Very confident performance from the France international. Was always positive from set-pieces as he came to meet the ball, often getting brilliant punches on to the ball. Not given much of a chance with Ramsey's goal.
Unbelievably lucky to not concede a penalty as the former Charlton Athletic man effectively punched the ball in the area, however, luckily for him the officials inexplicably missed it. Seconds later he cleared a Van Persie header off the line and ulitmately frustrated the Dutchman all evening.
Comfortable enough from the former Osasuna man. Dealt well with the attack-minded Andre Santos and ensured Arshavin had a very quiet match.
Struggled with Walcott's pace throughout, but often redeemed himself with covering blocks on the winger's crosses. However, in fairness, Walcott's deliveries were pretty poor.
Put in some good blocks and tackles around his area, particularly when Arteta thought he beat him, but the big defender stretched out and halted the Spaniard's attack. Aside from one clumsy moment that almost allowed Walcott to score, the centre-half had a good game.
The France international will be disappointed with his showing. Always looked to beat his man, but was too often out-muscled by his marker. Tried to get at Santos as often as he could, but rarely made the most of his dangerous positions.
Similarly to Diarra, looked to break up the Arsenal attacks, doing very little in the attacking third.
Unspectacular from the former Bordeaux man. Bossed Rosicky for much of the match. Kept possession simple and helped out in defence. Effective display.
Didn't have anywhere near the amount of influence on the match as he would have liked, but still looked assured in possession. Rarely afforded much space by the Arsenal midfield, much to his disappointment.
Quiet evening from the Ghana international. Enjoyed a couple of short runs in the first half, but was rarely used by his team-mates. Saw more of the ball after the break, but not enough.
Was impressive in flashes as his pace and skill tortured Mertesacker at times, but wasn't in or around the Arsenal box anywhere near enough, therefore failing to give his team-mates a focal point in attack. Eventually replaced for the more robust Gignac.
The young goalkeeper had very little to do throughout the match, rarely getting forced into making any saves.
Very lucky to not concede a penalty in the first half as Morel's cross blatantly hit the young full-back's left arm from a fair distance. However, the Finland Under-21 international was one of the visitors' best players on the night as he always looked to get forward, but was rarely caught out in defence. Very encouraging display. Forced off with an injury in the second half.
Some of the big German's passing didn't help out his defensive colleagues as he gave the ball away several times in the first half, but was pretty solid defensively after the break as Marseille looked to put more emphasis on attack, winning header after header.
Struggled throughout as the Brazilian looked very nervous, particularly early on as the Marseille attackers did well to pressurise the left-back. Looked comfortable in possession, but defending is far from his strongest suit. Improved after the break
Similarly to his central defensive partner, he played some risky passes during the opening exchanges, but was very good in the tackle throughout the match, proving an effective last line of defence. Good performance.
Very poor display from the Russian. Did nothing of note and gave the inexperienced Azpilicueta a very easy night. Has to start improving in an Arsenal shirt or he'll be out.
Energetic performance, but was sloppy too. Several times he gave away free-kicks in dangerous areas, or gave the ball away when he shouldn't have. Helped crowd out Ayew in the second half to prevent an almost certain goal. Looked better in attack as he threaded through some nice passes.
Not particularly effective as the Czech was marshalled very well by the imposing Diarra. Looked to get on the ball and create, but he could rarely carve open the opportunities.
As usual, the neat Spaniard showcased his decent array of passing, but had a relatively quiet night nonetheless. Thought he was about to score as he beat N'Koulou in the first half, but the defender returned with a great last-ditch tackle.
Not a great evening for the winger. Tormented Morel at times with his ridiculous pace, but all too often his final ball let him down as his crosses rarely beat the first man. Probably should have scored when N'Koulou gifted him possession in the area, but Mandanda made the save. Replaced by Gervinho with 25 minutes to go.
R. van Persie
Started off well as he exhibited close control and quick feet, however his influence faded as the match went on. Given a tough time by the physical duo of Diawara and N'Koulou.
- 1 G. Bracigliano
- 13 D. Traoré
- 26 J. Sabo
- 31 G. Roland
Replaced the unspectacular Cheyrou with 10 minutes to go.
Came on for the final 20 minutes or so, replacing Lucho, but fared little better in terms of creating chances.
The former Toulouse man came on for the quiet Remy and looked lively, but couldn't make the difference.
- 21 Ł. Fabiański
Came on for the injured Jenkinson. Picked up a yellow card very unluckily after a very good tackle on Andre Ayew.
- 39 F. Coquelin
Saw the last quarter of an hour after coming on for Arshavin and grabbed the winner in the dying seconds with a good finish from the edge of the box.
- 30 Y. Benayoun
- 29 M. Chamakh
Replaced the frustrating Walcott. Always looked to attack and was a nuisance to the Marseille defence, but didn't do much of note.
