Live Commentary

  • Well, that's all from our LIVE coverage of the Premier League action from Old Trafford this evening. Just one more game to go this season, then. Thanks again for joining us, and goodbye for now!
  • For Hull, meanwhile, there's just one more game to get through before the highlight of their season when they face Arsenal in the FA Cup. It was all about resting players for Steve Bruce, who won't be too disheartened by tonight's defeat.
  • It's been an emotional night at Old Trafford as Nemanja Vidic has said goodbye to the fans, while Giggs may well have made his final appearance. The Red Devils are still in with a shot of European football, but need to win at Southampton and hope Tottenham lose at home to Aston Villa to leapfrog them into sixth.
  • That's FULL TIME at Old Trafford and Manchester United have taken a 3-1 win over Hull thanks to a double from youngster James Wilson and a late strike from Robin van Persie. Ryan Giggs came so close to netting but it wasn't to be, but he'll be happy with the win.
  • 90' + 3'
BUTTNER!! AND VALENCIA!! The efforts come thick and fast late on as both United men see efforts blocked, but Hull survive the danger and that should be that.
  • 90' + 2'
GIGGS!! SO CLOSE!! It's a beautiful effort as Giggs strokes the free kick from 30 yards towards the top-left corner, but Jakupovic does well to parry it behind for a corner, prompting boos from the home fans who wanted to see him score.
  • 90' + 1'
Well, here goes. United have a free kick around 30 yards from goal. Giggs is lining this one up...
  • 90'
Oh, David Meyler...that is a stamp. The midfielder is very lucky to get away with that. Januzaj challenges him near the Hull byeline and ends up giving away a free kick, but he's the one who goes down and Meyler stamps down on his leg seconds later. He's fortunate the referee missed that as he could have been in serious trouble - the FA may look at that one, though.
  • 89'
SMALLING!! NEARLY AN OWN GOAL!! Hull almost make it an interesting final few minutes as Rosenior charges to the line and fires a cross into the six-yard box. Smalling meets it and slices the ball straight at goal - fortunately for him De Gea is well placed and easily catches.
  • 87'
It's an assist, not a goal, then, for Giggs, but that should have sealed the points for United. Hull have had good spells but haven't been too bothered tonight - the FA Cup final is obviously the priority.
  • 86'
    Goal Robin van Persie
  • 86'
VAN PERSIE MAKES IT 3-1!! He's had a few shots already, and finally makes it count as Giggs plays an absolutely beautiful pass through the middle. The striker spins quickly and sees his first shot blocked by Davies before he drills the rebound low on the volley into the corner.
  • 85'
Meyler is unhappy after a coming together with Fellaini inside the United half, but play goes on and the hosts move forward. It's played into the Belgian, but his first-time pass is nowhere near a team-mate as Bruce tidies up.
  • 83'
VAN PERSIE AGAIN!! Januzaj has been wonderful tonight, as he accelerates away from his man before finding Van Persie on the left. The substitute drives towards the area before cutting on to his right and firing a powerful effort straight at Jakupovic.
  • 82'
Elmohamady is struggling after that earlier move saw him slam into the advertising hoardings. After a bit of treatment he seems OK but Steve Bruce isn't taking any chances, and he brings on Jake Livermore in his place.
  • 81'
Substitution Ahmed El Mohamady Jake Livermore
  • 80'
VAN PERSIE!! Great chance for the Dutchman as the hosts break forward, and Januzaj is again involved as he lays off to the striker, who fires just wide of the post.
  • 79'
MEYLER!! GREAT CHANCE!! Elmohamady chases the ball to the byeline and manages to hook his foot around it to fire in a low cross. Smalling's header is poor and Boyd lays off for Meyler, who fires at goal but draws a superb reflex save from De Gea. The ball goes towards Fryatt, but he can only get a touch which diverts it behind for a goal kick.
  • 78'
Giggs takes the United corner short to Kagawa, who moves it on to Buttner. The defender's floated ball is dangerous but well dealt with at the far post and Hull come forward themselves. This is end-to-end stuff now - much better than the first half.
  • 77'
Elmohamady is forward again and looks to play it inside this time, but Giggs charges in to steal possession before driving United forward. Fellaini returns it to the manager, whose low cross is cleared for a corner by Bruce.
  • 76'
Fryatt spreads the ball wide to Elmohamady, who produces a typically dangerous cross which Valencia does well to head away. The visitors come back, though, as Koren finds Boyd, who charges into the area but Vidic is there to challenge well.
