The Cottagers, on the other hand, come into this clash on the back of three successive defeats across all competitions – a run that has seen them slip to 16th in the league table. Manager Martin Jol is under quite a bit of pressure to turn around the club’s dreary form of late and a trip to Anfield comes at the most inopportune time for the Dutchman.
A return to winning ways will be the priority for Liverpool, whose bright early-season momentum was checked somewhat by their 2-0 defeat to league leaders Arsenal last weekend. Brendan Rodgers’ side have an immediate opportunity to reclaim lost ground in the league standings, with the Gunners facing a difficult trip to Manchester United on Sunday.
