Commentary

Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.
Michael O'Neill will be satisfied with the performance as a brace from Kyle Lafferty and goals from Steven Davis and Jamie Ward secured the victory. Northern Ireland now have four points from their opening two Group C matches ahead of their clash against world champions Germany next week.
Northern Ireland secure a comfortable win this evening and they could have had more goals had they been more clinical in the final third, while San Marino keeper Aldo Simoncini also put in an impressive display between the sticks.
FULL-TIME: NORTHERN IRELAND 4-0 SAN MARINO

S. Davis

T. Zafferani
M. Stefanelli
San Marino
87' Zafferani replaces Stefanelli for the final three minutes.
87' CHANCE! Lafferty almost notches his second goal of the game as he latches on to Davis' ball across the face of goal, but steers it inches wide of the post.
K. Lafferty
Assist
Northern Ireland
85' Lafferty's miscued header is seized upon by Ward to hammer into the net.
J. Ward
Goal
Northern Ireland
85' GOAL!!!! Ward gets his side's third goal of the evening, displaying predatory instincts at the back post. Lafferty had failed to make decent contact from Ferguson's cross, but the ball fell kindly for the winger's run and he smashed his strike past Simoncini.
85' Berardi this time makes a good intervention at the back to deny Norwood from the edge of the box. The San Marino defenders have been fully committed this evening.
83' CHANCE! McGinn is played into space in the left inside channel and as he shapes to shoot Vitaioli comes across to make a vital block.
81' McGinn lifts a dangerous cross into the box for Washington to attack, but the forward just fails to make contact. Any touch on that ball would have surely nestled into the back of the net.
S. Ferguson
Assist
Northern Ireland
79' Ferguson has been impressive all evening and he finally gets a reward as his perfect cross is tapped home by Lafferty.
K. Lafferty
Goal
Northern Ireland
79' GOAL!!! Northern Ireland get the second goal at last to kill off the game. Ferguson hits a pinpoint cross towards the near post and Lafferty is in the right place to guide his effort beyond the reach of Simoncini into the bottom corner.
78' Davis and McGinn link up well in the final third and the skipper tees up his team-mate inside the area, but the strike from the Aberdeen lacks any curl and goes wide of the target.
P. McNair
C. McLaughlin
Northern Ireland
77' McNair replaces McLaughlin for the final stages of the match.
77' The home side work the ball around the edge of the box to create room for their forwards and eventually it comes to Washington in the inside left channel, but his shot is straight at Simoncini.
75' Ireland switch flanks as Ferguson tries his luck down the left, but his cross is claimed underneath his crossbar by the San Marino keeper.
74' Washington has space to raid down the right flank after collecting McLaughlin's pass, but he fires his low effort straight into Simoncini's body.
K. Lafferty
J. Magennis

67' CHANCE! Magennis makes a good run to open up the San Marino defence and he takes Norwood's pass in stride. He fires a left-footed effort towards the bottom corner, but Simoncini makes the save and gets to his feet to gather up the loose ball.
66' SAVE! Simoncini makes another solid stop to deny the home side as Ward blasts an effort in from the right flank, but he makes the first save and then goes down under pressure from Magennis.
C. Washington
S. Dallas
Northern Ireland
65' Washington replaces Dallas to partner Magennis up front.
64' SAVE! McGinn peels off his man and into space to receive Norwood's throughball, but his shot towards the bottom corner is saved well by Simoncini.
62' McGinn seizes on a loose pass from Simoncini and attempts to lob the San Marino keeper, but can only lift his strike over the bar from 30 yards. It's all one-way traffic at the moment.
61' OFFSIDE! Magennis thinks he has doubled his side's lead as he collects Dallas' cross, but as he sends the ball into the bottom corner the linesman's flag is raised for offside.
61' CHANCE! Davis links up with Magennis through the middle and the forward plays a neat pass for the skipper on the return. Davis only has Simoncini to beat, but he fires his left-footed strike over the bar.
60' Magennis has space and time to pick out an option in the box, but he can only pick out a white shirt twice with his two attempts from the right flank.
58' SAVE! McGinn cuts in from the left and strikes with his right foot towards the top corner. Simoncini makes an excellent save to palm it away from goal, but Dallas almost profits on the rebound, but cannot steer the ball into the net. A huge opportunity spurned from the home side.
D. Cesarini
A. Hirsch
San Marino
56' Hirsch makes way for Cesarini.
55' Ferguson sends the corner into the box, but Simoncini opts to punch it clear rather than just claim, which fails to alleviate the pressure on the San Marino defence.