  • 74'
Looking at the replay, that Giggs shot hit Bruce's arm on its way through to Jakupovic. I wonder if he'd have let himself take the penalty had it been given...
  • 73'
GIGGS!! Oh, so nearly!! The Welshman picks it up in midfield and plays a beautiful one-two with Januzaj before cutting on to his left foot and firing a shot away. It deflects off Davies and Bruce, though, and goes through to Jakupovic. What a story that would've been!
  • 72'
Giggs has his first involvement as he battles to close down Davies before moving out to the right-hand side. He's quickly closed down by two men, though, and surrenders the ball to a third as he looks for Valencia.
  • 71'
Giggs is on! The United legend has 20 minutes to have an impact on the game - he still needs a goal to make sure he has netted in every single Premier League season. Can he do that tonight?
  • 70'
    Substitution Thomas Lawrence Ryan Giggs
  • 70'
Oh Fellaini, that's not too good. Januzaj once again moves forward and stretches the Hull defence before squaring to Fellaini on the edge of the box, but the Belgian completely fluffs his effort as he slices it high into the stands.
  • 69'
Lawrence is so nearly through on goal as he charges into the Hull half and Davies' challenge doesn't quite take the ball away from him. The youngster doesn't escape Bruce, though, and the visitors survive the danger.
  • 68'
Fellaini draws a foul from Meyler before surrendering possession to the Hull man moments later, and the visitors have the ball again. Giggs, meanwhile, is changed and ready to come on.
  • 67'
Hull are definitely seeing more of the ball now, and are completing a lot more passes inside the United half. It's spread wide to Elmohamady by Quinn as the Tigers look to restore parity.
  • 66'
We've just had the biggest cheer of the night as Giggs has just started warming up on the touchline. It looks like the United boss will be handing himself his 963rd Red Devils appearance.
  • 65'
Lovely run from Boyd, who turns inside the United half before charging down the left-hand side. His cross is poor, though, as he fires it straight into the stands. Meanwhile, Wilson comes off to a standing ovation as Robin van Persie is introduced.
  • 64'
Substitution James Anthony Wilson Robin van Persie
  • 64'
We saw Liverpool throw away a three-goal lead yesterday. Is it the week for comebacks? Hull suddenly have a spring in their step after that lovely strike from Fryatt.
  • 63'
    Goal Matt Fryatt
FRYATT!!! WHAT A GOAL!! Suddenly, Hull are back in it as Koren squares to the substitute, who cuts on to his right around 30 yards out, before firing a beautiful low curling effort just inside the post.
  • 62'
That should be that as far as the result is concerned. Could Wilson net a hat-trick on his debut? That would be some achievement. We're inside the final 30 minutes at Old Trafford, and I expect we'll see some changes soon.
  • 61'
    Goal James Anthony Wilson
WILSON BAGS ANOTHER!! Januzaj escapes down the right after a mistake by Davies, and he moves into the box before squaring to Fellaini. The Belgian really should score but hits it straight at Jakupovic, and Wilson is first to the rebound to tap in from a couple of yards out.
  • 60'
Vital defending from Elmohamady as United really turn the screw. Januzaj plays the ball into the area for Kagawa before receiving it back, and he whips a dangerous cross to the far post looking for Fellaini, but Elmohamady produces a timely challenge to turn it away.
  • 59'
Bruce floats the ball forward looking for Fryatt, but Vidic is again there to read it and win possession back for United. They're definitely going to miss the Serbian's presence in defence.
  • 58'
Giggs' name has been sung a few times by the home fans in the last few minutes. Surely he'll give himself some game time this evening?
  • 57'
MEYLER!! A superb challenge!! Januzaj has been a menace tonight and he skips past two players before moving into the box, but Meyler recoveres brilliantly before producing a superb tackle to put it behind for a corner.
  • 56'
Elmohamady gets a rare opportunity to drive forward as he takes on Buttner before getting to the line near the corner flag. It's a slightly rushed cross, though, and it goes into the arms of De Gea at the near post.
  • 55'
Januzaj charges down the right once more, twisting and turning in front of Figueroa before flicking the ball high over the top. Wilson spots the delivery and looks to get to it in front of Jakupovic but the Hull goalkeeper does well to get it under control.
  • 54'
Hull finally manage to get a bit of possession, although it's mostly inside their own half. Figueroa slides the ball down the left looking for Matty Fryatt, but he asks too much of the substitute and it goes out for a throw.
