Olympique Lyonnais 3-1 Lille: Lisandro Lopez and Yoann Gourcuff get Claude Puel's side back on track

Lyon may start to push up the Ligue 1 table...

Olympique Lyonnais produced arguably their best football of the season to claim a 3-1 victory against Lille, who, previous to the game, had been unbeaten this term.

Lisandro Lopez took less than two minutes to open Lyon's account. Emerson was bullied off the ball by the Argentine striker, who took aim at goal 25 yards and hammered a swerving shot past Mickael Landreau.

An open first half ended with the hosts going 2-0 up when a horrible miscommunication between Landreau and Adil Rami saw the ball ricochet to Yoann Gourcuff, who made no mistake in lashing the ball into the net from close range.

This was a match in which Lyon played with more confidence than they have mustered in recent weeks, yet they were still heavily reliant on goalkeeper Hugo Lloris at times.

The French stopper made a brilliant first-half save from Gervinho after a penetrative run through the centre of the OL side by Pierre-Alain Frau, and the shot-stopper manufactured an equally-fine block from Sow after the break.

But Lyon also had to rely on their woodwork to rescue them at times. Aly Cissokho directed the ball onto his own bar from a wickedly swerving Yohan Cabaye corner, and later in the first half Rami thumped a header against the horizontal from a similar situation.

Lyon were not without their offensive swagger. Jeremy Toulalan, who limped off injured early on, hit the post with an excellent shot, while Lisandro had a header flicked round the post by Landreau in the last minute of the first period.

Briefly, Lille reduced their arrears to a solitary goal early in the second period as Moussa Sow scored a spectacular overhead kick.

In attempting to clear a dangerous cross, Anthony Reveillere could only skew a header back towards his goal, where Sow loitered in a position that would have otherwise been offside. Nevertheless, the striker's skill in converting the chance was remarkable.

Any threat of a fight back was seemingly quickly allayed when Florent Balmont upended Kim Kallstrom in the box, presenting Lisandro with an opportunity to strike home a second goal from 12 yards. The midfielder showed no nerves over the penalty kick, drilling the ball beyond Landreau.

In the final frantic 20 minutes, Lyon were pinned into their own box as Lille pushed incessantly forward, and at times the home side rode their luck to pick up the victory.

LOSC were given late hope as Eden Hazard’s trickery drew a rash challenge from Jeremy Pied, who was shown a second yellow card and was subsequently dismissed.

But Lyon comfortably saw out the remainder of the game and their victory against Lille could rejuvinate Claude Puel's men after a disappointing start to the campaign.