M. Vitaioli
Yellow Card
San Marino
52' San Marino's discipline is fading here as Vitaioli catches Norwood with a late boot and gets a yellow card.
51' McLaughlin breaks into the box in the inside right channel, but the opening closes quickly as the visitors scramble men back behind the ball.
M. Berardi
Yellow Card
San Marino
50' Berardi goes into the book for bringing down Ward, although it might be a case of mistaken identity.
49' The referee played advantage, but then brought it back for the foul on McGovern. It's stupid from the left-back as he was already booked and receives his marching orders.
49' McGovern gathers the resulting corner with ease, but the gets clattered by Palazzi.
48' Matteo Vitaioli gets a chance to whip a cross into the box as Stefanelli goes down. The cross is a good one into the area, but Davis gets there first to head it behind.
47' CHANCE! Della Vella's clearance lands only as far as Ward on the edge of the box, who strikes the ball first time on the volley. However, Simoncini gets his body behind the strike to make a comfortable save.
46' We're back underway at Windsor Park.
The players are back out for the second half, so we should be underway again shortly.
Michael O'Neill will want to see more urgency from his team after the break to avoid any chance of an unlikely San Marino upset.
Northern Ireland lead at the break thanks to Steven Davis' 26th-minute penalty. San Marino have held in there, despite the home side's dominance of possession and will be the happier of the two teams at the interval.
HALF-TIME: NORTHERN IRELAND 1-0 SAN MARINO
45' The referee brings the first half to an end.
45' Ferguson lofts the ball to the back post and McLaughlin comes in unmarked, but cannot control and sends his effort out for a goal-kick. A poor attempt from the right-back.
44' SAVE! Dallas whips in a good cross to the penalty spot and Ward guides the ball on with pace towards the bottom corner, but Simoncini reacts well to make a diving stop.
43' CHANCE! Ireland almost get caught out at the back, but then race forward on the counter. Ward cuts the ball back into the middle for Davis to shoot, but the skipper takes the effort on first time and guides his strike past the post.
42' McLaughlin does well down the wing for Ireland, winning a throw-in while under pressure from two defenders. He sends the ball back to McGinn from sideline, and his cross finds Magennis, who heads over from 12 yards.
F. Vitaioli
Yellow Card
San Marino
40' Vitaioli goes into the book for tripping Dallas on the flank.
38' Ireland are being patient with the ball and have shown no signs of panic despite their slender lead over the minnows. San Marino have had their moments though, which might just see the home side up the ante before the interval.
36' Ward and Davis play a neat one-two to allow the former to strike at goal, but the forward puts his effort over the crossbar. Nice move from the home side.
35' CHANCE! San Marino come forward down the left as the home side allow Palazzi to run into the box. He cuts the ball back for Hirsch to strike first time on the edge of the box, but the midfielder sends his effort narrowly over the bar.
M. Palazzi
Yellow Card
San Marino
33' Palazzi goes into the book for catching Davis late.
32' McAuley launches the ball forward and Magennis brings it down in the box, but just as it falls for Ward the linesman raises his flag for offside. Both men were in offside positions when the defender sent the ball into the area.
30' Matteo Vitaioli wins a free-kick on the left after going down in a heap from McLaughlin's challenge. He sends the ball into the box, but Stefanelli's header from the edge travels well wide of the post.
28' Ferguson makes a surge down the left flank, but he is prevented from firing another dangerous cross into the box by Berardi, who ushers the ball out of play for a goal-kick. The left-back was the man who sent the delivery in for Magennis to win the penalty.
S. Davis
Penalty Goal
Northern Ireland
26' GOAL!!!! Davis hands Northern Ireland the lead as he blasts his effort into the bottom corner. Simoncini got a hand to the strike, but couldn't get enough off it to prevent the ball from finding the net.
25' PENALTY TO NORTHERN IRELAND! Magnennis is hauled down in the box by Simoncini and the referee points to the spot.
24' The first delivery from Norwood strikes the first San Marino defender, but he gathers to whip a cross in from the flank. It provides a chance for McAuley to attack the ball, but the West Brom man commits a foul and the visitors can clear the danger once again.
23' McGinn wins a free-kick on the right flank and Norwood will lift the cross into the box from 40 yards out.
