The Tynesiders have been frustrated domestically but, with four points from two European games so far, could put a foot in the next round with victory against the Belgians

Tim Krul, Fabricio Coloccini and Steven Taylor all played some part in Sunday's Tyne-Wear derby after spending time on the sidelines. Having missed recent matches, it would be no surprise to see the trio all feature again on Thursday.

Alan Pardew has confirmed that Cheikh Tiote will play, considering he is now suspended domestically for three games, following his sending off in Sunday’s derby.

Midfielder Haris Vuckic, who has played in two of Newcastle’s Europa League games this season, ruptured cruciate ligaments in his knee playing for their Under 21 side, and will not return until next season. Rob Elliot (groin), Dan Gosling and Ryan Taylor (both knee) are also long-term absentees for the Magpies.

For Club Brugge, Jesper Jorgensen featured as a sub in their 4-1 defeat at OH Leuven at the weekend, and should be fit to start at St James’ Park.

Forward Mohamed Tchite is a doubt though could play a part, and the game may also come too soon for former West Brom defender Ryan Donk. Thomas Meunier, Jim Larsen, Niki Zimling and Fredrik Stenman are all out.

  • Newcastle and Club Brugge have never met before in European competition.
  • However, Newcastle have an exceptional record against the Belgian sides they have played, winning all six of their encounters against them, and scoring an average of over three goals a game.
  • On the flip side, Brugge have never won a game in England, playing 10, drawing two and losing eight.
  • Club Brugge have reached the final of the Europa League (then Uefa Cup) once, losing to English opposition - Liverpool - 4-3 on aggregate in the 1975-76 season.
  • Newcastle have not lost at home in this competition for 23 matches (winning 18, drawing five), dating back to the 1996-97 quarter-finals, when they were defeated by French side Monaco.
  • Newcastle have played 100 games in all Uefa competitions, winning 58, drawing 18 and losing 24.
  • Having drawn 0-0 with Maritimo, and defeating Bordeaux 3-0, Newcastle are one of just five sides in the 12 groups yet to concede a goal.
  • Newcastle players Danny Simpson (pictured above right), Demba Ba and Cheikh Tiote have all had spells playing in Belgium during their careers.

Ameobi is something of a cult hero on Tyneside, having made almost 350 appearances for the Magpies, and the game against Brugge is one in which he’ll like to start and make an impact in, especially after the weekend disappointment of being substituted early as a result of Cheikh Tiote's dismissal at the Stadium of Light.

Club Brugge signed Colombian forward Carlos Bacca in the January transfer window last season for the paltry sum of £1 million, yet he has proved a revelation ever since, scoring goals consistently in his nine months with the club to date. This term, Bacca has nine goals to his name, including a strike in the Europa League against Maritimo last time out.
Whilst Newcastle haven’t started the league campaign as strongly as they were looking in the last, their form in the Europa League so far has been good, underlined by their convincing 3-0 victory over Bordeaux last time out. As well as having a number of injuries in their ranks, Brugge come into the game having been convincingly beaten at the weekend away from home, and it would be no surprise to see a similar outcome at St James’ Park on Thursday.
