Yet another Celtic chance wasted, as Matthew launches a throw, which Van Dijk heads on to Mulgrew, but he can only divert the ball over the bar for goal kick to the home side.
Samaras looks like he packed up for the evening, as he gives away a throw in, in the middle of the Celtic half, then stares at Commons, who was looking for the pass.
Van Dijk tries to get Celtic back into the game with a free kick from the edge of the area after Commons was hauled to the deck, but his effort sails well over the bar.
The home side however are looking in the mood to add to their lead, as Celtic switch things up with Amido Balde coming on to play up front, while Mulgrew moves to left back.
Celtic's Champions League hopes hang by a thread after Khizhnichenko put the home side two ahead, now the Scottish side are pushing forward in the desperate search for an away goal to give some comfort.
Goal Sergei Khizhnichenko
Shakhter get a second after yet more comedy defending at the back after Vicus' mishit shot arrives at Khizhnichenko and he makes no mistake to pile the pressure on Celtic for the second leg.
Forster once again looking uncomfortable as he punches away another cross into his box, but thankfully for the English stopper, Brown makes sure Shakhter can capitalise.
The visitors should be level, with Izaguirre curling yet another cross from the left, this time Forrest got his head to the ball, but Mokin managed to make the vital save.
20 minutes remaining in Astana, with Celtic still behind despite having the majority of the ball, but they still can't break the Shakter defence.
Substitute Adam Matthews looks to replicate the long throw technique, but he can't find a Celtic teammate inside the box.
Mouyokolo fails to deal with a long ball, that eventually allows Sergei Khizhnichenko to get a shot on goal, but Forster gets down well to save comfortably.
From that free kick, Celtic are almost gifted an equaliser, with the ball going straight to Commons, who makes a 60 yeard dash before playing in Izaguirre, but his team the Honduran fails to even get a shot away.
Hoops skipper Scott Brown is starting to get frustrated, as he gives away a free kick in the middle of his own half.
Shakhter's throw in dangerman Vicius continues to launch the ball into the penalty area, leaving Celtic scrambling about their own area to clear.
The Parkhead side are continuing to see a lot of the ball, but once they arrive in the final third, they are met with a swarm of home defenders looking to clear the danger.
A game of head tennis breaks out in the middle of the visitors box, as Forster tries to punch a free kick from Finonchenko away from danger.
Celtic continue to come up against a Kazakhstani wall, as both Mulgrew and Commons are blocked on their charge towards the penalty area.
Another superb chance for Celtic, as Izaguirre waltzes his way past several defenders, but his strike on goal is woeful and goes well over the bar.
Mokin revers back to type as the Hoops swing in another corner which he flaps at once again, but Celtic can't make anything of the mistake.
The visitors are seeing the majority of the ball in the opening couple of minutes, which leads to booing from the home crowd.
Corner from the left by Mulgrew is too high and can't find a Celtic player as the extremely tall home defence clear easily.

Yellow Card Steven Mouyokolo
More joy on the left for Celtic, as Izaguirre manages to put the ball into the danger area and as it comes out of the box it arrives at the feet of Joe Ledley, but the Welshman balloons the ball over the bar.
After some earlier mishaps, Shakhter keeper Mokin has decided not to come out for a corner, from which Van Dijk is punished for climbing on a defender.

The Kazakhstan champions have managed to keep their shape, with their three central defenders, not allowing any space to either Commons or Samaras to get in behind them for an equaliser.
Once again the long throws continue to baffle Celtic, as they fail to properly deal with the set piece and eventually manage to clear for a corner at the last second.
Celtic should be level as Charlie Mulgrew lofts a free kick into the box for Samaras, but the Greek striker somehow manages to put it wide of goal.
Aleksandar Simcevic gets allowed space on the right wing from Izaguirre and that allows him to cross for Sergei Maliy, but his header is beyond poor for the home side.
Both sides have settled down after the early goal, but neither have found the final ball for either Shakhter to extend their lead or Celtic to get back level.
The Scottish champions continue to find joy down the left wing, with Izaguirre whipping in a cross to Commons, but his header fails to find the target.
The new-look defence for the visitors looks shaky at times, as both summer signings Mouyokolo and Van Dijk get used to playing together.
Near thing for Celtic, as Kris Commons lets fly from 25 yards out, leaving Shakter stopper Aleksandr Mokin, but fortunately for him the ball cannoned off the bar and away from danger.
Finonchenko may have done well with the goal, but on the corner there he didn't look so good, as he vastly overhit his target.
The home support are up for this, with their team taking an early lead, the Scottish champions will need to make sure they don't go further behind.
Celtic respond immediately to going behind, putting pressure on the Shakter goal, with James Forrest crossing from the right, but there are no takers in green and white to get the Hoops level.

Penalty claims from the home side, as the ball bounces off the plastic pitch and hits Steven Mouyokolo, but the referee is having none of it.
Sergei Maliy takes one of the worst dives seen in a long time, as with no-one near him as he advanced out of the penalty area, he stumbled to the ground. Probably going to blame the plastic pitch.
Shakhter Karagandy continuing to live dangerously, as they concede yet another corner after Georgios Samaras races down the left wing.
An almighty scramble in the box, as the home side fail to deal with another corner and a header from Van Dijk is headed off the line.
