That's it from me on a relatively positive evening for the Magpies. Newcastle will look to build on two decent results on Sunday when they face Norwich, but will need to improve in their next European encounter against Bordeaux. This is Nicholas McGee, signing off.
90' + 5'
Full time: It finishes goalless here in Madeira. Alan Pardew will be somewhat satisfied with that result, and should be very pleased with the performance, but he will rue the missed opportunities which cost them the chance to take all three points.
90' + 4'
Fidelis heads wide from a Briguel delivery. A late winner for either team appears unlikely.
90' + 1'
There will be five minutes of injury time. Plenty of time for Newcastle to grab the points.
No real noteworthy chances in the last few minutes, this one looks to be heading for a draw.
Yellow Card Davide Santon
Time is ticking away in Madeira, can Newcastle snatch a late winner?
Adilson Tibes Granemann
Superb defending by Davide Santon as he clears Valentin Roberge's header off the line. Big let off for the Magpies.
Newcastle look devoid of ideas at the moment and it is Maritimo who are enjoying the better of the exchanges. Alan Pardew makes another change as Sylvain Marveaux replaces Gabriel Obertan.
And as I say that, Shane Ferguson replaces Romain Amalfitano.
Maritimo are starting to look a little more confident late on. Alan Pardew may be wise to make another change just to freshen things up a little.
Newcastle have been very much in control here, but Maritimo are still in the game and Sami forces a good stop from Elliot after a quick counter attack from the home side.
Yellow Card Romain Amalfitano
Shola Ameobi has again gone close to giving Newcastle the lead, the veteran striker turns smartly in the box but his effort is smartly saved by Salin.
Bigirimana plays in Sammy Ameobi from a free-kick and his shot is deflected just wide of the post.
Newcastle still look the more likely to take the lead but the home side go close as Fidelis curls a shot wide of the post after latching on to Sami's delivery.
More good build-up play from Newcastle as the two Ameobis combine to feed Amalfitano on the edge of the area, however the Frenchman cannot convert as he skews a shot wide.
Heldon is replaced by Ramos Fidelis for Maritimo.
The Ameobis are now the first brothers to play for Newcastle in European competition. A piece of Magpies' history in Madeira.
Haris Vuckic looks to have picked up a knock and he is replaced by Sammy Ameobi.
Newcastle are completely dominating the game now. Obertan breaks free down the right hand side, but his pull back is cleared by the Maritimo defence.
Newcastle hit the woodwork again! The centre forward finds himself in acres of space in the midfield before advancing forward and waltzing past the last defender, however he fails to find the net as his right footed effort crashes against the crossbar.
Newcastle get the second half underway.
Newcastle have performed well this half despite some early scares and on the balance of play they probably deserve to be in front. Alan Pardew look to re-energise his troops during the break as they look to get their Europa League campaign off to a winning start.
45' + 2'
Yellow Card David Simao
45' + 2'
More boos in Madeira as the referee refuses to give a back pass in Maritimo's favour. The half ends and Newcastle - aside from the fact that they have not taken the lead - will be happy with their half's work.
Yellow Card Gael Bigirimana
A little slice of controversy here, as Joao Luiz refuses to kick the ball back to Elliot following a drop ball. Bigirimana puts in a very fair challenge and is inexplicably booked by the Austrian referee.
The game is meandering to half time in Madeira. Maritimo are beginning to enjoy more of the ball but aren't really troubling Newcastle.
Newcastle are very much in control at the moment but the opening goal continues to elude them. However you feel if they get one, then the floodgates may open.
Maritimo are lucky to be level but they are still very much in this game, however, chances are becoming fewer by the minute for the home side, and Joao Luiz hits a long range effort way over the bar.
Newcastle are well on top now and should be ahead, Dan Gosling smashes a long range shot against the post before Gabriel Obertan volleys an effort across the face of the goal.
Huge chance for Newcastle! The Magpies force two back to back corners and after the initial danger is cleared Amalfitano crosses in for Williamson, whose effort is deflected into the path of Ameobi, but the striker's diving header is brilliantly saved by Maritimo keeper Salin.
We have a little bit of a break in play here as Joao Luis struggles to recover from an aerial collision with Steven Taylor.
Newcastle really need to maintain possession better than they are doing right now, they are allowing the Portuguese side too much of the ball and the men from Madeira are continuing to dictate play.
The game has died down a little, Newcastle look to have weathered the storm a little and are starting to gain somewhat of a foothold in the contest.
Newcastle are allowing the Portuguese side too much space in the midfield and the home team are dominating the game, Heldon flashes a shot high and wide of the goal.
Its all Maritimo at the moment, Mike Williamson fails to deal with a long ball forward and Elliot has to produce another fine save to again prevent Sami from finding the net.
Superb opportunity for the home side, Newcastle fail to deal with a corner and Elliot has to react well to deny Sami from close range.
Half chance for Newcastle, Gael Bigirimana plays in Davide Santon down the left and his cross eventually finds Romain Amalfitano, however the Frenchman cannot find space to shoot and the ball is eventually cleared.
Not much to report here in Madeira. Sami delivers a vicious cross to the near post but it is well handled by Rob Elliot.
Both teams have made a decent start to this once, Maritimo look dangerous going forward but Newcastle are pressing well and have been strong in possession.
Early danger for Newcastle as Simao whips a ball in from the left hand side but midfielder Heldon cannot provide the final touch.
Maritimo get this contest underway!
The teams stand for the Europa League anthem, kick-off is imminent.
The teams are in the tunnel as Newcastle, decked in their lime green European away kit make their first appearance in the Europa League group stages for five seasons.
Frenchman Romain Amalfitano also makes his full debut for Newcastle, while Haris Vuckic and Gael Bigirimana both start after impressing so far this season.
So Newcastle make seven changes to the side that earned a last gasp point at Everton on Monday night. Shola Ameobi captains the side, while Rob Elliot starts in goal. The Magpies however kept the same back four from that dramatic game at Goodison Park.
Newcastle subs: Harper, Marveaux, Sammy Ameobi, Ferguson, Tavernier, Abeid, Campbell.
Newcastle: Elliot, Perch, Williamson, Steven Taylor, Santon, Obertan, Bigirimana, Gosling, Amalfitano, Shola Ameobi, Vuckic
Maritimo subs: Lima De Oliveira, Joao Diogo, Marcio Rosario, Igor Rossi, Goncalo Abreu, Fidelis, Adilson