  • 52'
Yannick Sagbo gets his first touch since coming on as he picks it up on the left, but Januzaj is there quickly to win the ball back for the hosts. It's like a training match, this one.
  • 51'
JANUZAJ!! We've played practically all the half in the Hull half, and United have another effort at goal as Januzaj collects the ball in the middle before turning and drilling a low shot, but Jakupovic gets down well to turn it behind for a corner.
  • 50'
Kagawa drills a pass out to the right for Januzaj, who looks up before firing an early ball straight into the box. It's intended for Fellaini but the delivery is poor and Jakupovic claims it at the far post.
  • 48'
United have settled into the second half very nicely already, and are keeping possession with all the comfort they enjoyed before the break. Hull really don't look at all bothered about tonight's result.
  • 47'
WILSON!! United almost in immediately as Lawrence produces a marauding run forward, eventually getting stopped in his tracks by Meyler around 30 yards out, earning the Hull man a booking. Lawrence's long-range effort is poor but it's worked back to Januzaj, who finds Wilson with a short cross and the striker flicks a volley just wide of the far post.
  • 46'
    Substitution Liam Rosenior Y. Sagbo
  • 46'
    Substitution Shane Long Matt Fryatt
  • 46'
    Yellow Card David Meyler
  • 46'
Hull resume proceedings, then, as the action starts for the second half.
  • Almost time to get back underway, then. It's all been a little bit stale so far, but can someone liven things up after the break?
  • Can United end their season at Old Trafford on a high? They need a win to keep their hopes of finishing sixth in tact. Be sure to join us when we resume for the second half.
  • Hull obviously have the FA Cup final on their minds, and Steve Bruce's men aren't going to waste too much energy chasing this one. They're safe from relegation so there's little to play for.
  • That's HALF TIME at Old Trafford and Manchester United are ahead at the break thanks to James Wilson's debut goal. It's been a pretty comfortable evening for Giggs' men, so far, and they're well worth their lead.
  • 45' + 2'
FIGUEROA!! Smalling is penalised for a late challenge out wide and Hull have a chance to load the box for the first time this evening. Koren floats it towards the box but it's headed away. It comes straight to Figueroa, who flashes a dangerous effort from all of 35 yards which goes just wide of De Gea's post.
  • 45' + 1'
United are probing late on as we play the first of two added minutes, but all the passing is in front of Hull at the moment and they're not getting crosses in early.
  • 45'
Hull are the ones keeping the ball now, but Meyler gives it away with a very loose pass. He gets away with it, fortunately for Hull, as Kagawa's touch is poor and Bruce is able to tidy up for the visitors.
  • 44'
Buttner is completely caught out in midfield as he gives it straight to Koren, who plays the ball into the path of Elmohamady. It's a poor cross from the right, though, as Vidic is able to clear at the near post.
  • 42'
Lawrence gets on the end of a high diagonal ball and heads it towards the middle. Bruce does well to clear but it's straight to Buttner, who looks for Fellaini at the far post. It's a poor cross, though, and Jakupovic claims comfortably.
  • 41'
Figueroa gives the ball away and Carrick shows real desire to keep it in play as it rolls to the touchline, before Boyd fouls the midfielder and United have a free kick on the right-hand side.
  • 40'
We're back underway as Jakupovic fires the free kick forward, which Vidic heads out for a throw. Elmohamady is back on, too, and looks like he'll be fine to carry on.
  • 39'
We've got another stoppage now as Elmohamady is dwon receiving treatment. He's been one of their biggest attacking sources thanks to his crossing, so Bruce will be hoping it's not a serious problem.
  • 38'
    Yellow Card Marouane Fellaini
  • 38'
Quinn is down in a heap after Fellaini goes in late on the Hull man. The referee had warned the United man for some over-exuberance with Quinn earlier on, and he doesn't escape going into the book this time.
  • 37'
Phil Jones has left Old Trafford and is on his way to hospital, we hear. The defender has his arm in a sling but it could just be precautionary at the moment - he'll certainly be hoping so.
  • 36'
Kagawa puts pressure on Smalling with a poor header backwards, and the defender does well to get it under control before drawing a foul from Long.
  • 35'
The Tigers are seeing a bit more of the ball now, but it's all rather ineffective as United's pressing once again forces them backwards. Figueroa fires a lovely ball to the right for Elmohamady and Buttner is forced to put it out for a throw.
  • 34'
Lovely play from Lawrence, who turns in midfield before producing a driving run infield. He plays a neat one-two with Januzaj before looking to move into the box, but Davies shows his quality as he times his challenge perfectly to take the ball away from the striker.
