Norwich will go home feeling a little unlucky that they never got anything from the game. As for Newcastle, that is now nine wins in 13 home games this calendar year.
Both goalkeepers when called upon were equally impressive but Cabaye, Ben Arfa and Hoolahan were fantastic.
Fulltime. Newcastle win 1-0 courtesy of Demba Ba's first half strike. The visitor's played well at times and for the last 10 minutes or so were in the ascendency but the hosts held on. It could have been two but Papiss Cisse missed a first half penalty as Chris Hughton goes home empty-handed on his first return to the Sports Direct Arena since his dismissal two years ago.

Cabaye releases Obertan who shoots into the arms of Ruddy. The goalkeeper inadvertedly puts the ball over the line for a corner.

Norwich are playing with a front four as they try and earn a point. Harper and Jackson go together again and the former gets studded in the chest for his trouble but he smothers well again.
Simeon Jackson gets involved for the first time but Harper smothers well. Norwich are well on top now. Stoppage time is four minutes. The visitors have just been given a lifeline.
Yellow CardCheikh Tiote
Jonny Howson scythes Tiote down as he tries to take everybody on in his own half. Howson is booked and Harper has a word in the Ivory Coast international's ear. Then Tiote himself jumps straight into Michael Turner and earns a yellow himself.
Yellow CardJonny Howson
The resulting corner sails over everybody and out for a goal kick.
Hatem Ben Arfa
Holt plays a superb ball into the box on the counter but Perch gets back and nullifies the threat with a terrific sliding clearance.
Chance for Newcastle! Demba Ba slips as the ball breaks to him rather fortunately but he can only put the ball into Ruddy's grateful grasp.
But not frustrated as Holt gets underneath a fantastic cross but the ball goes back the way it came.
Cabaye and Jonas Gutierrez fouled in quick succession as Chris Hughton's side become a little flustered.
Obertan's pace is causing the Norwich defence some problems since coming on and finds Cabaye but his shot is blocked.
Surman rises highest in the box as Norwich look buoyed by Holt's arrival but his header goes wide.
Chance for Cisse! Again! He heads over and that is his last effort at goal as he is replaced by Gabriel Obertan, whilst Grant Holt comes on for Steve Morison.
Collison! Snodgrass and Perch collide in mid air as both have eyes only for the ball. A clash of legs as both go to volley clear. The Newcastle player looks like he has come off the worst yet the free kick goes to Norwich.
Vurnon Anita dinks a ball into the box and fins Ben Arfa. The ball bounces awkwardly and is cleared for a corner. The resulting set-piece sees Williamson head into the arms of Ruddy.
A brilliant pass by James Perch sets up Cisse but the striker lashes a shot from out wide but he does not get the connection it needed and Ruddy easily claims.
Chance for Norwich. Morison nods down for Hoolahan but his left-footed half-volley goes wide of Harper's goal.
Yohan Cabaye has an effort which was always rising from the moment it left his boot.
Chances galore for Newcastle. Ben Arfa drives a low shot goalbound and Ruddy pulls of a brilliant low save. The resulting corner sees Steven Taylor heading just over.
Hoolahan has been instrumental throughout the game, pulling the strings in midfield for the visitors. If Norwich are to pull a goal back then it will come through him.
Norwich claim a corner and get one as Snodgrass tries to steer an effort goalwards. Santon heads Turner's header off the line.
Cabaye with another long free kick into the box and finds Williamson who times his run to perfection but can not direct his header goalbound.
Steve Harper has his first real save to make as Andrew Surman races on to a through ball by Hoolahan and does well to block his shot.
Second half back underway and Newcastle go straight on the attack. Norwich weather the storm and the ball is cleared down the line.
Will Newcastle rue that missed chance and will it give Norwich an incentive to get themselves back into this? Either way, both managers' halftime team-talk has just got interesting.
Halftime at the Sports Direct Arena. Newcastle go into the break one goal to the good courtesy of Demba Ba's one-on-one finish but it should have been two but Papiss Cisse blazed his penalty over the bar.

Penalty miss!!! Cisse fires over. Ben Arfa was initially going to take it but gave it to the out-of-sorts striker who blasts miles over.
Penalty to Newcastle!!! Williamson is pushed in the back by Steve Morison in the box and the referee has an easy decision.
This time it's Cabaye trying to find Ba with a deep, long ball but the ball scampers away from the Senegal striker as he tries to get on the end of it.
Chance for Newcastle! Ben Arfa and Ba who find each other again. This time the former slides a reverse pass into the path of Ba but the ball slips away and into Ruddy's path. The Frenchman is on fire at the moment.
Great pass and move play by the visitors. Hoolahan is making them tick and he picks up a pass from Jonny Howson who then plays in the on-rushing Russell Martin but the cross goes for a corner. From that set-piece, Cisse does brilliantly in the corner to get his side out of trouble.
Ben Arfa tries a similar ball through the defence like he did for the opening goal but this time the Norwich back four are wary of it and boot it clear.
Santon gets down Norwich's right-hand side, cuts the ball back for Cisse. The Senegal international slips over the ball but it falls for Cabaye who blasts wide from six-yards on his weaker left foot.
Chance for Newcastle. Steven Taylor rises highest and nods back looking for his centre-back partner Williamson but Norwich just get their lines cleared in time.
Vurnon Anita crosses into the box. It is a deep one, aiming for Cisse but Leon Barnett nods clear for a corner.
Clearance!!! Hoolahan's cross into the box almost falls for Snodgrass in the box. The ball comes back out and again the former crosses to the latter and his header is cleared off the line by Mike Williamson.
Momentum in the game has changed in the home side's favour after Ba's third goal in seven days.
Davide Santon lobs a reverse pass into an on-rushing Cabaye but the latter can not extend his leg as far as he would like and the ball rolls harmlessly out of play for a goal kick.
AssistHatem Ben Arfa
Goal!!! Demba Ba. The Senegal international is played in behind the Norwich defence by a delightful long through ball by Hatem Ben Arfa and he fires past John Ruddy with ease.
Alan Pardew is in the stands to sit out the remainder of his two-match touchline ban and is seeing his side work slowly back into the game as Yohan Cabaye has a cross easily dealt with.
