So that's it from me. A welcome boost for Newcastle but at a cost against a disappointing Wigan side. Join us again at Goal.com for our live text commentaries on all the latest games from across Europe, including the Premier League, Champions League and Europa League. Until next time, this is Theo Squires signing off. Thank you and good night.
Next up for Roberto Martinez's Wigan is Harry Redknapp's QPR in what is already looking like a six-pointer at this early stage of the season.
A night to remember for 19-year-old Gael Bigirimana as he came off the bench to score an absolute screamer for his first ever Premier League goal.
Wigan meanwhile drop down a position to 16th with Aston Villa gaining a place at their expense.
Newcastle stay 14th and move level on points with Fulham. They take on the West London outfit in their next league match.
The win comes at a cost though for manager Alan Pardew, with Demba Ba, whose two goals pretty much secured victory, and Davide Santon both coming off injured and adding to the Magpies' ever-growing injury list.
Newcastle get the three points in what was a comfortable win for the Magpies.
90' + 5'
FT Newcastle 3-0 Wigan
90' + 4'
Kone jinxs his way through the Newcastle defence but his shot from an acute angle goes straight into the side netting.
90' + 1'
Four minutes added on...
Ferguson does really well to fire in a cross to Cisse but his shot is straight at Al-Habsi.
Corner to Newcastle but it comes to nothing and Wigan get the ball clear.
Ba could be ruled out for a few weeks if that is as bad as it looks. Could be good news for Papiss Cisse though. He might actually hit the target or stay onside if he's the lone striker once more.
Demba Ba's gone done clutching his hamstring. The last thing Alan Pardew wanted or needed. It's going to be ten vs ten for the last four minutes.
Awful positioning from Cisse. In so much space but he wanders offside as Demba Ba feeds him the ball. If he'd stayed onside he'd have been one-on-one.
Franco Di Santo
Wigan SUB McManaman ON Di Santo OFF
What a waste. Wigan pass it amongst themselves on the edge of the Newcastle box, then play it all the way back to the goalkeeper.
Free-kick to Wigan after Marveaux's challenge on James McCarthy.
McManaman about to come on for Wigan.
Ferguson has pushed back to left-back since the introduction of Ameobi.
Yellow Card Sammy Ameobi
And within seconds of coming on Sammy Ameobi is booked for a push on Ronnie Stam.
Newcastle SUB Sammy Ameobi ON Jonas Gutierrez OFF
Wigan haven't given up. Stam crosses the ball into Kone, but Krul just gets to it first and punches it away.
Assist Sylvain Marveaux
Marveaux proved the pass to Bigirimana.
Goal Gael Bigirimana
3-0! Bigirimana! His first goal in the Premier League.
Bigirimana cuts in and curls in a delightful shot from outside the area with his left foot.
Cisse unleashes another shot over after cutting in onto his left foot. I don't think he's had a single shot so far tonight that hasn't gone into the stands behind the goal.
Yellow Card Franco Di Santo
Apologies, it appears Di Santo was not booked for dissent earlier on in the game, after the decision to award Newcastle a penalty. He has been booked for dissent now though.
It's cleared. Wigan counter attack but Ferguson stops Di Santo in his tracks.
Corner to Newcastle won by Anita...
Great chipped through ball from Anita to Cisse but the striker lashes the ball over from just outside the area. He's desperate to get on the score-sheet but it just won't go in for him so far tonight, or indeed so far this season.
Marveaux has impressed for Newcastle so far tonight as the two sides exchange possession.
Newcastle are sitting very deep here. They're started the second half poorly and Wigan are playing a lot better. This game isn't over yet.
Looks like Ferguson has gone to play left-wing, while Gutierrez has moved to left-back.
Wigan have started the second half a lot brighter but they still have a lot of work to do if they are to get back into this. The next goal will be crucial.
Newcastle SUB Santon OFF Ferguson ON - The Italian goes off injured. Looks like he's hurt his groin.
Di Santo fires yet another shot. I think someone needs to remind him he's playing football, not rugby.
While Caldwell OFF Lopez ON for Wigan
Tiote OFF, Bigiramana ON for Newcastle
So each side makes a change at half-time...
Alan Pardew has obviously had enough of Tiote's wayward shooting. Or more likely it's to avoid the midfielder getting another booking. If he had been booked he would miss the next game through suspension.
Wigan need to definitely show something else after the break if they are to get anything from this game. Newcastle are dominating and deservedly lead. Demba Ba has been superb. Join us for the second half in five minutes time.
Meanwhile Newcastle only need another five goals to leapfrog Fulham into 13th place.
Good news for Aston Villa fans. As it stands you over-take Wigan without even kicking a ball. The joys of goal difference.
Ba's two goals see him move to joint-top of the Premier Leage leading goalscorers chart. What are the chances of him being the sold leader in an hour's time?
Demba Ba's two first half goals have put Newcastle in a rather solid position at St James' Park. 10-man Wigan, who had Manyor Figueroa sent off early on, are lucky it is not more.
