Manchester United won 5 - 3 on penalties
United claim the victory to move on to six points in Group A. They may have needed penalties to pick up the win, but few would claim the Premier League side were not the better side. Inter kept them at bay, but they rarely threatened themselves and the better side ultimately emerged victorious. I hope you have enjoyed the action today. Farewell until next time.
FLETCHER MAKES NO MISTAKE! The captain marches up and dispatches his kick to the right in confident fashion, giving United the win!
ANDREOLLI MISSES! The defender steps up and fires his penalty on to the crossbar, giving United the chance to achieve victory.
KAGAWA! The Japan star slots past the helpless Carrizo to keep United in control.
GOAL! Inter keep things Interesting as Taider crashes in an impressive penalty down the middle.
THREE FOR THREE! Cleverley trudges up and coolly slots to the keeper's left.
M'VILA GETS LUCKY! The Frenchman's penalty looks set to be saved, but De Gea can only palm it on to the crossbar and it bounces in.
BURIED! Hernandez steps up and continues the trend set by Guarin and Young, with a very good penalty into the top-right corner.
GOAL! Guarin blasts the penalty in in typical fashion.
CONVERTED! Young hammers home his penalty in emphatic style. Guarin up now for Inter.
Ashley Young will take the first penalty.
90' + 2'
FULL-TIME! The teams could not be separated, so we will have a penalty shoot-out to determine the winner of this International Champions Cup group match.
90' + 1'
There will be a minimum of two minutes added on. Can either side get a late goal to avoid a penalty shoot-out?
Wonderful individual play by Zaha. The youngster nudges a defender off the ball on the left flank, runs at Ranocchia and then shoots from just inside the area, but his effort only finds the side-netting.
Cleverley and Andreolli clash again, this time about 35 yards from the Inter goal and on this occasion the referee brandishes a yellow card for the defender as he cynically fouls Cleverley mid-turn.
ACCROBATIC STOP BY DE GEA! Unsurprisingly, Guarin steps up and absolutely hammers the free-kick towards goal, but De Gea tips it over the crossbar and then United win free-kick of their own from the resulting corner.
The Inter free-kick comes to very little, but they win another one just a few moments later as Hernandez clashes with M'Vila in the air. With Guarin now on, this is a good chance for Inter.
Cleverley is now on the other end of a decision as he brings Laxalt down with a strong challenge just inside the United half. Meanwhile, Van Gaal is outraged by something on the touchline, presumably the decision to not award a penalty.
PENALTY SHOUT FOR UNITED! Cleverley receives the ball in the area from Zaha and, although his first touch isn't great, he manages to nudge the ball away from Andreolli, who blatantly trips him. Yet, the referee decides against awarding a penalty.
United are enjoying something of a resurgence at the moment. For long periods of the second half they have been quiet, but at the moment Van Gaal's men appear to be full of energy and urgency, crowding the Inter half and moving the ball sharply.
Shaw produces another impressive lung-busting run from the defensive third all the way into attack. This time he offloads the ball to his left for Zaha, who can only win United a throw-in.
Here comes another United change as Nani -- who only came on at half-time -- is replaced by Javier Hernandez.
NANI DENIED! United work the ball well over to the right and Zaha plays it inside for Nani, who produces a good turn and cuts a pass back for Fletcher. The Scot looks destined to shoot first-time from range, but he slips a clever pass into the area for Nani, whose prodded attempt is blocked by Carrizo, and Andreolli hacks away before Kagawa can pounce on the rebound.
Inter make another change now as Vidic's day comes to an end. He is replaced by Andreolli at the back.
CLEVERLEY BLAZES OVER! Fletcher links up well with Zaha on the right and crosses into the area. The latter, Nani and Kagawa are all unable to get on the end of but, but Cleverley, who arrives late, meets it with a half-volley and he fires over from the edge of the area.
Nani isn't very impressed with D'Ambrosio's actions. The United man harried his opponent as he back-tracked towards his own goal and D'Ambrosio appeared to catch Nani with a flailing elbow. The referee gives nothing, however and just ends up having a word with an annoyed Nani.
M'Vila, who has been very quiet, tries to give Icardi something to work towards as he curls a pass in behind the United defence. The forward chases towards the corner flag, but Blackett shows a good turn or pace and calmly shepherds the ball out of play.
Those subs at the break have undoubtedly had a negative affect on the United side. They appear far less fluid and, although they do look slightly better than Inter still, the Serie A side seem to be playing with renewed urgency and determination.
