QPR - Everton Preview: Home side have lost five of their previous six Premier League games

Mark Hughes' men have struggled at Loftus Road of late but the Toffees are on a poor run away from Merseyside, winning just one of their last six games on the road

Onuoha, Hill, Ferdinand, Taiwo
Wright-Phillips, Barton, Buzsaky, Mackie

Hibbert, Heitinga, Distin, Baines
Pienaar, Neville, Fellaini, Drenthe

Never has a preview been open to such debate. Both clubs are set to welcome back a host of injured players, but as usual it is almost an impossible task to second-guess both managers.

QPR will expect Taye Taiwo to recover from a what looked like a mixture of fatigue and a shin injury sustained against Fulham.

On the longer-term list, Luke Young is due back from a pulled hamstring, as is DJ Campbell. Heidar Helguson should have spent enough time nursing a troublesome groin injury to at least return to the squad.

Samba Diakite misses this game thanks to his debut red card, whilst Djibril Cisse will complete his three-game suspension following this clash.

As for the Toffees, two weeks without a competitive fixture has allowed minor injury victims Tim Cahill, Victor Anichebe and Leon Osman to return.

Jack Rodwell's hamstring is believed to be mended and Phil Jagielka should have begun training this week following the knee injury that has kept him out for almost two months.

New signing Darron Gibson is expected to miss a month with his own knee complaint but David Moyes is boosted by striker Nikica Jelavic's return to fitness and he should take a place on the bench for the first time since his move from Rangers.

  • Manager Mark Hughes played for the Toffees during the twilight of his career, featuring 16 times and scoring just one goal.
  • QPR have won one and lost five of their previous six Premier League encounters.
  • Everton have won just one of their previous six away games, losing two.
  • The Toffees have scored a meagre four goals from their past six away games.
  • Heidar Helguson (pictured right) has netted nine times this season, more than anyone else on either side.
  • Everton have scored only 11 goals in their last 12 league games and only more than once in one game during that run.
  • In 1989, Everton beat QPR 1-0 in the semi-final of the now defunct Simod Cup (otherwise known as the Full Members Cup). Everton would go on to lose a seven-goal thriller to Nottingham Forest in the final 4-3.

Everyone's favourite tweeter has found himself in the midst of a relegation scrap this season. Despite his outspoken nature and openly critical views on Neil Warnock's tenure, Mark Hughes decided to retain the midfielder as captain.

QPR fans have yet to see the form that prompted Barton to proclaim himself as England's best central midfielder in the colours of Newcastle, but they will begin to demand such high levels as the prospect of relegation looms ever larger.

D. Stracqualursi

The Argentine workhorse joined Everton in the summer on loan and has quickly become a fan favourite. Though ten of his 17 appearances have come from the subs bench, his first Premier League goal secured victory over Chelsea.

It may have taken him until late January to open his account for the Toffees, but he has now notched three goals in five games and will look to continue this purple patch on Saturday.

Editor's Prediction

QPR have lost their last three home games but, provided they can keep 11 men on the pitch for 90 minutes, I see them having just enough to match a tough Everton side.

The principle aim for a David Moyes side is keeping things tight and I expect this to be a low-scoring affair.