45' + 2'
Half-time Newcastle 2-0 Wigan
45' + 2'
Tiote again shoots from distance. Tiote again shoots over.
45' + 1'
Two minutes added on...
No they can't. Kone header blocked and Newcastle clear.
Kone wins a corner for Wigan. Can they pull back a goal just before the interval.
Di Santo shoots harmlessly over from distance in a rare Wigan attack.
Wigan trying desperately to hold onto the ball but are are struggling to break down a steady Newcastle back-line.
Tiote wants a goal. He has another shot from distance after being fed by Santon, by like his effort inside the first minute it is off-target.
Marveaux goes for goal but it bends just wide.
Caldwell is on his final warning here after a late challenge on Demba Ba outside the area.
Marveaux goes on a great solo run. He shows a good burst of pace and his shot is pushed behind for a corner.
Unsurprisingly it's been all Newcastle since the red card. They continue to flood the box with crosses looking for Ba, but Wigan are coping with them so far. Just.
Yellow Card Gary Caldwell
Gary Caldwell booked for a late challenge from behind on Demba Ba.
Wigan look unable to cope with Newcastle at the moment. The Magpies are flooding the box with crosses. While Wigan are clearing their lines, each time they just give it straight back to Alan Pardew's men.
SUB: Jordi Gomez OFF James McArthur ON
Goal Demba Ba
2-0! Santon shoots from distance. Al-Habsi saves it but parries it straight to the grateful Demba Ba who taps it in for his second goal of the night.
James McArthur is being prepared for Wigan.
Ba picks out Marveaux on the left-hand side. He tries to pick out Cisse but Al-Habsi gathers the cross.
Chaotic few minutes at St James' Park.
Yellow Card Jean Beausejour
Beausejour also went into the book for dissent.
Penalty Goal Demba Ba
GOAL! 1-0 Newcastle. Ba scores the penalty.
Assist - Papiss Cisse.
Red Card Maynor Figueroa
And Wigan are down to 10 men. Figueroa sent off for his challenge on Cisse which led to the penalty. Di Santo also booked for dissent.
PENALTY to Newcastle!
End-to-end stuff here at St James' Park so far in what has been an explosive start to the game.
Anita's corner reaches Ba but his header is blocked and Wigan get it away.
Corner to Newcastle...
At the other end Newcastle have a throw-in right by the corner flag.
Ronnie Stam fires over after Jean Beausejour's corner is cleared. Tim Krul takes the goal-kick.
Anita heads it behind for a corner.
Wigan free-kick in a dangerous position here...
Good save from Krul after Di Santo bends an effort at goal from just outside the area after a short Wigan free-kick.
Papiss Cisse seems to playing on the right-wing tonight, with Demba Ba upfront. Marveaux and Anita sit ahead of Tiote.
20 seconds in and Newcastle are showing their intent right from the start. Tiote, who has only ever scored once for the Toon, rifles a shot just wide from 30 yards.
Newcastle kick-off and we're off...
The team's are out and lining up. Kick-off is just seconds away.
STAT: Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse have never both scored in a game that they have both started for Newcastle.
STAT: Newcastle United have lost only one of their last 24 Premier League home games played on a Monday
Newcastle and Wigan have had their injury problems in recent weeks, and with them sitting just two points above the relegation zone, both sides will be desperate for a win.
Five minutes until kick-off and the stadium is filling, but it's looking far from a sell-out. Newcastle's poor form, the bitterly cold weather and the game being on television may have put people off coming, while about 100 hardy Wigan fans have made the journey to the North East.
Shaun Maloney and Franco Di Santo were among the goalscorers the last time these two sides met however, when Wigan emerged 4-0 victors.
Newcastle won this fixture last season thanks to Yohan Cabaye's solitary strike. The Frenchman is absent through injury though today as Alan Pardew's side's injury crisis worsens.
Kick-off in just over 10 minutes on this cold December night. Stay tuned for all the action.
Wigan's bench is as follows; Pollitt, McManaman, McArthur, Boselli, Fyvie, Lopez, Golobart
And now Wigan's starting XI; Al Habsi, Kone, McCarthy, Caldwell, Jones, Di Santo, Gomez, Boyce, Beausejour, Stam, Figueroa
While Alan Pardew has the following players to call upon from the bench; Harper, Tavernier, Ferguson, Bigirimana, Sammy Ameobi, Shola Ameobi, Ranger
Newcastle's team is as follows: Krul, Santon, Williamson, Simpson, Coloccini, Tiote, Gutierrez, Anita, Marveaux, Cisse, Ba
Both sides currently sit level with Aston Villa on 14 points in 14th and 15th place respectively. While Newcastle cannot move up any higher in the league table, victory would put them level on points with Fulham. Victory for Wigan would see them overtake the Magpies.
Good evening and welcome to Goal.com's live coverage of tonight's Premier League clash between Newcastle United and Wigan Athletic. I'm Theo Squires and I'll be guiding you through the action tonight as the Magpies look to end a run of six league games, while the Latics are searching for their first ever win at St James' Park.
