West Ham United
90' + 1'
And that is that, Man Utd are comfortable winners at Old Trafford by an emphatic 3-0 scoreline. West Ham lose again and have endured a terrible start to the season. The Hammers were outclassed on the night and a penalty goal from Rooney as well as two sublime team-goals from Nani and Berbatov did the damage. Hope you enjoyed the coverage tonight and have a good evening!
SHOT FROM PIQUIONNE! The striker tees himself up at an angle to the left of Van Der Sar's goal and drills a hard shot low towards the near post. Edwin punches it away.
West Ham win a corner. Noble swings into the centre of the box but the cross is cleared easily and United sweep forward again on the break. The ball is eventually shifted out to Giggs who tries to dribble past Upson but the English defender doesn't let him pass and the Hammers pass out from danger under heavy pressing.
Relentless from United. Rooney's touch has been slightly off again but to his credit he loses the ball twice but then chases it down to get back possession and then plays in Giggs with a slide rule pass. The veteran Welshman has a pop but Upson gets in the way to save further torment.
Great tackle by Vidic to intercept a move between Piquionne who slids in Cole but the Serb won't be beaten tonight and slids in to kick the ball safe. Cole again comes off worse and winces as he is sprawled out on the grass.
Another good move from United involving Rooney, Owen and O'Shea, whose pass into the box is cleared to safety by Spector.
Confirmation that the result is well and truly in the bag arrives when Ferguson decides to bring on some of his fringe players. But the introduction of Owen and Smalling won't make things that much easier for the Hammers such is the quality of the Red Devils' squad.
It's game over for West Ham now and Grant's side look all spent. How the Israeli picks them up for a visit by Chelsea next week is anyone's guess but things won't be getting easier for them anytime soon.
Yellow Card D. Berbatov
West Ham couldn't get near the ball before it was eventually worked into the final third for Berbatov to finish emphatically.
Goal D. Berbatov
WHAT A GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!! Absolutely sublime team-play sees the ball get worked out to Nani on the left who stands it up for Berbatov at the back post and the Bulgarian pulls out one from his magic bag, hitting it on the volley leaving Green NO CHANCE!! Man Utd three up and playing with a swagger!
Man Utd are finding angles in the final third that are opening up the Hammers. Pass and move up to the box ends in a Giggs reverse pass that lets Nani cut into goal but Upson does enough to snatch the ball away and clear.
Excellent bring down from Berbatov who brings a high ball down, roulettes on the spot and releases Evra who sqaures but Rooney can't get to it. If Rooney has looked decent, the Bulgarian has looked even better.
Rooney has looked more impressive this game and is giving the Hammers defence more problems than he did Newcastle on the opening fixture. Upson takes one for the team and fouls the Scouser to stop another oneof his runs towards goal.
Yellow Card Matthew Upson
CLOSE from West Ham! The ball is rushed up to Dyer with each pass being harrassed by Red shirts but Dyer managers to turn and unleash a rocket that clips the outside of Van Der Sar's left post!
Man Utd are playing for fun right now. Another good passage of play threatened a third goal for the home side with Rooney being released down the centre by Scholes again. But Spector recovers well to slide in and dispossess a one-on-one with poor Green.
That was reminscent of Cristiano Ronaldo the way Nani ran through there and finished. Excellent move that opened up West Ham like a can of beans.
Assist Wayne Rooney
NANI MAKES IT TWO!!!!!! Great move by United as a flowing moves ends with a Rooney back-heel to Nani who jinks past two defenders into the box and finishes expertly into the right of goal! 2-0 Man Utd!
This will be West Ham's worst start to a top flight campaign in 30 years if they lose this match. They are chasing things from the restart here though it doesn't look good...
Right, West Ham kick us off for the second half!
45' + 1'
And that's the end of the half. Unfortunately for the Hammers, they are getting well outclassed at the moment by Ferguson's men but fortunately, they are only one behind. Can the Hammers get something out of the game and put the Reds Devils further behind the early league leaders Chelsea? Or will Man Utd condemn Avram Grant to a third successive league defeat? Find out in ten minutes!!
Great lofted ball from Giggs this time is right on a postage stamp for Nani who is released behind the Hammers back-line. Upson can't get back in time so Green comes off his line and does enough to make Nani float his lob too high over the bar! Great chance missed!
This is as clear a definition of 'holding on' in a football match as you will see as the Hammers are under siege here and trying to stem a Red tide from breaching them at the back again.
BERBATOV HAS A GO! The ball is flicked up to the Bulgarian in the box by Giggs but Berba's attempted half-volley flies high and WIDE!
