Commentary

Full time in this Group D World Cup Qualifier. Ireland make it two wins in as many games as they record an eventually comfortable 3-1 win away at Moldova, win James McClean grabbing a brace to compliment Shane Long's opener. The home side netted an equaliser just before the break which made things nervous for the Boys in Green for a portion of the play, but O'Neil's men eventually outclassed their opponents to claim the victory. Thanks for joining us, see you next time.
90' + 2' Four minutes of added time have been allocated by the referee here and Ireland are going to see out this important win. Moldova have hardly adhered themselves to anyone without a stock in the result tonight as their reaction to the inevitable loss has been petty and full of indiscipline.
A. Dedov
Yellow Card

90' Yellow card Alexandru Dedov
A. Gaţcan
Yellow Card
Moldova
90' Gatcan, meanwhile, goes into the book for his part in the rabble.
J. Walters
Yellow Card
Republic of Ireland
90' A massive melee ensues now as Walters is basically studded in the chest by Dedov, resulting in all the players rushing in to confront each other as the Stoke man takes offence to the challenge. He receives a yellow card for his reaction, which was understandable.
I. Bugaiov
Yellow Card
Moldova
88' The yellow cards are coming thick and fast for Moldova now and the latest guilty party to show a lack of discipline is the goalscorer, Buaiov, who needlessly scythes down Coleman. The Ireland captain has been the victim of quite a few of those poor challenges tonight.
E. O'Kane
W. Hoolahan
Republic of Ireland
86' For Ireland, the impressive Hoolahan comes off for Eunan O'Kane, as the visitors just tighten things up in these latter stages.
85' Five minutes to go and Ireland look on course to end their international break with six points out of six recorded. Quite a result considering the abusive musings surrounding their performance against Georgia three days ago, which shows you that it is wins that matter in these qualifiers more than anything else.
E. Sidorenco
G. Andronic
Moldova
83' Third and final change for Moldova as Eugen Sidorenco replaces Andronic.
D. Meyler
J. McCarthy
Republic of Ireland
82' McCarthy is still getting to full fitness this season after a string of niggling injuries, so it is no surprise to see him withdrawn now that the three points is in the bag for Ireland. His replacement in the middle of the park will be Hull's David Meyler.
A. Cojocari
Yellow Card
Moldova
80' As Ireland continue to dominate proceedings now, Moldova are starting to show signs of real frustration out there. This is summed up by Cojocari going in extremely late on McClean inside the half of the home side, which generates a less-than-impressed reaction from the Irish winger.
78' Duffy, who was at fault for Moldova's goal in the first half, picks up the ball along the backline whilst under no pressure but very nearly sells Coleman short with a pass down to the right wing. Luckily for Ireland, their captain just manages to pip Dedov to the ball to save the blushes of his team-mate.
S. Coleman
Assist
Republic of Ireland
76' Coleman, Ireland's assist machine, adds another to his collection to put this game to bed.
J. McClean
Goal
Republic of Ireland
76' GOOOOOOAAAALLLL FOR IRELAND! That should be game over! Hoolahan threads a neat pass down the right wing for Coleman, who leaves his marker for dead with a penetrating run to the byline before whipping a low cross into the centre of the box. McClean is positioned perfectly to cushion a finish home for his second of the match! Three-one.
75' Ireland actually look the more likely team to go ahead and grab the fourth and decisive goal here, with Moldova struggling to even string two or three passes together. O'Neil's men oozing a lot more confidence out there now.
73' Moldova don't look like they have much about them going forward in ther attempts to gain another equaliser here. The first equaliser came so much out of the blue that you struggle to think how they will get another, apart from another Irish mistake at the back, naturally.
71' The relief for Ireland was there for all to see as all the players ran to near the corner flag to celebrate with McClean. Tonight was a cracking opportunity to take the initiative in Group D after Wales' draw earlier on this evening, and with Austria currently drawing 2-2 away at Serbia, the win will be even more sweeter. If they can hold on, of course.
J. Walters
Assist
Republic of Ireland
69' A neat assist from Walters.
J. McClean
Goal
Republic of Ireland
69' GOOOOAAAAAALLL! GOOOOAAAALLL FOR IRELAND! The visitors reclaim the lead! McCarthy moves into an advanced area around 20 yards out and smashes a strike into the box which falls to the feet of Walters, who just nudges possession into the path of McClean. The Irishman shows some excellent composure to guide a precision strike into the right corner just past the goalkeeper! Two-one.
