Nurnberg - Bayern Munich Preview: Jupp Heynckes' men aim for their fourth consecutive Bundesliga victory

Bongarts

The Bavarians have fallen further behind Jurgen Klopp's side in the title race in recent weeks and the pressure will be on should the league leaders overcome Stuttgart on Friday

Dieter Hecking will be without attackers Alexander Esswein and Christian Eigler who both miss out through injury. The team is otherwise unchanged from the side that lost 1-0 to Stuttgart last weekend.

Bayern Munich continue to count defenders Breno and Daniel Van Buyten among their absentees, though the later is undergoing rehabilitation following a broken metatarsal.

Bastian Schweinsteiger could make his return from a lengthy spell on the sidelines but it remains likely that Luiz Gustavo will make way for Anatoliy Tymoshchuk in midfield. Rafinha could also be used to give Philip Lahm a rest ahead of the second leg of their Champions League semi-final.

DID YOU KNOW?
  • After a run of three consecutive wins, Nurnberg have lost their last three Bundesliga games.
  • Der Club remain unbeaten in their last three home games against Bayern Munich
  • Only Kaiserslautern have scored fewer goals than Dieter Hecking's side in the Bundesliga this season. With a total of just 25, Mario Gomez has only scored two less.
  • Bayern Munich boast the Bundesliga's most potent attack with an impressive 66 goals in their 27 games so far this season.
  • The Bavarians have not lost in their last eight matches against Nurnberg in all competitions.
  • Bayern have only won six of their 10 league matches since the turn of the year. This form has seen them drop further behind reigning champions Borussia Dortmund.

Players to watch

T. Simons

The 35-year-old defensive midfielder will need to use all his experience to help his side deal with the threat of the Bayern Munich attaking quartet. If Nurnberg are to take anything positive from the game they will need to stay tight at the back, and Simons will be integral to that. By closing down the Bayern attackers and breaking up the play he could well prove to be the key for Der Club to take a much-needed positive result.

M. Gómez

Position: Attacker

The Bundesliga’s leading goal scorer has netted just two fewer times this season than the whole of the Nurnberg team. Gomez is a real predator, he has shown that he can pop up at any point and put the ball in the back of the net. Der Club will need to keep the imposing striker quiet for the full 90 minutes, though that will not guarantee that they will be able to keep him off the scoresheet.

Editor's Prediction

Despite not losing to the Bayern in their last three home games, Nurnberg will find it difficult to resist the Bavarians this time around. Jupp Heynckes' men have hit a great run of form at the perfect time as they look to catch Borussia Dortmund at the top of the league. Should BVB fail to win at Stuttgart then it it is unlikely that there will be any other result than a resounding win for Bayern in this game.
