Roma have set up a mouthwatering quarter-final tie with Juventus courtesy of a second-half salvo to defeat Fiorentina 3-0 at Stadio Olimpico in the Coppa Italia.

Erik Lamela gave the hosts the lead shortly after the break, before the Argentine doubled his side’s advantage. Fabio Borini rubbed salt into Florentine wounds with a late goal after some poor defending from the away side.

The match started at a slow pace, but Fiorentina gradually began to craft chances. Adem Ljajic squandered two great chances to put the visitors ahead, scooping one over the bar and forcing a decent save from Maarten Stekelenburg with the other.

Fiorentina continued to have the upper hand, and were unlucky to not take the lead after Cicinho made two great blocks within seconds of each other to prevent Riccardo Montolivo and Stevan Jovetic from putting the visitors in front after a goalmouth scramble.

The danger seemed to wake up Roma. Lamela sent Francesco Totti through on goal, but the 35-year-old was only capable of forcing a good save from Murara Neto.

With half-time approaching, a well-worked free kick found Cicinho unmarked at the far post. The Brazilian laid the ball back to Lamela, whose shot was deflected over the bar.

The anaemic Federico Viviani was withdrawn at the interval, and replaced by Simone Perrotta, and Luis Enrique’s substitution paid immediate dividends.

Totti tore into the box to reach Perrotta’s knockdown, and although the Roma skipper was unable to get the ball under control, it broke to Lamela, who kept his cool to send a shot through Neto’s legs.

Fiorentina could have been level within a minute of going behind as Jovetic’s cross found Manuel Pasqual completely unmarked in acres of space, but the 29-year-old’s shot was heroically blocked and diverted over the crossbar by Perrotta.

Then, Alessio Cerci almost got the visitors back on level terms with a left-footed shot that Stekelenburg blocked with his feet,

Roma then killed off the game, showing more efficiency in front of goal than their opponents. Another substitute, Fabio Borini hassled the Fiorentina defence, winning the ball before laying it on to Totti. The playmaker then fed Lamela, who was left with a simple finish to put his side two goals up.

More wastefulness from Fiorentina resulted in a third goal. A poor pass from Neto went straight to Borini, who ran into the box and promptly punished his opponent’s sloppiness.

With the Florence outfit vanquished, Luis Enrique's men will face Juventus in the quarter-finals of the competition in a fortnight's time.
