Republic of Ireland - Kazakhstan Preview: Boys in Green look to bow out on high

Matt Browne

The Irish will be hoping to finish a difficult qualification campaign, which resulted in Giovanni Trapattoni's sacking in September, on a high note against Miroslav Beranek's side

Republic of Ireland will look to halt a five-game winless run when they host Kazakhstan in their final World Cup qualifier on Tuesday.

The Boys in Green's latest setback saw them humbled 3-0 by Germany in their Group C encounter on Friday, thus ending their slim hopes of achieving a play-off spot in the European section.

Interim manager Noel King, who took temporary charge after Giovanni Trapattoni was sacked in September, must now try to boost his team ahead of the dead-rubber fixture at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

Ireland look guaranteed to finish fourth, as they could only claim third if there is a 10-goal swing with Austria.

Despite a poor campaign, midfielder Glenn Whelan has called on his team-mates to complete their fixtures with a flourish and believes they must show more attacking intent.

"We have got to finish on a high how," he told reporters. "We know the group has been disappointing.

"For [the Germany game], Noel spoke about defending but, come Tuesday, we would love him to let the reins off a little bit and go out on a high against Kazakhstan and give the fans something to cheer about."

Ireland's record goalscorer, Robbie Keane, was only named among the substitutes against Germany but he could return to reclaim the captain's armband from Everton's Seamus Coleman.

Kazakhstan head into the fixture in the knowledge that they will finish fifth in Group C.

They trail Ireland by six points but cannot be caught by bottom place Faroe Islands.

Their solitary success in the group came in a 2-1 success over the Faroes in September and they were defeated 2-1 by Ireland in the reverse fixture last September thanks to late goals from Keane and Kevin Doyle.

Shakhter Karagandy striker Andrei Finonchenko is likely to lead the line for Miroslav Beranek's side and has two goals thus far in qualifying.