67' Hoolahan comes deep to see a bit more of the ball and then passes out wide to Coleman. The Ireland captain links up with McClean positively with the winger subsequently cutting into the centre of the pitch on his left foot, but is really crowded in those areas with all the Moldova shirts, meaning he has to revert back to Whelan.
65' Moldova have barely posed a threat in this second half so far, but the worrying thing for Ireland is that this was the case in the first period too and they ended up allowing the home side to score out of nowhere.
C. O'Dowda
S. Long
Republic of Ireland
63' O'Neil, in turn, makes his opening substitution and it is a forced one as Long appears to have picked up an unfortunate hamstring injury. Ireland's goalscorer trudges off the pitch and he will be replaced by Callum O'Dowda, who makes his competitive debut for the Boys in Green. McClean will go to the right wing and Walters will move up top.
E. Cebotaru
E. Zasavitchi
Moldova
61' Second alteration of the match from Moldova, as Eugeniu Cebotaru enters the action to replace Zasavitchi.
60' Excellent work from Zasavitchi, who does really well to heap pressure on Coleman and Randolph near the byline. A miscommunication from the Irish duo eventually sees the Everton man clear behind for a corner-kick, which generates a cheer of expectance from the home crowd.
58' A decent period of sustained possession for Ireland at the moment as they look to break down this Moldova defence. The home side are managing to clear quite a lot of balls into the box, but they are only succeeding in handing the advantage straight back to O'Neil's charges.
56' The Irish fans are typically attempting to catalyse a response from their players here by going through their sizeable songbook, but the passion from the stands is struggling to make its way down to the pitch as Ireland as in desperate need of some real inspiration.
54' Coleman goes on another marauding run down the right-hand side and manages to hit the byline before clipping a teasing cross to the back post for McClean, but the resulting header on goal goes straight down the throat of the Moldovan goalkeeper, Calancea.
52' Scrappy is certainly the word to describe the proceedings in the match at the moment as neither side has really found a flow to their game since the break. Ireland in particular are relying on pumping high balls up top without anyone really showing for possession in the final third. Improvements needed.
S. Coleman
Yellow Card
Republic of Ireland
50' First yellow card of the match now and it comes in the latest entry in the duel between Coleman and Dedov, who have been at each other's throats since pretty much the opening whistle. The Irishman is the first player punished as he cynically pulls back the Moldovan winger.
48' That equaliser for Moldova so close to half-time will certainly be a kick in the teeth for Ireland, but Martin O'Neil will certainly have pulled no punches in his assessment of the first half performance in his team talk. After such a perfect start through Long, they have been too complacent as time has ran on.
46' We are back under way in Stadionul Zimbru!
Half-time in this World Cup qualifier. Ireland made a perfect start to this clash and netted within two minutes through Long, but a failure to capitalise on their further dominance opened up the door for Moldova, who scored an equaliser in 'smash and grab' style moments before thr break though Bugaiov. One-one between these two nations, and a perfectly balanced battle before the second period.
A. Gaţcan
Assist
Moldova
45' + 1' The Moldova captain shows he can pass as well as foul, as he assists the equaliser with a cracking through-ball.
I. Bugaiov
Goal
Moldova
45' + 1' GOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLL FOR MOLDOVA! An equaliser from absolutely nowhere! Gatcan latches on to a bouncing ball inside his own half and then clips a cracking pass in behind the defence for Bugaiov, who shows Duffy a clean pair of heels before running through on the keeper to slide a strike into the corner! One-one, but what on earth was going on in that Irish defence? They were far too high up the pitch!
44' Gatcan certainly isn't afraid to stick the boot in whenever he feels necessary, and commits yet another foul, this time in a dangerous position 25 yards out on Walters. McClean is tasked with the resulting set-piece, but his radar is a bit off which results in an attempt going the wrong side of the crossbar.
42' Hoolahan lifts a lovely pass over the top of the Moldova defence for McClean, who opens up his stride with a signature, speedy dash towards the opposition penalty area. The West Brom winger goes for goal and ends up blazing over the bar, which frustrates Walters who was begging for a cross to the back post for a tap-in.
40' Five minutes to go in this first half and the game has hit a bit of a lull in the second portion of the opening 45. Ireland are indeed very comfortable at the back, but as long as the scoreline remains tightly in their favour at 1-0, the nerves will always be lingering that Moldova could potentially get back into this.
38' Long is working ever so hard up front and wins yet another free-kick. This is from a far deeper position, though, and the set-piece is over Duffy's head at the far corner of the box.
V. Golovatenco
I. Armaş
Moldova
36' Armas cannot continue and is replaced by Victor Golovatenco.
