stop! Brilliant stuff from the Charlton keeper!
  • 90' + 3'
    Substitution Astrit Ajdarević Andy Hughes
  • 90' + 1'
Charlton break on a counter, but Ajdarevic's shot it collected by Martinez who moves it quickly up the field.
  • 90'
    Substitution Richard Wood Dorian Dervite
  • 90'
The ensuing corner from Maguire is superb, but it's headed over the bar! The Owls are inching ever closer to that equalizer, but they're running out of time. Five minutes to be added here...
  • 89'
Again a scramble in the box stays out! Maguire's free kick from just outside the area is blocked, but it falls for his teammate whose shot deflects just wide! Nervy moments for both teams as we enter injury time!
  • 88'
    Yellow Card Richard Wood
  • 87'
HOW DID THAT STAY OUT?! Sheffield Wednesday somehow fail to equalize there! The cross in is just tipped away by Hamer, but right to Best who has an open net, but his shot hits his own teammate and stays out!
  • 85'
    Substitution Simon Church R. Ghoochannejhad
  • 84'
The 24, 607 in attendance are all on the edge of their seats as we round into the closing moments here. Charlton are about ready to make their first substitution, as goalscorer Simon Church comes off for Reza Ghoochannejhad.
  • 81'
The Owls are growing increasingly desperate now. This time a hopeful ball is played forward towards Best, but Morrison boxes him out well and clears. Charlton are defending well, but they're playing on their heels at the moment as Sheffield Wednesday press for an equalizer.
  • 79'
Sheffield Wednesday win a free kick along the right, but the cross is over everyone's head and out for a throw. We're in for a hectic finish at Hillsborough!
  • 77'
    Yellow Card Joseph Mattock
  • 77'
STAT ATTACK: The Owls have lost their last two home games, to Wigan and Derby County, and were shutout in both.
  • 75'
Sheffield Wednesday players clearly still unhappy with he referee's decision to not award the goal, as the fans begin to jump on Mark Clattenburg now every time the whistle sounds.
  • 73'
    Substitution Benik Afobe Jeremy Helan
  • 73'
DO THE OWLS HAVE AN EQUALIZER?! Controversy here as the corner is headed towards goal by Miguel Llera. It's off the post and along the line as Hamer collects. Sheffield Wednesday believe it's across and celebrate their second goal, but it hasn't been awarded by Mark Clattenburg and play continues!
  • 72'
This time it's dealt with well by Hamer who punches clear, but not far enough as the Owls get back in possession and win yet another free kick. The cross is cleared but Sheffield Wednesday have won a corner.
  • 70'
Close call there as Chris Maguire is fouled near the touch line, just outside the edge of the area. He thought it was a penalty, but the Owls will have to settle with another free kick.
  • 67'
    Yellow Card Glenn Loovens
  • 67'
Another free kick from Jackson now is sent into a dangerous area. Ajdarevic tries to poke the loose ball towards the mass of bodies, but this time the Owls manage to clear. It's been non-stop action here in the second half at Hillsborough!
  • 65'
    Assist Johnnie Jackson
  • 65'
    Goal Simon Church
GOAAAAAAAAAAAL! It's completely against the run of play, but Charlton have taken the lead from a free kick (what else?). Jackson's ball in is splendid and it's met by Simon Church who heads the visitors in front!
  • 64'
    Yellow Card Llera
  • 63'
The Owls concede possession and Charlton break forward. Llera drags down an attacker and is shown the first yellow of the match. Free kick in a dangerous position for Charlton.
  • 62'
    Yellow Card Leon Best
  • 61'
The crowd is back in full force here supporting their Owls, who sense blood. They're taking control of this game as Charlton struggle to defend.
  • 59'
Another glorious chance for the Owls, and it comes again from a free kick. The ball in is superb, straight onto the head of Llera but he can't connect cleanly and Hamer makes the stop before Jackson clears.
  • 58'
    Substitution Gary Gardner Atdhe Nuhiu
  • 58'
    Substitution Jacques Maghoma Caolan Lavery
  • 57'
    Goal Leon Best
GOAAAAAAAAAAAAL! And there's the equalizer for Sheffield Wednesday! From yet another free kick, the ball is lofted into the box and headed into the path of Leon Best who drives his left-footed shot between two defenders and into the top corner!
  • 55'
Another foul here as Ajdarevic and Gardner collide at the half-way line. The free kick is awarded in Charlton's favor, although it looked like the Standard Liege loan went into the back of the Sheffield Wednesday midfielder. It's been a tense opening 10 minutes here in the second half.
  • 53'
Free kicks for both sides within a few seconds of each other as the pace has begun to pick up. The Owls are pressing every ball in search of an equalizer and Mark Clattenburg is getting very liberal with his whistle to prevent this from getting out of hand.
  • 51'
Johnnie Jackson fires just wide! Ajdarevic lays it off for the captain who fires wide of the far post from a distance. The Owls take the goal kick short and they're keeping possession well here, something we didn't see from either side in the first half.
  • 48'
Leon best looks up to the heavens in disbelief after dispossessing the defender and getting in position for a shot, but scuffs his curled effort well wide of the far post. Good chance at an a equalizer wasted there.
  • 46'
Sheffield Wednesday kick off and the second half has begun here at Hillsborough.
  • The players make their way back onto the pitch to 'Get Ready for This' by 2 Unlimited, and we're about set to get the second half underway!
  • STAT ATTACK: The most recent meeting between the two sides in the competition was in January of 2006, in the third round at Hillsborough, with Charlton winning 4-2 thanks to goals from Dennis Rommedahl (2), Matthew Holland and Darren Bent.