FLETCHER!!!!!!!!! Ohhhhh what a violent drive from the Scot: Berbatov spreads the ball right to Fletcher who looks up and unleashes a venomous drive that Green does well to save by diving and sticking his gloves out.
Man Utd are ramping up the pressure here. West Ham have to be careful they don't get swept away now. Scholes is seeing more space open out in front of him and the Ginger Prince knows how to use it...Parker must close him down!
Rooney made no mistake there. He powered the penalty past Green into the bottom left of goal. He really needed that!
ROONEY PUTS IT AWAY FROM THE SPOT!! 1-0 to Man Utd!!
Penalty Goal Wayne Rooney
Assist Ryan Giggs
No suprise to see it's Rooney who is stepping up to take charge of the penalty kick. Will he break his scoring duck at last? He's stepped up, he looks a tad nervous to be honest...
PENALTY TO MAN UTD!! PENALTY TO MAN UTD!! Giggs is brough down as he runs into the box...it looks pretty clear cut to me...Jonathan Spector is the guilty man.
Cole is throwing his weight around up front for his side. Vidic doesn't seem to like it. Cole tries to run past the United stopper but Vidic shows him whose boss with a perfect tackle to dispossess the striker. Cole is on the floor and looks in pain. But it's his shoulder that looks hurt...
Another rare attack from West Ham. This time from Dyer from the left of the Man Utd goal tries and ambitious and hard shot low towards Van Der Sar's near post. The Dutchman has his angles covered though as he allows the ball to zip past wide.
INCHES WIDE FROM NANI! The Portuguese receives the ball in the left of the box and produces a venomous shot that Green parries onto his crossbar! So close, the Hammers are rattled at the moment...
That's encouraging from Avram Grant's side. They are slowly growing in confidence and a good passing move sees them work the ball up to Noble who shoots from the right of goal. Vidic is there though to close him down and his shot cannons of the Serb's shins.
Giggs sends in a corner, defended at the near post by Cole. Ball bouces out again to Giggs. His second cross is snatched from the air by Green. West Ham restart play.
Yellow Card Mark Noble
OWWW!! Noble goes in on Rooney late and sends the striker sprawling in pain. Noble is shown a yellow for his trouble.
AND NANI SENDS IT OVER! To his credit he kept it down but no cigar for Man United just yet.
The heavens have opened up in Old Trafford but its a Red tide that the Hammers are trying to quell at the moment. Nani is brought down in a promising position outside the box. The Portuguese winger steps up to take it himself...
Another effort from Rooney. This time Berbatov heads down a Scholes cross to his strike partner in the box but Rooney hits the ball with his shin and it doesn't look to clever.
The Hammers are being quick to get men behind the ball as soon as they lose it with Parker the sentry operating in front of his back-four.
Berbatov feeds Rooney the ball to the left of goal and the striker runs inside and fires a shot straight at Green from 25 yards out. Green gathers easily but West Ham must be careful to not allow too many chances like that.
West Ham are finding it hard to get their foot on the ball. Understandably so given the pressure the home side are putting in off the ball.
Good passing quality from Man Utd with good interplay between Rooney and Berbatov ends in play being spread out wide to Evra who wins a corner. From the set-piece, West Ham are disciplined and defend the cross at the near post.
Beautiful lobbed pass from Scholes over the top allows Berbatov in-behind the Hammers. Rooney is in the middle but the Bulgarian's intended cross is cut out by Spector and goes out harmlessly for a throw.
First half-chance for Man Utd - Evra skips past the challenge of Gabbidon down the left and delivers a cross to the far post. Green is alert to the danger though, and collects the ball easily, much to the chagrin of Berbatov at the back post!
Right, we're off! The ball is worked out to Giggs on the left flank and his outside of the boot pass is cut out by Gabbidon. West Ham pass back to 'keeper Green and restart from the back.
Wayne Rooney has not scored for 1081 minutes, which is a whooping 13 matches. But he starts at O.T today...
And the line-ups are in: Man Utd: Van der Sar, O'Shea, Vidic, Jonathan Evans, Evra, Nani, Scholes, Fletcher, Giggs, Rooney, Berbatov Subs: Kuszczak, Owen, Smalling, Hernandez, Carrick, Rafael Da Silva, Valencia
West Ham on the other hand are goalless in the league so far, with losses against Aston Villa and Bolton.
The Red Devils are coming into this third Premier League round off of a draw against Fulham last weekend and will be looking to keep up pace with main title rivals Chelsea, who maintain the heat with a victory against Stoke earlier today.