  • 33'
LONG!! Great chance for the visitors as Buttner sells De Gea short with a poor header, and the goalkeeper also fails to deal with it properly as Long darts in to take it away from him. Luckily for United, Vidic is there to tidy up as Long looks to find a team-mate. Danger averted by the Serbian.
  • 32'
It was a very simple, but well-worked routine from United, and Fellaini gets himself an assist using his aeiral prowess. This should, really, be plain sailing for Giggs' men from here.
  • 31'
    Assist Marouane Fellaini
  • 31'
    Goal James Anthony Wilson
GOOOALLLL!!! WILSON SCORES!! It's a dream debut for the 18-year-old as Januzaj fires the free kick towards the far post. Fellaini wins the header and nodsit back to the middle for Wilson, who fires a first-time left-footed volley low into the net.
  • 30'
Fellaini and Januzaj link up well on the right before the latter skips inside and draws a foul from Rosenior. This is a good chance for United to whip it into the area, and Januzaj is lining it up himself...
  • 29'
Bruce (junior) has some time on the ball inside his own half, and looks to find Long with a high pass forward, but it's not accurate enough and the striker has no chance of reaching it. He's had very little service so far tonight.
  • 28'
Fellaini gets into a good position near the byeline, but can't find a team-mate as the Hull defence half-clears. Januzaj then challenges Meyler for it just outside the area, but the United man does so illegally and Bruce's side have a free kick.
  • 27'
Another penalty shout! Januzaj is causing havoc for Figueroa, and the youngster charges in from the right-hand side before the Hull defender slides in to get the ball. It looks, though, like it hits his arm on the floor, but nothing is given and the visitors can clear.
  • 26'
Januzaj tries to up the pace as he plays the ball towards Lawrence, but it's a little loose and the forward can't play a return pass into his path. Hull have a chance to push forward themselves, but quickly go backwards once again before Jakupovic hacks it away.
  • 24'
Hull are still surrendering plenty of possession to the hosts. Is this a tactic they could be looking to employ in the FA Cup final against Arsenal? They're certainly not expending too much energy this evening.
  • 22'
    Substitution Phil Jones Nemanja Vidic
  • 22'
And finally, Vidic enters the fray as he replaces the injured Jones. Could that be him out of the World Cup, I wonder?
  • 21'
It's a bit odd that United haven't put it out of play to bring on Vidic, but they continue to move it around casually. There's a real end-of-season feel about the game and the atmosphere so far tonight.
  • 20'
De Gea gets a rare touch on the ball as the hosts eventually move it backwards. They're in no rush to attack tonight as Hull allow them plenty of time on the ball. We're still waiting for Vidic to come on, too...
  • 19'
Play goes on for now as United keep the ball with just 10 men on the pitch. Smalling looks for Lawrence down the right channel, but Figueroa comes across to tidy things up calmly. United are attacking a lot down this side so he's going to be a busy man.
  • 18'
We could be seeing Nemanja Vidic much earlier than expected, it seems. Jones is marching straight down the tunnel after that challenge - it was full-blooded but quite reckless, and he's not come off well.
  • 17'
Ouch...Jones charges towards the near post looking to meet the corner, but he ends up clattering into Figueroa and may have done himself some damage. The defender is feeling his shoulder, and that could even be the end of his night.
  • 16'
LAWRENCE!! That's more like it! Carrick slides a pass into the striker's feet, and he turns quickly before driving towards the area and firing at goal, his shot deflecting just over the bar for a corner.
  • 15'
It's United's turn to keep the ball comfortably, now, with neither side too desperate to force anything. Buttner finds some space as he moves forward but has to turn, before it's nicely worked into Fellaini's path by Januzaj. The midfielder can't quite get it under control on the edge of the box, though, and he has to move the ball backwards.
  • 14'
Figueroa tries to find Long with a diagonal ball over the top, but Jones watches closely before heading it out to Valencia. He and Smalling will be keen to impress in defence tonight - they're fighting for a place on the plane to Brazil.
  • 13'
The ball is played into Long, who manages to spread play out wide to Elmohamady, but he has to go backwards as the hosts press well. This is all good time on the ball for the Tigers, though.
  • 12'
Finally, a spell of possession for Hull! Elmohamady picks it up inside the United half but the hosts get behind the ball well, so Bruce's men are forced backwards. They still have possession, though.
  • 11'
Jakupovic fires the ball forward and Koren looks to move the visitors forward, but Carrick does well to slide in and take possession for United. Long's looking pretty lonely at the moment.
