The Spaniard had a far easier afternoon that he could possibly have expected. Kept his concentration to keep out a curling effort from Rooney and could do nothing about Hernandez's late consolation.
An assured defensive performance from the England man, who started on the left before moving to the right. Seemed to hold back his attacking instincts as the Reds stayed solid as a unit.
Should have been sent-off for a sickening challenge on Nani moments before half-time that could easily have broken the Portuguese winger's leg. Defended well against Berbatov but that dangerous tackle was unforgivable.
Started well against Nani but hamstring injury forced him off in the 24th minute and he was replaced by Kyrgiakos.
Not had the greatest of seasons but looked fully focussed as he broke down United attacks with solid tackles and clever interceptions.
Clever movement and link up play in the final third opened space for the hosts. Had one effort smothered by Van der Sar but got caught up in the emotion and put in a bad challenge on Rafael's thigh.
An assured and accomplished display from the Brazilian as he started Liverpool moves and broke down United attacks.
The Portuguese playmaker caused all sorts of problems as he ran unchecked into the United penalty area and played quick, incisive passes. Seems to have quickly built a good relationship with Suarez and chipped in defensively as he twice cleared off the line.
The Liverpool captain looked off the pace but his passion and enthusiasm were needed for this fixture. Fired two late efforts just wide of the post.
Deserved his hat-trick for his tireless running as the Reds pulled United all over the place. The Dutchman's goals were as simple as he will ever score: the first a tap-in on the line, the second a header from inside the six-yard box after a gift from Nani, the third a rebound from Suarez's free-kick, but taking the match ball home with him means he won't care one bit.
What a player he looks. From the outset his touch, movement and energy frightened the daylights out of the United defenders. Wonderful mazy run past three players did all the work for Kuyt to tap home the crucial opener and his curling free-kick on target led to the third goal.
E. van der Sar
The Dutch veteran will be disappointed in the part he played in Kuyt's hat-trick goal as he failed to clear Suarez's free-kick in the danger area. Little he could have done about the first two goals and he made good saves to deny Maxi and Meireles.
Drafted in to replace Nemanja Vidic but looked shaky and off the pace against Liverpool's movement and sharp passing. Did not offer enough support for Evra as the hosts tried to exploit United's right side.
The Frenchman struggled as Kuyt, Suarez and Meireles all exploited space behind him. Overwhelmed by attacking numbers and received little support from his fellow defenders.
Very assured in the early stages, especially as he made a superb block to deny Kuyt a clear goalscoring opportunity. But the young defender's inexperience showed as United were blown away by three Liverpool goals.
A day to forget for the Portuguese winger as he gifted Liverpool their second goal with a woefully mistimed header that went straight to Kuyt - and he was then the victim of a horrific challenge by Carragher that forced him off on the verge of half-time. Nani was originally on his feet to chase the referee, but appeared in severe pain as he was taken off on a stretcher in tears.
Should have been celebrating his record-breaking 607th appearance for United but his day was ruined by a rampant Liverpool side. Worked hard but was denied space by the Liverpool strikers and failed to combine effectively with the visitors' strikers until a late cross for Hernandez's consolation.
Produced a couple of lovely long-range passes in the early stages but he never got to grips with the pace of the game before being replaced by Fletcher seven minutes from time.
Pedestrian performance from the midfielder as United were outrun and outworked in the middle of the park. He did not track Liverpool runners while his passing was casual and lacked ambition.
The Bulgarian seemed the only player of dragging United back into the game and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet. Hit the post with a brilliant effort from 25 yards with the outside of his foot and saw a header cleared off the line.
Back on Merseyside but not with a bang. Never troubled the Liverpool defenders as he dropped deep in search of the ball but didn't have the ideas to break down the Liverpool defence.
- P. Gulácsi
Replaced Aurelio in the 24th minute and was dominant in the air as Liverpool comfortably kept United at arm's length.
- 28 C. Poulsen
- 26 J. Spearing
Replaced Suarez with two minutes left.
Made his debut to a huge ovation as he replaced Meireles in the 74th minute. The £35m striker showed what he will offer the Reds with some excellent, well-directed headers.
- 24 D. N'Gog
- 29 T. Kuszczak
Replaced Rafael 14 minutes from time, most probably to prevent the Brazilian from being sent off.
- 20 Fábio
- 28 D. Gibson
On the bench because of illness and by the time he replaced Scholes in the 83rd minute it was too late to change the game.
- 26 G. Obertan
Replaced Nani in added time in the first-half but had to wait until the dying moments for his first chance, which he headed home expertly.
