Little he could do about the goal. And little else he had to do after that.
Got forward well and almost set up Benzema twice for good chances just before half-time. Well off target with a wild effort in the second half and largely untroubled at the back following a few nervy moments early on.
On the back foot in the early exchanges as Adrian was allowed time and space to put Atletico ahead, but an otherwise commanding performance apart from that, made easier by his side's numerical advantage.
Back in central defence and used his pace on a couple of occasions early on to get himself out of trouble. Made one good clearance on the ground and looked generally solid.
Á. di María
Scored on his return from injury and showed neat skills on the flanks in his hour-long display. Also forced a lot of free-kicks but spent too much time on the ground play-acting, which tarnishes his game.
Lovely range of passing as usual and bossed the midfield. Also got the booking he needed to miss next weekend's match and free himself up for El Clasico. Not that it was deliberate!
Almost set up Benzema early on and was lively as he took free-kicks and corners in the opening minutes, but looked a little lost in a physical battle and faded.
Filling in at left-back again, Lass was positive but didn't get as forward as much as he managed in the thrashing of Dinamo Zagreb in midweek. Another solid performance, though.
Just the sort of match for the German midfielder, who was a real midfield enforcer. Stuck to his task, made key tackles and never stopped working. Off target with long-range effort early on.
Not his best match, but he was still decisive. Scored two penalties with typical aplomb and set up Di Maria's goal, too. Was a constant threat and gave Perea problems all night.
Won the penalty which changed the game but left his shooting boots at home. Had a number of chances and should have done better with several of them.
His first major contribution turned out to be his last as he brought down Benzema and was sent off. Left his team in the lurch as they were leading, and a first win since 1999 never looked likely after that.
The Colombian is error-prone at the best of times and struggled to deal with Ronaldo here, apart form one good tackle early in the second half. Booked for a poor challenge on the Portuguese as well.
Showed glimpses of his potential early on and made one good interception, but was on the back foot after Courtois' dismissal and was lucky not to be booked for a series of fouls. Shot over late in the first half.
Made a couple of good forward runs early on but was pushed back by Di Maria and became overly physical. Booked in the second half for a foul on Diarra. Lucky to escape punishment earlier as well.
Miserable night for the Uruguayan, whose mistake let in Higuain for the third goal. His foul on the Argentine also led to the penalty which Cristiano scored to make it 4-1. And to cap it all, he was shown a straight red card. Dreadful night.
Looked positive early in the game as he linked up well with his team-mates in attack, but faded as Atletico were reduced to 10 men. Saw yellow for an early foul on Di Maria, too.
Diego started the game positively and it was his excellent through ball which set up Adrian for the goal. Unfortunately for him, he was the man sacrificed after Atletico were reduced to 10 men. Also booked.
More brawn than brain in the centre of midfield, he had little joy against Xabi Alonso and Khedira, particulary after the first 20 minutes.
Produced a dangerous cross after three minutes and drove forward again 10 minutes later as Atleti impressed early on. But was mainly forced back after that and looked far from comfortable.
Tried his luck with after playing a neat one-two and blasting an effort well over after 58 minutes. Manzano applauded - anything was worth a try by then.
The pick for Atletico. The Spanish Under-21 striker began the campaign on the bench and looked as if he would hardly be used all season. Now he is an unquestionable starter. Lively again, a threat when he had the chance and scored a great early goal to give Atletico hope of an upset.
- 13 Adán
- 18 Albiol
Late sub, had no time to make an impact.
- 5 N. Şahin
- 11 Granero
Came on with 15 minutes left but made minimal impact apart from one or two decent runs.
Replaced Di Maria and was alert to pounce on an awful mistake from Godin to score the third and then won the penalty for the fourth goal. A fantastic cameo.
Came on after Courtois' dismissal and could do nothing about any of the goals. Left exposed by Godin for third and was unable to guess right for the penalties. Made one decent but routine save from Benzema.
- 20 Juanfran
Made little impression after coming on as a sub.
- 19 Koke
- 4 Mario Suárez
José Antonio Reyes
Came on with 14 minutes left but there was no way even he could change the game by then. Minimal influence.