  • 10'
If the opening 10 minutes are anything to go by, it could be a long night for the Hull defence. United continue to move it around inside the Tigers' half but Lawrence eventually surrenders possession as he fouls Bruce.
  • 9'
Hull are sitting pretty deep and the hosts are enjoying plenty of time on the ball inside their opponents' half. Lawrence drops deep before squaring to Kagawa, who again has more space, and he fires a low shot across goal which deflects well wide off Davies.
  • 8'
It's pretty quiet inside Old Trafford at the moment, but United look sprightly so far. Carrick lays the ball off for Kagawa, who spots some space in front of him and fires a 25-yard effort well over the bar.
  • 7'
Valencia again looks for Januzaj with a lofted ball down the right, but Figueroa does well this time as he brings it under control before squaring to Davies. Koren then floats a wonderful ball through for Long to chase, but Smalling watches closely before playing it clear.
  • 6'
Boyd tries to relieve some of the early pressure on the Hull defence as he moves away from the area, before drawing a foul from Valencia in midfield. The visitors quickly surrender pressure, though, before Meyler has to slide in to take it away from Kagawa.
  • 5'
Fellaini is seeing a lot of the ball early on, here. He's been given a more advanced role by Ryan Giggs, who is clearly looking to give support to the new-look striking partnership.
  • 4'
Penalty? The hosts have an early shout for a spot kick as Januzaj races on to Valencia's ball over the top, and he charges into the area from the right before Figueroa slides in on the youngster. It doesn't look like the defender gets any of the ball but the referee awards a corner, no more.
  • 3'
Valencia spreads the ball wide to Januzaj, who fires in a deep cross towards Fellaini at the far post. The Belgian wins the header and nods it back into the path of Wilson, who can't connect properly with his shot as Bruce gets in a challenge to scramble away.
  • 2'
Fellaini has plenty to prove at United after a disappointing season, and the midfielder gets stuck in early as he holds off challenges from Koren and Quinn. Kagawa then looks for either of the two youngsters up front with a ball through the middle, but Davies clears the danger.
  • 1'
We're underway in Manchester as the hosts get the ball rolling for the first half.
  • We're just a few minutes away from kick-off at Old Trafford, then. The players march out to a stadium with plenty of empty seats. Let's hope it fills up a bit more for a good atmosphere tonight.
  • Bruce's men, meanwhile, haven't won since they beat Sheffield United in the FA Cup semi-final on April 13, having lost one and drawn two Premier League matches since then. They have also won just three times on the road all season in the league - only Norwich, Cardiff and Stoke have a worse record.
  • The Red Devils have won all five Premier League meetings with Hull, and the Tigers already have one eye on the FA Cup final, so the hosts will be fancying themselves to take victory tonight. Life hasn't been great at home this term, though, as they've already lost seven league games at Old Trafford - the first time they've done so in 40 years.
  • Eldin Jakupovic is making his Tigers debut between the posts tonight, then. The Bosnian is one of five changes made by Steve Bruce, as Alex Bruce, George Boyd, Robert Koren and Stephen Quinn all come into the starting XI, with the likes of Jake Livermore, Tom Huddlestone, James Chester and Nikica Jelavic all rested.
  • Manchester United give debuts to young forwards James Wilson and Tom Lawrence this evening as Giggs shakes things up in the starting line-up. Nemanja Vidic will have to make do with starting his last game at Old Trafford on the bench, while Giggs is amongst the substitutes for the first time since taking charge, but there's no Rio Ferdinand or Patrice Evra in the squad.
  • Hull subs: Harper, Huddlestone, Livermore, Fryatt, Faye, Sagbo, Jelavic.
  • Hull City (3-5-2): Jakupovic; Bruce, Davies, Figueroa; Elmohamady, Koren, Meyler, Quinn, Rosenior; Boyd, Long.
  • Man Utd subs: Amos, Vidic, Keane, Mata, Giggs, Young, Van Persie.
  • Manchester United (4-4-2): De Gea; Valencia, Jones, Smalling, Buttner; Kagawa, Carrick, Fellaini, Januzaj; Lawrence, Wilson.
  • The teams have been announced so let's bring you tonight's line-ups, starting with the hosts...
  • Hello and welcome to LIVE coverage of the Premier League clash between Manchester United and Hull City. Ryan Giggs tasted his first Old Trafford defeat as they slipped up to Sunderland on Saturday, so can they bounce back against his former team-mate's side tonight?
