Might as well have got himself a ticket in the stands for the first half, a traffic cone placed in the middle of the goal would've done the same job. Called on a couple of times in the second, but was comfortable
Didn't have anything to do in the first half and was replaced for the second by Williamson.
Dominated Cole without breaking a sweat, gets into good positions and makes well-timed interventions. Rarely has to go to ground and dealt with most balls lobbed forward by West Ham.
After a quiet first half, was given a little bit more to think about with Obinna's introduction. Handled him well in truth and looking like a very good right-back.
Continues to impress at left-back for Newcastle, is a good defender and makes a good contribution going forward. One time skipping past two West Ham players.
Good reading of the play to feed the ball into Best for Newcastle's opening goal but picked the wrong option when breaking forward later in the half, playing the ball left to Lovenkrands when Best was wide open to his right. Made up for this at the brink of half-time, picking his spot to find the bottom right-hand corner to give Newcastle a 3-0 lead before picking out Best with a first time pass to put the youngster in for his hat-trick.
Couple of dangerous early balls into the box for Best and his smart free-kick lead to Newcastle extending their lead towards the end of the first half. Left unmarked for Newcastle's fifth and picked out Lovenkrands with a precise pass into the near post area.
Bullish performance from a beast of a man, so composed on the ball and made some good passes forward. Limped off late in the game.
Simply the best. Put himself about and almost found an opening in the initial minutes. Headed wide his next chance but made it third time lucky with a well-taken goal in the 18th minute. Didn't leave it long to grab a second, thumping the ball home after a cute free-kick routine. Completed his hat-trick in the second half before being taken off to a standing ovation for Ranger.
At times completely anonymous, but made a good run into the left-hand side of the box and drilled the ball across the face of the goal for Newcastle's second. Got in on the goalscoring act in the second half with the simplest of finishes at the front post.
The crowd got on top of the Englishman from the off and he clearly didn't enjoy this scrutiny, scuffing a number of his clearances and conceding five.
Put himself about in the first half but to little effect and was brought off at the start of the second half for Behrami.
Good early intervention on Best when it looked as if the Newcastle forward was through in the penalty area. This wasn't to last though, and it was his scuffed clearance that gave the ball to Nolan for Newcastle's third.
T. Ben Haim
Looked off the pace, was repeatedly left trailing by Gutierrez and Enrique. Tortured by Gutierrez in particular.
One of West Ham's more adventurous players, which sums up their performance. Left Barton completely unmarked for Newcastle's fifth but the game was long since over by that point.
Completely dominated by Best, who hadn't scored a goal for Newcastle before this evening. Says everything you need to know about his performance.
Started his evening on the left flank and ended it in the middle. Didn't enjoy success playing either position and was hooked by his manager in the second half.
Had a decent shot from distance in the first half that gave Harper something to do. Picked out Obinna with a good pass in the 79th minute but he squandered the chance.
Has a lovely touch and good control of the football but was dropping off Cole to collect the ball and couldn't effect proceedings higher up the pitch. Was withdrawn at half-time in favour of Obinna.
Didn't see much of the ball and couldn't blame West Ham's lack of firepower on him.
Looked lively at times on the right flank in the first half and was moved into a more central position in the second half as Grant switched his side around.
- 26 T. Krul
- 14 J. Perch
Came on for Taylor at the start of the second half. Almost equally as untroubled as the man he replaced.
- 10 W. Routledge
Replaced Gutierrez with 25 minutes left to play. Skipped down the left flank before supplying Nolan, who in turn picked out Ranger when the forward fluffed his lines.
- 8 D. Guthrie
On for hat-trick hero Best and made an absolute hash of a one-on-one with Green in the 73rd minute after being played in by Nolan. Justified Pardew's decision to start Best, just in case there were still any doubters.
- 31 R. Boffin
- 2 W. Reid
- 18 J. Spector
Started the second half in place of Kovac and played on the right of the midfield. Was more forward thinking than the man he replaced, but lacked quality, sending his first shot high and wide.
- 12 P. Barrera
Replaced Noble and thought he had a late consolation goal after a slip by Harper, but it was chalked off by the referee.