  • HALF-TIME: SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY 0-1 CHARLTON. The visitors were by far the better team for the majority of the half, and have a lead to show for it. The Owls came to life late in the half, as the pace really began to pick up. Manager Stuart Gray will be hoping his team can carry that momentum into the second half as they continue their search for an equalizer.
  • 45' + 4'
Crazy conclusion to the half! A long ball from the back is chased down by Church, who goes down despite being behind the defence. No foul is called and the Addicks are livid following the referees decision. That could have been dangerous for Miguel Llera, who could have been sent off as a result of that tug of the jersey.
  • 45' + 2'
The Owls push forward again, but play is brought to a halt as Lawrie Wilson goes down after Best catches his leg while attacking a loose ball.
  • 45' + 1'
Into the first of three minutes of added time now, but the play has slowed as Benfik Afobe goes down and is being attended to by trainers.
  • 44'
Charlton are really playing on the back foot here as we approach half-time! Harriott wins a corner for the Owls, and the ensuing cross creates a melee in the box, but Afobe can't get his shot through the mess of bodies and it's scrambled clear.
  • 42'
Another close call there as Sheffield Wednesday begin to apply the pressure! Leon Best does well with his first touch to bring down a ball, but opts for a rushed shot on goal as opposed to passing it off for Afobe who would have been in clear. Hamer palms down the shot and pounces on the loose ball to prevent a corner. Much better this, from the Owls.
  • 40'
Gardner is starting to make his presence felt in this match. The Owls win a free kick and the ball is lofted towards the crowd in the box. The clearance goes straight up into the air, but Gardner concedes a foul as he comes charging int to try ad win the ball.
  • 38'
Play resumes now and the first shot on target for the Owls comes just moments later. Jackson's cross is cleared, but only as far as Gary Gardner, who smacks the ball towards goal. Hamer does well to grab the swerving shot and prevent any second chance opportunities for a lurking Benfik Afobe.
  • 36'
Coke is still down being attended to by the Owls trainers as the players grab some water and a breather on the sidelines.
  • 34'
There's a bit of a delay here now as Giles Coke is down and appears to be in a lot of pain, clutching what looks like his right hand or arm as he fell awkwardly following a mid-air collision.
  • 32'
STAT ATTACK: The Owls last made it to this stage of the competition in the 2010-11 season, where they were eliminated after a 3-0 defeat at Birmingham City.
  • 29'
A sarcastic applause from the Wednesday fans as referee Mark Clattenburg awards the Owls a free kick. There has been very little to cheer about through the first 30 minutes for fans of the home side.
  • 27'
The Owls finally create their first half-chance of the game, as Maguire's cross is whipped in towards the back post but Maghoma just fails to get a touch on it, with Hamer scrambling to get across.
  • 24'
The Addicks are right back on attack as Church collects a loose ball and fires towards goal, but it deflects into the waiting arms of Damian Martinez. Sheffield Wednesday have to change things up here as the 4-4-2 formation isn't working for them so far.
  • 22'
    Goal Callum Harriotts
  • 22'
GOAAAAAAAAAAAL! It's a thunderous finish from Callum Harriott who smashes home a half-volley from 12 yards out, and the visitors take a deserved 1-0 lead!
  • 19'
STAT ATTACK: The two sides will meet again at Hillsborough in league play in late April, with the first meeting between the sides at the Valley ending in a 1-1 stalemate.
  • 17'
The Owls advance into the attacking third, but immediately concede possession after a throw-in. They have yet to manage any looks at goal in this match, making it a easy start for Hamer in the Charlton net.
  • 15'
More pressure now from the Addicks. Jackson picks out Harriott along the left, who lays it off for Fox. The left-back's cross is poor, however, and it's cleared by Llera who starts Sheffield Wednesday on the break.
  • 13'
Nearly an opener for Charlton! The ball is played into the box from midfield, and the Owls can't deal with it. Church pokes it away from a defender amidst a scramble in the box, and it falls for Ajdarevic, but he can't pick out the far corner as the ball rolls just inches wide. Martinez was planted to the ground, all the midfielder had to do there was hit the target.
  • 11'
The Owls are beginning to try and take charge. They're pressuring Charlton every time they get the ball, which had made for a few rushed clearances in defence under chase from Afobe.
  • 9'
STAT ATTACK: Charlton have progressed each of the three times these sides have met in the FA Cup.
  • 7'
Sloppy start to the match. Each team has given the ball away a few times in the midfield as a result of errant passes and poor control. The ball has hardly been kept in play, with both sides having plenty of throw-ins in the early stages.
  • 5'
Charlton win a free kick near the half-way line and loft a ball into the box. It's not cleared effectively, and it rolls towards the touch-line for Ajdarevic, but his low cross in is collected by Martinez and the danger is averted.
  • 3'
The corner is played short and Sheffield Wednesday deal with it easily. Neither team is really keeping the ball well in the early stages. The midfield is crowded, with space very hard to come by thus far.
  • 1'
Charlton get us uderway in their all red kits, moving from left to right. The Owls are in their classic blue and white's. Charlton push forward right away and win a corner less that a minute into the match.
  • The players have taken the pitch and we're about set to begin here at Hillsborough!
  • WHAT'S AT STAKE? The winner of today's match will go on to face Sheffield United at Bramall Road in the quarter-finals, meaning a Sheffield Derby could be on the cards with a victory for the home side.

  • CHARLTON: Hamer; Wilson, Fox, Morrison, Wood, Harriott, Poyet, Cousins, Jackson, Ajdarevic, Church.
  • Changes: The Owls are without former Charlton player Jose Semedo with a broken leg, while winger Michail Antonio suffered an ankle injury against Huddersfield meaning he will also miss out on the match.