36' Hoolahan lays off for Whelan, but his thump is blocked. Moldova's counter is quickly halted.
34' It all gets a bit scrappy on the edge of the Irish box, but Hoolahan knocks the ball away and McClean is off and running. Long chases the subsequemt pass and wins a free-kick from Igor Armas on the edge of the area. The Moldovan looks in pain, but this is a great position for the visitors.
32' Ireland push on again down the left, but Long's touch is a poor one and the ball runs behind for a Moldova goal kick. He's soon back chasing again, though...
30' Whelan's down now, receiving treatment, but appears to be alright.
29' CHANCE! Coleman's cross is dummied for Hoolahan on the far side, he dallies, waiting for the onrushing Glenn Whelan, whose shot blazes high past the near post.
28' Vitalie Bordian reaches the corner flag and attempts a cross back into the centre, but can only swing his delivery behind for a goal kick.
27' There's been a frantic pace to the opening half-hour here in Moldova, with both sides pressing high when not in possession. Ireland remain dominant, though.
25' Now McClean dashes forward and delivers, but Jon Walters is challenged at the back post and Moldova clear again.
25' It's Stephen Ward's turn to get forward on the left, but he initially ignores McClean to win a throw-in, and then misreads the West Brom man's return pass.
23' Coleman thought he was in again on the right to centre, but he's caught offside. The right-back is Ireland's biggest attacking threat at this stage.
22' Moldova finally have a first effort, through Andrei Cojocari, but it's a tame one and rolls wide, evading Igor Bugaev's stretched leg.
20' Coleman takes a throw-in by the right-hand corner flag and then works an angle to reach the byline, winning a corner. The delivery is floated to Shane Duffy at the back post, but he concedes a free-kick for climbing on his marker.
19' Moldova are trying to build some possession and regain a foothold in this game, but Long quickly picks off a slack pass to launch another attack...
17' Coleman is having some joy on the right and crosses for Long to head at goal, but a home defender is across to block.
16' An Ireland attack breaks down on the ege of the area, but the visitors are quickly on the move again.
15' Ireland in comfortable possession back in defence.
12' McClean has made a bright start for Ireland and after firing straight at the goalkeeper with his previous effort, he now scrambles a second attempt wide of the far post.
8' Long is involved in the action positively again for Ireland here as he picks up possession in midfield before turning sharply to drive towards the opposition goal. He is thwarted by Gatcan, who comes in from behind to claw the ball away and is actually lucky not to give the foul away on the Irishman.
6' That goal for Long ends a lengthy drought of 18 games without finding the back of the net for club or country, but the confidence is flowing now for the Southampton man. This time, he rises above his marker to flick-on to the feet of Hoolahan inside the box, but the Moldovan defence manage to clear before a threat on goal is made.
4' Well, what a start to the match for Ireland, who received quite a lot of criticism for their performance on Thursday against Georgia in Dublin. They only managed to claim a very fortunate 1-0 win in that clash, but it looks already like a much more positive night for Martin O'Neil's outfit this evening.
W. Hoolahan
Assist
Republic of Ireland
2' A cracking assist from Hoolahan, who spotted the space opening up before setting up Long.
S. Long
Goal
Republic of Ireland
2' GOOOOOAAAAALLLLLLLL FOR IRELAND! What a start for the Boys in Green! The Moldova defence opens up horribly and a lovely bit of interplay between McClean and Hoolahan sees the latter slide a lovely pass in behind the opposition backline for Long, who coolly slots into the bottom corner for the opener! One-nil.
1' We are under way in this World Cup qualifier!
The teams are making their way to the pitch and we are ready for the national anthems!
Both sides have conflicting fortunes in their previous qualifiers three days ago. Ireland, despite not playing anywhere near their best, secured a narrow 1-0 win against Georgia but Moldova did not enjoy their match against Serbia, and ended up losing 3-0. There has also been a lot of reported unrest among the squad of the hosts tonight, so all is not well!
Group D in qualifying has proved to be one of the more tight groups so far, as before today's fixtures no less that four nations were locked on four points each. Wales only managed a draw against Georgia earlier this evening, which opens up the door for one of Ireland, Austria, or Serbia to move to the top of the standings,
Republic of Ireland (4-2-3-1): Randolph; Coleman, Clark, Duffy, Ward; Whelan, McCarthy; Walters, Hoolahan, McClean; Long.
Moldova (4-4-2): Calancea; Bordian, Posmac, Armas, Bolohan; Andronic, Gatcan, Cojocari, Dedov; Zasavitchi, Bugaev.
