Liverpool are almost back in front. Stewart Downing sends in a terrific cross from the left and Kuyt meets it at the far post but it is turned away brilliantly by De Gea. From the resulting corner there is panic as United struggle to clear the ball, but Nani eventually gets it away.
Assist Danny Welbeck
Goal Javier Hernández
GOAL!!! Chicharito heads in to level the game after a corner is flicked on by Welbeck. The Mexican striker proves his quality once again by arriving at the right time, but he was in acres of space in the box.
United have had most of the ball since the goal, but haven't really been able to do anything with it. Rooney is on, but dropping very deep.
Goal Steven Gerrard
GOAL!!! Steven Gerrard is really back now, scoring a free-kick from just outside the box. Though that really shouldn't have been allowed as Ryan Giggs moved out of the way in the wall, leaving David de Gea with no chance as it curled into the net.
Yellow Card Patrice Evra
Patrice Evra goes into the book after getting wound up by Suarez, a silly booking.
Evra is down in the corner receiving some treatment after a kick on the knee from Suarez and after receiving lots of abuse he cheekily kisses the Manchester United badge in front of the crowd.
The match has come to life in the past 10 minutes. Suarez has a shot from distance that is comfortably stopped by De Gea.
Yellow Card Rio Ferdinand
And straight away Young tests Reina as De Gea's long ball is flicked on by Welbeck and volleyed towards goal from an angle but pushed wide by the 'keeper.
Dirk Kuyt is pleading with the referee for a penalty after his hbeader struck the arm of Jonny Evans, but his arm was down by his side and it would have been a harsh decision.
Ashley Young bus a free-kick off Lucas, then bends an effort over the wall. Reina gets to the ball comfortably, but doesn't collect it in and it spills just wide of Danny Welbeck before collecting it in at the second attempt.
Back underway at Anfield and Jones is back on the pitch after that first half knock. Ashley Young gets an opportunity to stretch his legs and shoot, but drags his effort wide.

HALF TIME! It's a fairly drab affair at Anfield, with Suarez missing the best opportunity of the game.
Phil Jones and Lucas clash nastily, with both players receiving treatment after they banged heads and Jones also took a knock to the knee.
And his free-kick is punched away by De Gea.
Yellow Card Ashley Young
Ashley Young is booked for crudely bringing down Gerrard in a dangerous position on the right...
Park Ji-Sung robs Enrique of the ball on the halfway line and runs towards goal, shooting well wide when he perhaps should have passed.
Martin Skrtel runs the length of the pitch with little in the way of a challenge, but Rio Ferdinand shepherds the ball out of play for a goal-kick.
Suarez misses easily the best chance of the game! Charlie Adam is allowed to run and shoot from distance, but his shot is blocked and the rebound falls to the Uruguayan who turns Evans inside out but his effort is weak and straight at De Gea.
Liverpool fans are calling for a handball after Suarez's cross hits Rio Ferdinand, but it didn't appear to strike his arm.
Yellow Card Lucas Leiva
The first booking of the game goes to Lucas after he brought down Ji-Sung Park as the Korean was looking to get down the wing.
From his pre-match comments, Sir Alex Ferguson was looking to keep it tight and so far United have done exactly that. Suarez attempts a volley from 40 yards that wasn't in danger of going close.
Liverpool come close as Steven Gerrard whips in a cross after a short corner that flies straight across the six-yard box, with Suarez unable to get any contact on the ball.
It's been quite a restrained match so far with both teams lacking a bit of invention.
Phil Jones is the first player to have an effort on goal. A good move from United results in Evra finding Jones past the far post, but he can only guide his header into the side-netting.

First big tackle of the game from Patrice Evra on Steven Gerrard, as the pair clash near the corner flag with the Frenchman knocking the ball out off the Liverpool captain.
Manchester United get us underway...
Sir Alex Ferguson on Sky Sports giving his thoughts on the team selection: "We had a look at the game last season and we felt that we were far too open and I think bringing Phil Jones into the midfield gives us that bit more stability. "Wayne has had a bad week. He was devastated by the suspension, I must say that, and when you think about it, he'll miss the European Championship and quite feasibly could miss the whole competition because you're never certain you're going to qualify from the group. So that's been a bad week for him really. I just felt all things considered he'd be better starting on the bench."
Welcome to Goal.com's coverage of Liverpool v Manchester United! The big team news today is that Wayne Rooney is benched following his sending off for England last week.