Here come a few Inter changes as Taider, Laxalt, Nagatomo and Carrizo come on, taking their substitution tally to five following Yann M'Vila's introduction at the break.
Corner to United as Van Gaal's men try to make ground down the right-hand side and see an attempted cross blocked behind. Nothing comes of the set-piece, though, and Kagawa's eventual cross back into the danger zone is stopped early.
NANI POKES WIDE! Lovely play by the Portugal international as he attacks Dodo, cuts inside, skips past a tackle and then plays a one-two with Zaha. Space disappears quickly as Nani receives the ball back, but he gets a shot away, prodding just wide of the top-left corner.
In terms of possession, the second half has -- so far -- been a far more even contest. That could be down to Mazzarri's slight change of system, but it should not be forgotten that this is now a highly unfamiliar United team.
Inter do appearing to be putting more pressure on the United defence in this second half, with three attackers evident in the Premier League side's part of the pitch at almost every moment.
Threatening play by Zaha as he is given a lot of space by the Inter defence when receiving a pass. The youngster produces a clever turn and excellent burst of pace as the ball approaches, seeing him march in behind the Inter defence, but they eventually catch up as his touch fails him inside the area.
An attacking opportunity presents itself for Inter, who win themselves a throw-in in an advanced position on the left. However, Kuzmanovic is the target for the throw as he sneaks into the edge of the United box, and his first-touch is appalling, as he knocks the ball out of play.
The initial corner is knocked behind by an Inter defender for another one, but the second is headed over by Evans, who was unable to steer Young's delivery on target.
United look the more threatening early on, though. Shaw gets played in down the left and he fires a cross in which is deflected behind for a corner.
Although we have had a large number of changes, let's hope that proceedings are a little more open in the second half. Inter offered very little as an attacking threat and they will likely be hoping to change that in the second 45.
United have made eight changes in total. David De Gea, Michael Keane, Tyler Blackett, Tom Cleverley, Shinji Kagawa, Luke Shaw, Wilfried Zaha and Nani are on. The only players to remain on the pitch from the first half are Evans, Fletcher and Young.
We are back underway for the second half. Changes have been made and I shall relay the appropriate details as soon as possible.
The referee blows his whistle right on the 45 minute mark, allowing now stoppage time and few will be too bothered. United have been far better during the first period, playing some very eye-catching football in spurts. Nevertheless, in terms of end-to-end entertaining, the first 45 minutes were a big disappointment, perhaps largely down to Inter's apparent lack of attacking intent.
Van Gaal will no doubt find reasons to be optimistic following United's first-hald display, but he will undoubtedly be a little disappointed that his side have not managed to break through an extremely unambitious Inter team.
Inter enjoy some late possession as the first half nears its end, but Jonathan is tripped over by Mata, winning a free-kick and then the Italians blast the resulting set-piece straight out of play.
MATA GOES CLOSE! United work the ball out to Valencia on the right and, although he doesn't attack his marker, he picks out a good ball as he cuts a pass back to Mata. The former Chelsea man moves into space and shoots from 25 yards, but his low drive goes just wide.
Fantastic move by United! Mata comes deep to receive the ball and he quickly offloads to Rooney, who in turn plays it forward to Welbeck. Mata then receives his first-time flick, before waiting for Rooney to join him again. Those two enjoy another one-two, with the Spaniard getting into the area, but his pass across goal is cleared away by Inter.
This really has not been very good so far. United have had all of the possession, but they have not done much with it. While Inter on the other hand have done virtually nothing in the attacking third. Evans, Smalling and Jones have not been tested at all.
United haven't had much luck in the final third so far, but things could change now. Fletcher picks out a good pass over to the left for Rooney, who manages to win a throw-in.
Icardi has been completely starved of service so far. The Argentinian's eyes light up at the possibility of getting the ball in the United area, but once again the combination of Smalling and Jones cope with the long ball.
Mata then steps up to take the free-kick, but his delivery is uncharacteristically poor, as he smashes the ball over all of his team-mates and straight into the grateful hands of Handanovic.
Free-kick to United now as Mata picks up the ball about 30 yards from the Inter goal and, before he can play Welbeck in over the top, he is barged over by D'Ambrosio.
The Inter centre-backs are trying to get as tight as possible to the United forwards. Valencia comes in from the right and picks out Welbeck, who attempts a first-time flick on to Rooney, but the former is dispossessed.
