90' + 5'
And the game has ended! Inter continue their resurgence and winning ways against Genoa thanks to the head of Yuto Nagatomo, and despite some late pressure from Genoa. The side can also be thankful for the returns of Poli and Forlan from injury, and suddenly things are looking up for Claudio Ranieri's men. I'm Julian De Martinis, and I'd like to thank you for joining us here at Goal.com for this match!
90' + 4'
Kaladze and Pazzini duel deep in Genoa's half and it eventually goes the home side's way when the striker fouls the defender. Free kick to Genoa now.
90' + 3'
The game is exploding into life again here at the end. Veloso's cross goes across the goal with no one there to capitalize on it!
90' + 2'
Forlan works magic to play the ball to Alvarez high up the pitch. He cuts it to Pazzini, who can only fire right at Frey from about 10 yards out!
90' + 1'
Superb double save from Julio Cesar! He first parried Rossi's flying shot in the box before reaching up to tip Veloso's chance over the bar!
Awkward moment for Genoa- Frey is caught in possession with a backpass and under pressure from Forlan just kicks the ball out for a throw in. Inter manage to use that to gain a corner but the delivery is poor and cleared.
Forlan cuts inside from the wing and unleashes a nice shot on target but it's too close to Frey, who collects it easily.
Some pressure from Genoa in the box but Samuel maintains his composure to dribble than clear the ball to safety. Alvarez on the counter attempts to get the ball to Forlan but Frey just reaches it before the striker.
Inter now playing with confidence and flair. Forlan tries to scoop the ball wide to Pazzini but his cross is cut out. It seems to matter little, as Inter quickly regain possession before Mesto counters. Samuel is forced into a good slide tackle to clear the ball for a throw in.
Play continues and it seems as if it may have been one of the ball boys who collapsed. Let's hope he's alright.
Scary moments on the sidelines- one of Genoa's staff has collapsed and the medical staff are rushing to assist him. The game has stopped and he's being stretchered off at the moment.
Zanetti heads the first corner out and the delivery on the second is quite poor. Diego Forlan is coming on for Milito as his injury nightmares seem to be behind him.
Motta impedes Caracciolo's progress and the home side are duly given a free kick, about halfway in Inter's half. It's played in but fails to get past the wall, though ends up right back with Genoa. Caracciolo knocks it down for Rossi just outside the area, whose shot is deflected out for a corner!
Alvarez races forward, and with no one to pass it to, unleashes a shot on target that bounces off the right post!
The last chunk of the match has mostly been Inter encamped in Genoa's half. On a foray forward, the home side fail to penetrate the defence with a cross and Inter counter again. Milito fouls Dainelli however and the opportunity goes begging.
Milito tries to dance his way to goal in the box but he fails to get past the second defender. Merkel comes off immediately after for Caracciolo as Malesani looks to get something from the match.
A nervy moment in the Inter backline- Samuel heads a pass back for Julio Cesar to collect, and he does, but not before it seems like Pratto just might get onto it!
Yellow Card Lucas Pratto
Genoa try to break through Pratto but the player is whistled for being offside. He's furious and kicks the ball away in anger, for which he's duly booked.
Pazzini plays a bobbing low cross into the box that Milito just fails to reach as he slides towards goal!
What a great save from Frey again! Milito played the ball to Pazzini in the box, who turned and shot on target, but the ball was cleared by Frey's leg! The goalie may have inadvertently saved that one!
Poli has been taken off for Obi, after a solid debut showing in Inter colors.
Assist Ricardo Álvarez
Goal Yuto Nagatomo
GOALLLLL INTER! Nagatomo rises above everyone else in the box to smash Alvarez's great cross into the net. Frey could do nothing about that! 1-0 to the visitors.
Milito tries to backheel the ball into Pazzini's path from a position just outside the box, but the pass is overhit.
Motta exchanging some words with the referee now as Poli takes a throw in. From that Rossi gets the ball in the box but he's offside.
Solid pressure from Genoa now, and the game has gotten quite physical. Genoa have another free kick after a petulant challenge on the wing.
Yellow Card Ricardo Álvarez
Alvarez booked now for a challenge on Moretti which has left the Genoa player furious and holding his back. It seems he just ran into Moretti while trying to get the ball.
Pazzini, while racing to get to the ball, simply shoves over Kaladze in the Genoa box. The ref isn't having any of it, and Jankovic comes on for Constant immediately after.
Frey has a goal kick after Milito runs out of bounds due to pressure from Kaladze.
Yellow Card Kakhaber Kaladze
Kaladze has been booked for sliding in on Milito with his knees from behind. Inter have a free-kick which Alvarez plays in but it's cleared immediately.
Confusion in the Inter box! Granqvist heads in the corner after a great delivery but the referee disallows the goal! He was just- very marginally-offside.
Zanetti pulls down Constant just outside the Inter box and Genoa now have a free kick. That's very unlike the Inter captain, that.
Milito very nearly played in from a great Lucio cross but Moretti is able to cut it out. Inter regain possession and use the chance to counter but are forced to play it back to Lucio; Genoa's pressing is giving them few passing avenues. Their chance ends as Constant intercepts a wry pass.
