Juventus 2-1 Bari: Late Aquilani volley gives Turin side home victory

Del Piero scores a stunning free kick to open the scoring

Juventus were made to work hard as they secured a 2-1 victory over Bari at the Stadio Olimpico in Turin.

Alessandro Del Piero put the home side ahead just before the break, but not long after half time Gergely Rudolf levelled for Bari, then with ten minutes left, Alberto Aquilani smashed home an 18 yard volley which earned Juventus the win.

Juventus dominated the early stages, pinning Bari back into their own half, however there was no early incision from the Bianconeri who displayed a crippling lack of movement in the final third.

Constantly looking for Del Piero and Milos Krasic, the home side were short of ideas as Bari held their ground and frustrated Juventus. Eventually, Bari put their opponents under a little pressure as Edgar Álvarez prodded right-back Frederik Sorensen.

It was Serie A's bottom side that created the first real chance when Alessandro Gazzi played a neat ball into the box, but Jaime Romero could not find a finish that matched his excellent control.

However, just as Bari thought they would be going into the break level, Del Piero unleashed a superb 20 yard free kick that curled over the wall and had Jean Francois Gillet well beaten. Moments earlier the Juventus captain ballooned another free kick well over the bar from similar range.

After the break Juve stepped up a gear, but against the run of play Bari drew level thanks to a debut goal from Rudolf. The new signing latched onto an Alvarez cut back after the Honduran galloped past Sorensen.

Looking to exploit the pace of Alvarez once more, he almost set-up another, this time for Stefano Okaka, but Giorgio Chiellini was alert and made a vital interception.

Juventus almost took the lead again as Simone Pepe hit a shot into the ground and as it looked to be looping over Gillet, a combination of the goalkeeper and Nicola Belmonte managed to keep the ball out of the net.

The game became stretched until Aquilani rifled in a volley from the edge of the penalty area after a poor headed clearance by Massimo Donati. Del Piero also had a hand in the goal as it was his free kick that caused the initial confusion.

Fighting off a spirited few moments from Bari, Juve held on to take all three points. As a result Bari remain rooted to the bottom of Serie A, while Juventus move up to sixth place.
