Napoli 2-0 Roma: Juan own goal and Marek Hamsik strike seals victory for hosts

Visitors fail to impress in Stadio San Paolo...

Napoli gained a vital win over Roma at the Stadio San Paolo thanks to a strike from Marek Hamsik and a late own goal from Juan.

Napoli coach Walter Mazzarri continued with a three-man defence while Hamsik and Ezequiel Lavezzi supported the in-form Edinson Cavani.

Meanwhile, Claudio Ranieri was looking to keep the up their winning streak after victories over Inter and CFR Cluj. 'The Tinkerman' gave Cicinho a rare start, while captain Francesco Totti was joined by Marco Borriello in attack. Mirko Vucinic could only find a spot on the bench.

Napoli were looking to go level on points with Milan if they defeated the visitors and they started the match with far more attacking intent than Roma.

Andrea Dossena had an early opportunity, but his first time effort flew over the bar and moments later Lavezzi had a good effort saved by Bogdan Lobont in the Roma goal.

Despite these early chances it was Roma who were dominating possession, but they could not put together any attacks of purpose and Napoli were always looking dangerous when they ventured forward.

Roma did get some reward for their dominance in the midfield with Cicinho playing a ball over from the right into the path of John Arne Riise, whose chest control was exemplary but his volley much less so, as it flew over the bar.

Both goalkeepers had a few other saves to make as the half wore on, but no one could break the deadlock before half-time.

In the second period it was again Napoli who had the better chances with Lavezzi the main instigator. The little Argentinean was a constant thorn in Roma's side and nearly gave his team the lead with a free-kick, thought it went just over the crossbar.

Cavani who has been excellent so far this season was nowhere to be seen for much of the game and when he did have chances they were spurned much to the displeasure of the Napoli faithful.

But the breakthrough was made by Hamsik, as Dossena rampaged down the left. He gave the ball to the Slovakian whose volley whistled into the net, Lobont in the Roma goal did get a hand to it but the shot was too powerful.

Not long after Napoli got their second thanks to a Juan own goal. Hugo Campagnaro squared the ball to Cavani and his shot came off the defender before going into the back of the net.

Napoli have now moved up to second spot in Serie A, level with Milan, but may drop to third depending on the result of tonight's Derby d'Italia, while Roma have dropped into the relegation zone and are only one point ahead of Udinese who prop up the table.