Genoa have started the half as the brighter of the two sides, albeit without even a true chance to show for it.
Moretti whips a cross deep into the Inter box and Julio Cesar rushes off his line to scoop it up.
A change for Genoa now, with the somewhat ineffective Ze Eduardo coming off for Pratto.
Moretti plays Constant down the left flank and it takes a solid interception to prevent the player from going forward. Veloso looks to cross soon after but his attempt comes right off of Lucio.
Alvarez leading the Inter charge now. He plays it wide to Pazzini, who turns and loses the ball. Alvarez tries to win it back but fouls Mesto in the process.
Constant tries to play Ze Eduardo through on goal with a flick on header, but the latter is offside.
One change for the second half- Faraoni is coming off for Ricky Alvarez for the visitors.
And the second half has kicked off! Both managers will probably be hoping for more of the same- Ranieri will want his men to continue creating chances as they've been, whereas Malesani will have noted his side's counter attacking potential.
45' + 4'
The referee finally blows for half time after a breathless first 45 minutes. Inter were undoubtedly the better side, with two great chances to take the lead, but Genoa can thank Frey for being at the top of his game. Join us in 15 for the second half!
45' + 2'
Kaladze takes down Faraoni and now Inter have a free kick. Motta takes this again, given the absence of Sneijder. It's floated into the box but initially cleared. Lucio has to slide to first time a cross right into Nagatomo's path but the fullback's shot drifts just wide of the far post!
45' + 1'
Four minutes of added time have been announced to little surprise given the number of players who went down. Julio Cesar is forced into a great parry to prevent a dangerous Constant cross from cutting across the face of goal.
Milito and Motta try a give and go in front of the Genoa defence but the return pass is off. Faraoni gets the ball and promptly runs into Moretti, giving the home side a free kick very deep in their half.
It's a better delivery from Veloso this time but Samuel's diving header clears the danger from his own box.
Genoa continue to look threatening on the counter. Great positioning from Samuel let him cut out the side's initial pass forward, but they get the ball back and earn another corner.
Poli tries to dance and orchestrate his way through several Genoa players but the home side manage to kick the ball out for a throw-in, deep in their half.
Pazzini dribbles around three players to unleash a shot on target and he's kicked in the process, earning a free kick. It's central and in a great position, 10 yards from the box. Motta takes it but fires it right at Frey, who catches it comfortably.
Genoa put the Inter defence under a lot of pressure and earn a corner for their efforts. Velolso plays it in, Julio Cesar punches it out, and Nagatomo is fouled while trying to clear it. Free kick to Inter.
Pazzini heads a Samuel cross right into Milito's path. The striker races towards goal and is taken down by Granqvist. The referee hasn't seen a foul however and lets play continue as Genoa counter.
Inter in the ascendancy at the moment. Genoa are only able to keep the ball for short amounts of time as the away side look voraciously for a goal.
HEROICS FROM FREY! HOW HAS HE DONE THAT! From the corner Samuel unleashes an absolute bullet of a header on target, but Frey is able to parry it! It then goes right to Milito, not three yards from goal, who shoots on target but Frey dives to his left and saves it! Two superb stops within seconds to keep Inter from scoring!
It takes some scrappy defending but Inter manage to nudge the ball away from Constant, who was just in front of the box and looking for Rossi. The visitors counter; Milito gets to the byline and tries to cross but it's cut out for a corner.
Lucio hits Ze Eduardo with his elbow whilst trying to head the ball clear, and thus yet another player is down injured. The player looks to be ok but is holding his head and needs to be evaluated off the pitch. Genoa temporarily down to 10 men.
Cambiasso plays an exquisite ball wide to Nagatomo, who races down the flank and crosses for Pazzini. His effort is thumped out for a throw in. Poli tries to hit the target from just outside the box but his effort sails over the top right corner of the goal.
Frey takes a goalkick and plays it deep into Inter's half, but it's cleared directly back to him. His second attempt fares worse and Inter now have possession, though not for long. It takes a Zanetti intervention near the byline of his own box to take the ball from Ze Eduardo.
Genoa's pace is truly troubling Inter at the moment, who cannot seem to get the ball. Poli is back defending and plays it deep to Samuel to clear, but his attempt only gives the ball back to the home side. Finally Lucio is able to lead an attack via one of his famous charges from the back, but his pass to Milito goes straight out for a Genoa throw in.
And hat's a very poor shot from Faraoni, who was off target with a weak effort very far from goal. Genoa use their ensuing possession to counter and it takes a very good slide from Samuel in the box to prevent Rossi's cross from causing havoc.
Pazzini is down after Granqvist catches the back of his foot. The striker wants a free-kick but the referee waves play on instead, much to his bewilderment.
Mesto and Rossi team up superbly and the latter nearly streaks right through the Inter defence. His first attempt is cut out, but Constant tries to cross from the follow up. Inter finally are able to clear but the warning sign from Genoa is clear- on the counter, they're able to truly threaten.