In an attempt to get Inter moving forward towards the United goal, Vidic blasts a lofted pass up the right flank towards Icardi, but the pass is hit far too long as Inter remain frustrated.
Van Gaal's men are dominating possession currently and playing with some swagger as they knock the ball around with one-touch football. Inter may be coping fairly well at the back, but their midfielders are looking a little overrun.
United's movement in midfield and attack has, until now, looked much better than Inter's. Nevertheless, the Italians are keeping their opponents at bay and they don't look particularly threatened.
Threatening wing play by United. Valencia attacks down the right and blasts a cross over to Young. The former Aston Villa man produces a clever turn and then flashes a good delivery across the face of goal, but no one is there to knock it in.
Rooney is clearly confident following his performance against Roma and, like in that match, he tries to find the net from the edge of the area. He takes a touch while surrounded by three defenders, but he shoots just over the goal.
D'Ambrosio delivers the free-kick from the left flank, but the set-piece isn't good enough and it causes United few problems, with the Premier League side clearing swiftly.
Valencia is the first player to find his name in the referee's book. Dodo showed clever feet to play the ball between the Ecuadorian's legs and then skip past Fletcher. Valencia hauled the Brazilian down at the second time of asking, though.
Good effort by Jonathan. The right-side player finds space in a fairly central position and, after being invited towards the United area, he shoots. Smalling makes an important block, deflecting the ball over the crossbar.
HANDANOVIC TO THE RESCUE! Mata fires in an unspectacular corner delivery, but Inter fail to deal with it. Jones meets it at the front post, flicking a header in towards the bottom-right corner, but the goalkeeper claws it away.
Positive movement by Valencia as the wing-back roams up the right flank. He tries to squeeze a cross into the danger area, but D'Ambrosio gets a deflection on it and puts it behind for a corner.
Good play by Mata. The Spaniard appears to be crowded out just inside his own half, but he jinks to his left and pokes a pass to Rooney, who cuts the ball back to Fletcher as United escape danger.
United almost craft their own downfall there as Jones fails to deal with a long ball over the top for Icardi. The England defender allows the ball to run through, hoping Lindegaard can collect, but he then panics and effectively takes the ball right out of his goalkeeper's hands. Luckily for United, though, his poor clearance is mopped up well by Smalling.
United move the ball well in attack as Rooney, Mata and Welbeck all combine over towards the left. However, Herrera's audacious cross-field pass towards Valencia goes straight out of play, bringing the attack to an end.
Valencia is involved again, this time the Ecuadorian is the one on the ball. He successfully gets past D'Ambrosio just inside his own half, but the Italian fouls his counterpart.
Plenty of early possession for Inter. Vidic has already seen the ball on a number of occasions and he tries to help his team work an opening down the left, but Dodo is unable to beat Valencia.
Off we go! Inter get the action starting kicking from left-to-right.
The two teams are lined up on the pitch as kick-off is just a few moments away.
Meanwhile, Louis van Gaal's United line-up in his usual 3-4-1-2 formation, with Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans slotting into the defence, while Ashley Young gets the nods on the left-hand side ahead of Luke Shaw, whose fitness came under fire from the manager this week. Darren Fletcher pairs Ander Herrera in the middle and captains the team again, while Juan Mata is unsuprisingly deployed behind Rooney and Danny Welbeck.
There has been some confusion regarding the kick-off time of this match, but we expect play to commence in just over 20 minutes (00:30 BST).
Aside from Vidic, Walter Mazzarri's starting XI includes several fringe players as Danilo D'Ambrosio, Zdravko Kuzmanovic, Rene Krhin, Dodo and Ruben Botta all line up for Inter. The Italians beat Real Madrid on penalties in their opening match of this pre-season competition, while United beat another Serie A side -- Roma -- 3-2, largely down to Wayne Rooney's first-half double.
Of course, the major talking point in the build-up to this fixture is the presence of Nemanja Vidic. However, the Serbian centre-back lines up for Inter against Manchester United, whom he left at the end of last season. Vidic spoke about the match and revealed he was glad the match was only a friendly as he prepares to face his former team-mates.
Inter subs: Andreolli, Schelotto, Guarin, Obi, Taider, Mbaye, Silvestre, Puscas, Carrizo, Berni, Nagatomo, M'Vila, Laxalt, Bonazzoli.
Inter starting XI: Handanovic; Ranocchia, Vidic, Juan Jesus; D'Ambrosio, Jonathan, Kuzmanovic, Krhin, Dodò; Botta, Icardi.
