Genoa - Inter Preview: Home side look for first Serie A victory over the Nerazzurri in 17 years

Fresh from Champions League progression and a comprehensive win over Fiorentina, Claudio Ranieri's men will be hoping to continue the feel-good factor at the Marassi on Tuesday

Genoa coach Alberto Malesani is forced to contend with numerous absences against the Nerazzurri on Tuesday, as the trio of Valter Birsa, Juraj Kucka, Luca Antonelli have been ruled out, while talisman Rodrigo Palacio will be out of action until after the New Year. In addition, Cesare Bovo faces a late fitness test.

As a result, two changes are anticipated. Defender Kakha Kaladze should reclaim his place in central defence alongside Dario Dainelli, after the Georgian played out his one-match ban against Siena on Sunday. Also, Lucas Pratto is set to be given another chance to impress in attack, after so far struggling to impose himself since his arrival from Boca Juniors during the summer.

Meanwhile for the visitors Inter, they similarly have a growing injury list, which, bar long-term victim Emiliano Viviano, include Diego Forlan, Jonathan, Joel Obi, Dejan Stankovic and Wesley Sneijder, who should be back in the side in early 2012.

Regarding the expected XI to take to the field in Liguria, Ricky Alvarez looks to be the only incoming player, with Philippe Coutinho ready to miss out and settle for a place on the substitutes bench.

  • Genoa have not defeated Inter in Serie A action since the 1994-95 season.
  • The Rossoblu recently ended a run of two straight defeats with a 2-0 win against Siena on Sunday.
  • However, they have been unable to register back-to-back victories since matchdays three and four.
  • Inter are unbeaten in their last nine Serie A games against Genoa (W6 D3).
  • The Nerazzurri have kept a clean sheet in each of their last three visits to the Marassi against Genoa.
  • Contrastingly, in 21 competitive matches this season, Inter have not conceded only five times.

The goalkeeper is likely to face an Inter side with renewed vigour after their solid victory at the weekend, and although the strike duo of Pazzini and Milito have struggled for goals, they have the ability to fashion a chance from nothing. The custodian will need to be alert in order to keep a clean sheet.

The Italy international ended his three-month scoring drought on Saturday in the win over Fiorentina, and that goal will give a player toiling for confidence a monumental boost. He will hope to squeeze in a few more strikes to go into the winter break more content with his standard of performance in the first half of the season.
The Nerazzurri have a good track record in this fixture recently and should take care of business with a slender victory at the Marassi, to begin to move back up the Serie A table.