And yet another player down injured! Kaladaze and Faraoni tangle on the right and the youngster just catches the elder Genoa player as he turned away. Kaladze gets up and continues to play after a short while.
A searching ball nearly finds Ze Eduardo, but the striker is offside and Samuel is able to head it clear.
Rossi does very well on a counter, taking on Samuel and Nagatomo and earning his side a corner. The delivery is too close to Julio Cesar, who comes out of his goal to collect it.
Play now a bit less end-to-end as Inter are generally in control but Genoa have flooded the midfield. Ranieri's men are trying to use width to make inroads up the pitch but Nagatomo is being hounded on the left.
Mesto is off now for medical evaluation; should the sides continue at this pace it seems a serious injury may just be a matter of moments away. Luckily both Faraoni and Mesto are fine and let back on to play.
Faraoni is led off the pitch for the moment and Cambiasso takes the free kick, but it's a very poor delivery that sails over everyone. From the ensuing Genoa attack, Poli and Nagatomo both commit fouls in quick succession and the home side are looking for cards to be given out, but none are issued.
Constant and Faraoni's battle continues and this time the Inter player is down injured after the Genoa man just catches his foot. The medical team is on the pitch with their magic spray and the youngster looks to be ok.
Nagatomo finds Milito with acres of space up front, and the striker unselfishly and cleverly plays the ball back to the fullback high on the pitch for a cross. It's a solid delivery into the heart of the Genoa box but Pazzini fails to get on the end of it.
Great team move by Inter. Cambiasso in the midfield plays the ball to Pazzini further ahead, who lays it off for the onrushing Milito. The striker lashes a shot that begets a corner, which Motta gets on the end of but fails to test Frey.
Poli finds himself with a few yards of space just in front of the box and tries to tee up a shot but it's blocked by the Genoa backline.
Constant still trying to get past Zanetti on the right but he runs into trouble and Inter counter. It's slow and a bit ponderous as Genoa have many men back, but the visitors earn a free kick after Poli is brought down.
Frey saves Pazzini's shot in a one-on-one! Motta had just played the striker in behind the defence and the Italian races into the box with no one to beat but the goalie himself. He pokes his shot towards the right corner but Frey is down and saves it well. He appears to be offside in any case.
Poli has rather seamlessly fit into this Inter side as most of their forward forays are coming through him. Nagatomo tries a very cheeky flick over the defense from Thiago Motta's long cross but Moretti and Danielli read it perfectly.
The game has a frantic and a bit of a wild pace about it. Pazzini is down grimacing lightly after coming off worse for the wear in an aerial duel with Mesto.
Faraoni tracks a run that Constant makes and Genoa are forced to switch wings once and then again, as Merkel cannot get past Poli on the left. Eventually the pressure from Genoa results in a throw-in.
Lucio does wonderful work to stop Merkel from charging forward just as the youngster was gaining steam in the Inter half. He'll have to be more clever however as the Brazilian reads his run and pokes the ball away.
Three Genoa players converge on Poli on the left and the Inter youngster earns his side a free kick. The team look to play it quickly back to him in the Genoa box but it's gone out for a Frey goal-kick.
The Ferraris stadium is quite packed and the fans are in full voice. We have kickoff! Inter are in their white away kits whereas Genoa are playing in their usual red and blue jerseys. The game begins with sloppy play from both sides, losing the ball quickly.
Mere minutes away from kick-off now. Can Inter continue their revival and leapfrog the hosts in the table?
Recent history between the two sides strongly favors the visitors. Four of the last five face-offs have resulted in an Inter victory, including a 1-0 win for the side in the same fixture last year. The other result was a draw back in March of 2010. In fact, Inter have not been defeated by Genoa in Serie A since the 1994-95 season!
Alberto Malesani meanwhile names a relatively unchanged side from last matchday, utilizing Ze Eduardo as the lone striker with the young Alexander Merkel operating behind him. (4-4-1-1): Frey; Dainelli, Granqvist, Kaladze, Moretti; Mesto, Rossi, Veloso, Constant, Markel; Ze Eduardo Subs: Lupatelli, Pratto, Jankovic, Seymour, Jorquera, Marchiori, Caracciolo
Claudio Ranieri's men have lost influential fullback Maicon for the match due to injury but have Andrea Poli starting for the first time this season after being sidelined with a long term injury. Javier Zanetti returns after his suspension for the Fiorentina match, and youngster Davide Faraoni keeps his spot in the side. (4-4-2): Julio Cesar; Zanetti, Lucio, Samuel, Nagatomo; Faraoni, Motta, Cambiasso, Poli; Milito, Pazzini. Subs: Castellazzi, Cordoba, Forlan, Alvarez, Obi, Zarate, Muntari
Welcome to Goal.com's match coverage of Genoa-Inter! The home side are currently in seventh place in Serie A, above eleventh placed Inter by a mere point. Both sides should be in decent form as they're both coming off 2-0 wins; Inter triumphant at home over Fiorentina and Genoa similarly victorious away at Siena last weekend.