22' Northern Ireland come forward at pace and Ward cracks an effort from the edge of the box, but it travels wide of the net and just out of the reach of Davis' forward run.
21' OVER! Vitaioli takes the free-kick and curls his effort over the wall, but it has too much power on it to threaten McGovern's goal, drifting narrowly over the bar.
20' San Marino win a free-kick 30 yards from goal as Stefanelli is fouled by McAuley. Matteo Vitaioli stands over the ball waiting to take the set-piece.
18' The home side attack down the right and Ward tries to capitalise on the space at the near post by firing in a low cross, but Simoncini is alert to the danger and smothers ahead of Magennis.
17' Magennis battles well against Vitaioli to win his team a corner, but the resulting delivery from Dallas is poor and cleared with ease by the visitors.
16' McAuley sends the ball forward for Magennis, who tries to angle in pass for the forward run of Davis. However, the ball has just too much pace for the Ireland skipper to reach it before Simoncini gathers in the six-yard box.
14' Evans wins the first clearing header and Dallas wins a free-kick to alleviate the danger on his box, allowing the home side to get the ball forward again.
13' Stefanelli rises highest in the box to head at goal from Palazzi's cross and he wins a corner for his team by knocking his effort off Ferguson. Can the visitors put Ireland under pressure here?
11' Davis pumps the ball forward on the angle for Magennis to head at goal, but the striker gets too much loft on his effort and sends it out harmlessly for a goal-kick.
9' McGinn raids down the right and curls his cross into the box. Ward wins the intial header and Magennis tries to wrap his foot around the ball, but sends his effort over. The striker was penalised for a high boot anyway.
8' Dallas lofts a cross into the box and Simoncini fails to gather. McGinn and Magennis attempt to put the San Marino keeper under pressure, but he gathers at the second attempt.
7' The pattern of the game is well in effect as the home side are dominating possession. It will likely be attack against defence all evening.
5' CHANCE! McGinn sends a great ball across the face of goal which evades Simoncini. Dallas has a tap in if he can make solid contact on the slide, but he fails to catch it with his foot as it hits his body and travels inches wide of the post.
4' San Marino clear the first danger into the box, but Ward arcs a cross to the back post for McAuley's run, but the ball is just too high for the defender to make contact.
3' Dallas makes a good run down the flank and wins the first corner of the match for the home side.
2' Ireland play the ball out to the right again and McGinn has another surge, but on this occasion he sends his cross over Simoncini's goal.
1' McGinn makes an early raid down the right and he sends a cross into a dangerous area, but Davide Simoncini clears the ball to safety.
1' We're underway at Windsor Park.
The players are out on the pitch, so we should be underway shortly.
STAT ATTACK! San Marino have kept only one clean sheet in their last 71 matches. There will be chances a plenty for O'Neill's men this evening.
San Marino have made four changes from their defeat to Azerbaijan. Fabio Vitaoli, Alessandro Della Valle, Mattep Coppini and Matteo Stefanelli all get starts tonight.
Northern Ireland have made two changes from their goalless draw against Czech Republic. Josh Magennis and Niall McGinn come into the starting line-up to replace Kyle Lafferty and Paddy McNair.
San Marino subs: Valentini, Bianchi, Golinucci, Mazza, Manzaroli, Zafferani, Berretti, Censoni, Benedettini, Selva, Cesarini, Rinaldi.
San Marino (5-4-1): Simoncini; Berardi, F Vitaioli, D Simoncini, Della Valle, Palazzi; Hirsch, Tosi, Coppini, M Vitaioli; Stefanelli.
Northern Ireland subs: Hughes, Washington, Evans, Hodson, Flanagan, Carson, Mannus, Lafferty, McGivern, Paton, McNair, Lund.
Northern Ireland (4-4-1-1): McGovern; McLaughlin, McAuley, Evans, Ferguson; McGinn, Davis, Norwood, Dallas; Ward; Magennis.
The team news has been announced and we'll start with the home side.
San Marino have not won one of their 57 qualifiers to date, with their best results being two draws. They've been beaten 55 times, including their Group C opener against Azerbaijan. It would be a huge surprise for Pierangelo Manzaroli's men to emerge with the three points this evening.
Michael O'Neill's men started their qualifying campaign with a battling result against Czech Republic, holding them to a goalless draw away from home. That point could prove to be vital come the end, but Ireland will now have their sights set on a victory against the minnows San Marino this evening.
Good evening and welcome to the live commentary of the World Cup qualifying clash between Northern Ireland and San Marino at Windsor Park.
